This is my first Terri Hendrix album but it wont be my last. Every song is a winner. Shes totally engaging with a voice that draws you in, first rate music, and lyrics that are deep and personal.

She has a dynamic voice, great songs, and a great personality. She is very witty, and her songs showcase her wit well. If you like a great variety of music, youll likely enjoy this album -- her diverse interests shine through brightly. Its a great cd (as are all of her others). I even like her live cds, which is entirely out-of-character for me. Hope to see you at another PA show!

Ive got every Terri Hendix CD, and with each one I think - Wow! This is the best ever! Playful, introspective, thoughtful, funny - with music and lyrics complimenting each other to a T. This is one of my favoite CDs of all time - Cant wait for the next one!

Some Very Good Songs on a Misfire Album at 2005-12-18
Like many folk and indie artists in the last few years, Terri Hendrix has been moved by the muse to craft a social/political album. And like many social/political albums in the last few years, this one has some very good songs, and clunks in between.If youve heard tracks like Breakdown and Monopoly, you know that Terri Hendrix has some sharp, incisive views. She has the ability to cut through the chatter and get right to the heart of whats wrong in our world today. But if you listen to the album cuts that havent been released to radio and podcasts, tracks like Its About Time and Judgement Day, the lyrical content becomes leaden and declarative. She feels the need to spell everything out, like she cant quite trust her audience to follow what shes saying and come to their own conclusions. Its as though she lapses into a professorial mentality, lecturing to students who are hunched over their composition books taking notes.Sonically, this album is sterling. Hendrix doesnt abandon the guitar-driven Texas country sound that has characterized most of her music to date. But she does incorporate a little more of a peppy pop aspect that steers her ringing voice into more Mariah and less Loretta Lynn. Reading over what Ive just written, I realize that could sound like an insult, but I dont mean it that way. Rather, Terri uses the mainstream like a buffet, picking and choosing what serves the very individual hybrid sound shes trying to create.Late in the album, she slackens on the political drive, and a sturdier, more organic lyric crive comes through. I admit to not liking Luka Blooms version I Need Love from a few years ago, but Terri Hendrix makes it her own, and it works well. Quiet Me and Long Ride Home were both written by other artists, but Hendrix makes them her own, adding a welcome dose of personal introspection at the end of the disc.Fans of Terri Hendrix will find plenty to like about this CD. So will fans of indie folk and lo-fi country. Even the weaker political songs have good musical resonance, including some violin and cello, and supporting vocals from Ruthie Foster. This album isnt a future classic, and it isnt even going to be remembered as one of Hendrixs better efforts. But it is going to be heard and remembered, and thats what really matters.

The Fact Is at 2002-08-24
I generally ignore others claims about an album never leaving my CD player, because my tastes and moods change too often for that kind of thing. But The Ring is an exception. Ive spun this thing every day since its release in early June, and figure Ill continue to do so for a long while. As a fan of Hendrixs music, I came to this with no small amount of bias, but the leap in maturity and songwriting on this album still impresses me. Hendrixs style has often been summed up (somewhat lazily) as sunny and effervescent, and theres enough here to keep fans of that stuff happy, but its the darker, more introspective songs that really hit home: Spinning Off, Nightwolves, I Found the Lions -- these arent happy-go-lucky folk-pop songs. Even the bouncier tunes -- the scat-happy From Another Planet and catchy Consider Me -- are far more spice than sugar, if you can wipe the smile off your face long enough to pay attention to the lyrics. Add the moving and eloquent title track--a testament to the endurance of love-- along with Hendrixs stubborn, determined mission statement on The Fact Is, and youve got one of the smartest and most enjoyable singer-songwriter albums of the year--or any year, for that matter.

great CD at 2002-06-04
I bought this CD a couple of weeks ago @ her show on the riverfront in Fort Smith, Arkansas (just to explain how I got hold of it before the official release date).From what I gather, I think Terri is holding off a bit on the release because Fathers day is so close--the title track is a tribute to her father. This is, in general, a strong album--a more polished product than her earlier albums (which are also excellent), in short, quite highly recommended for anybody who loves the Austin sound. Lloyd Maines provides excellent support, as always.

