Ruthie Foster Album Review:
The Best!! at 2005-06-15
Ruthie Foster is THE BEST pure singer I have ever heard. When she sings Walk On and/or Oh Susannah - chills...I absolutely LOVE HER - not only her singing but her guitar playing also. Check out/download her video at Kerrville from the internet and see her perform. A genius who can sing anything: blues, folk, whatever. I LOVE her - she is my favorite singer. Both her Stages and Runaway Soul albums- whew!!Wish she would perform on national TV...

Stages is Awesome at 2004-08-08
This is simply the best live album I have heard! Having seen Ruthie Foster live at the Canmore Folk Fest - Stages stays true to her performance and gives the listener insight in to the fabulous range and style of Ruthie Foster - highly recommended.

Powerful, Transcendently Beautiful! at 2004-11-10
A couple of weeks ago on a stiflingly sultry afternoon at the Texas Book Festival I heard in the distance this incredible voice singing the old Curtis Mayfield song, People Get Ready. I moved quickly toward it and caught the last two minutes of Ruthie Fosters one hour set at the Entertainment Tent. In those two minutes, the gritty spirituality of her bluesy gospel rendition of that classic gave me the chills, and, I confess, watery eyes. She shook me. I told my wife that she was the greatest singer I