Clear and Beautiful at 2003-10-14
As far as I know, this is the first album to include a song mourning the passing of cartoonist Charles Schultz, and it puts this track right at the front, before the love songs and autobiographical material. I have a hard time envisioning another artist who would have had the chutzpah to start a disc off by remembering a bald-headed kid who kept falling for that stupid football trick. And thats what makes Terri Hendrix special.Someone said Terri Hendrix could be the fourth Dixie Chick if she worked on her image. Thats a slander, because Terri Hendrix is something the Dixie Chicks could never be: good. Her music is artfully constructed, her lyrics are poetic, her themes are meaningful, and as you listen to this album you realize shes an artist, not a radio-friendly commodity.The lyrical sophistication of these songs suggests the heyday of Dylan and Guthrie, but the content and voice are particularly original. I cant imagine either of those luminaries writing a song about insomnia (Night Wolves) or remembering positively Mom and Dad (The Ring). Even the voice in the music is distinct. Though there are strong folk-country roots, there are also hints of Celtic, jazz, rock, and other eclectic styles.If I had been producing this album, I would have passed over the final track, Prayer for My Friends, or moved it elsewhere in the album. It feels like a post-script, while the real album ended with the final track. Other than that, I have a hard time finding anything even remotely wrong with this album; its that sterling.Like most original voices, her material wont sit well with everybody, and thats okay. What matters is less whether everybody likes it than that people who like it like it very strongly. This album will most definitely hit people where they live, and stick with them for a long time to come.

A pleasant surprise at 2002-10-03
Picked this up on the recommendation of a friend, and Im loving it! She reminds me somewhat of Dar Williams (and maybe a little Rikki Lee Jones), but mostly shes in a class by herself. Great voice, phrasing, playing and writing. I love pretty much every track, but Nightwolves is the one I keep going back to -- its got a nice, spooky groove that really stands out. And Long Time Coming, I think one of maybe two tunes she didnt write, is gorgeous. Definitely worth checking out.

Dogs, Goats, and Accordians at 2001-09-16
I saw Terri and the guys at the Cactus Cafe in Austin, about six weeks after this album was recorded. She and Lloyd Maines chatted continuously with the audience, about her pets, friends, and family, and most of the songs reflected these topics. Lloyd and his wife gave Terri an accordian for her birthday, and she bravely played Jamblaya to the encouragement (and good-natured abuse) of the crowd. It felt more like a backyard picnic than a concert, with the whole crowd joining in on many of the songs, and a chorus of barks and howls to request You Mangled My Dog.If the above sounds like your idea of a good time, buy this album. Otherwise, you might as well pass on everything she does, because its all pretty much like this - very personal, down-home, good-natured, and participative fun. No one will ever mistake Terri Hendrix for Madonna.

Unsatisfying Follow-Up to Places in Between at 2001-11-24
As a Terri Hendrix admirer, Im not sure why she chose to release this CD on the heels of her best work to date Places in Between. It is produced by long-time Hendrix cohort and Tejas uber-producer Lloyd Maines, but I guess he just didnt have much to work with. The whole thing has a slapped-together homemade feel that some might find charming. I found it a disappointing follow-up. If youre not familiar with the work of this talented Texas songwriter/musician, pick up her earlier Terri Hendrix Live, or better yet, go buy Places.

Disappointing live effort at 2002-01-13
Terri played in California this summer, and I saw her for the first time. I bought this CD at her concert, and I was disappointed that the album didnt capture the feeling I got at the show. That is to be expected, but this CD seems particularly unrepresentative of a Hendrix live performance. I bought another live album of hers and it was much better, still not the same experience, but closer than this.

Texas Reviews Itself at 2002-01-04
After reading one of the reviews for Live in San Marcos, I decided to make the following comments. I have followed Terri Hendrixs career for the past 7 years. The depth of her lyrics and the growth of her music is evident in each of her albums. Those of you not from Texas may not be able to appreciate what recording a live album at Cheatham Street Warehouse means. First, it is a corregated tin, long narrow warehouse set approximately 10 feet off of the M-K-T railroad on one side (with constant train traffic) and bounded on the other three sides by thoroughfares in San Marcos. Cheatham Street has offered Texas a venue to listen intimately to such artists as Asleep at the Wheel, BB King, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, George Straight. This is Terris hometown now and the recording was done for the fun and entertainment of fans who wanted a live party album. I take particular exception with the other reviewers comments that this is the same music you will find on any of her CDs. Each CD is as unique and diversified as any artist I am familiar with. Terris music engulfs folk, pop, odes, Spanish, Celtic, New Orleans skat and jazz and country. If you havent taken the time to investigate her music yourself, please do so and dont take the written word of one reviewer who obviously has little knowledge of Terris body of work. Thank you.

Like Americana Music? Give This A Try. at 2002-06-25
I love this CD, and not just because I was at one of the recording sessions in San Marcos (sorry, Im one of the over-enthusiastic fans screaming at inappropriate moments through some of the tracks.) For new listeners, this CD offers a good introduction to Terris quick wit, poignant phrasing, and occasional scat riffs - want a challenge? try singing along with All Woman - and longtime followers will enjoy this CDs transition into a fuller band sound, especially on the rollicking Get Up. Other high points include the reworkings of old favorites Flowers and Hole in my Pocket - great songs that have improved with Terris growing vocal confidence over the years.My biggest issue with Terris CDs? Keeping my collection intact is getting expensive - I keep loaning her CDs to friends and never getting them back.

best pick on my wish list at 2001-02-24
I finally bought this CD for myself a year after I put it on my wish list (gotta keep track of all those desires, you know), and although I couldnt initially remember why I wanted to get this music, once I got it, I congratulated myself a million times over. What I should be doing, however, is writing fan mail to Terri Hendrix. Wow! Shes a dynamo. Her lyrics are smart, funny, thoughtful, even danceable in places. Good Times Van and My Own Place are two of my current favorites, and in fact I believe it was My Own Place that I heard on folk radio up in Maine with the mention that it had won album of the year in some category that led me to hunt it down and eventually purchase it. Id love to see Terri Hendrix live--her songs give some of the flavor of the energy she must have with an audience. But as second best buy this CD...out of all of the music Ive purchased this year, this one is one of the ones Im the most pleased about.

My Place...Your Place...Places In Between at 2000-06-22
I first saw Terri Hendrix in 1994 at a small Italian restaurant in San Antonio, Texas. She sat on a stool too small (to borrow lyrics from her first release, Two Dollar Shoes), flashed her million-watt smile, and wowed me with her angelic voice. The fact that she picked a mean guitar was icing on the cake. I was hooked and have eagerly followed her career ever since. Ive seen her in every sort of venue and in every sort of mood. She is one of a kind.After her third release Terri Hendrix Live, I greatly anticipated a studio release. She has not disappointed me. Places In Between is a superb album and showcases Terris strengths. From the semi-autobiographical title track to the rollicking My Own Place; from the bluesy Goodtime Van to the effervescent Invisible Girl, Terri manages to bring a smile to my face on almost every song. As with her previous studio releases, she has also re-recorded tracks from her first album (Eagles and Moon On The Water).Her band is the same as the Live release and is even tighter on Places.Terris talent continues to shine and with this release, I am assured that she will reach even more people with her superior songwriting abilities and musicianship.This CD is one of very few that is permanently in my CD changer.Try it....you wont be disappointed.

A more mature Terri--but still a blast at 2001-05-18
Hendrix is a gem. Shes a fine writer backed by a first-rate band, and on this album shes more reflective, as the albums cover indicates. Its a more personal glimpse, more private. But thats not to say shes still not lots of fun too. A couple of these tunes really rock (the title tune, for example), and cuts like Invisible Girl and My Own Place are terrific upbeat numbers, and they showcase Hendrixs improved instrumental abilities (shes working hard to be a better player, obviously). As with her previous releases, you get to experience a variety of styles here, from folk to rock to bluegrass--and its all done well. Eagles, a song she recorded on her first CD, Two Dollar Shoes, is terrific here. All three of her previous CDs are well worth owning: theres not a disappointing moment anywhere.

Excellent debut from fine young country singer at 2003-08-10
This album begins with the aching ballad Blue roses, typical of the album as a whole, and maintains a high standard throughout. Some people expected Glenda to become a huge country star but it never happened. Its not difficult to see why - Glendas music is too traditional to interest the major Nashville labels. You can clearly hear a steel guitar - it wouldnt be allowed by a Nashville major these days, would it?If the major labels didnt switch off after Blues roses, they surely would after the second song, Thank god for cowboys, in which even Bob Wills gets a mention. I love Bob Wills music, so its good to know that there are still young people who appreciate it.More ballads follow, all of them superbly sung by Glenda with her lovely voice. There are no up-tempo songs on this album, but there is enough variation in the different songs to keep it interesting.I love country music in all its forms - contemporary as well as traditional - as long as the quality is high. I just wish the major labels would too. Traditional country is getting harder to find, but plenty of it is still being recorded - you just have to know where to look. Glenda has recorded one other album (I will, which Ive already reviewed) but it seems that there will be no more. If you love traditional country, buy them both if you can find them.

Terri Hendrix is the real deal...an enormous stage presence, and a well produced live CD that shows her diversity in songwriting and performing. Sister Song may be her best effort ever and will definitely make you blubber. Gravity and The Know How really rock. She is destined for the big time and when that happens, youll be glad you caught her on the way up when you could still see her live with a little elbow room.

Terri and her band show off their musical chops on this live album. I had the good fortune of being on the front row at Cibolo Creek Country Club when it was recorded. It sounds as good right now as it did that night. Terri sings her own solid originals as well as songs from her favorite Texas songwriters. Her voice will reach in and grab your heart. This album is fun, funny, touching, raucous and much more. Dont pass this one up!

This album is extremely well done. She has so many styles that it is impossible to put her in one genre. Every song she does comes from her heart and you can really hear her emotions while she sings. There are too many songs on this CD for me to name that are wonderful, but to pick three, they would be have to be Wallet; Love Like This; and Hole In My Pocket. You need to experience this singer/songwriter!!

Terri sings from her heart. Lyrically, Terris songs are wise, insightful, universally appealing. Musically, you cant pin her down to one or two genres..shes has strong skills in at least 8 styles..blues, folk, country, jazz, tejano, texas swing, rock and pop. Youll never tire of hearing this album, there is just too much depth to it. Lloyd Maines is the most revered and sought-after steel guitarist and producer in Texas. None of this is hype. Its the real deal.

If you like good music - I mean really good music, with excellent vocals, flawless playing, and incredibly intuitive songwriting, buy this cd! You will not be disappointed. I bought it based on the reviews alone and they were all right. Dont even listen to the demos. Just order it and let yourself discover this fine cd! Aside from Wind me up (the only song that feels out of place and is a little long), the songs grow on you - they are layered, they move, evolve and swirl - you will find yourself singing them subconciously. Dont buy some famous persons cd that youve heard on the radio, or some other cd that you already have a tape or LP of and want to replace. Take a chance on Terri and enjoy it. I plan to get everything else she has done and will do - I am now a permanent fan! Thanks Terri, wherever you are!! Come play LA soon!!!!

I used to see Terri live when I lived in Texas and she was gigging all around San Marcos, New Braunfels, and still quite frequently at Cibolo Creek (outside of San Antonio). I was an instant fan and continue to be, rabidly! (: As noted in the above reviews, she encompasses a wide range of styles. But the key is that all of her songs have these incredible I am soooooo in touch! lyrics, that you will be singing along! You wont be able to stop yourself! This album is exceptional and will surely take Terri to where she deserves to be: the top. Buy this one and if you dont find yourself wind, wind, wind me-upping, then you aint right! (Ive yet to come across a single person who didnt love her instantly, male or female.) Additionally, if you ever get the chance to see this gal live, JUST DO IT!
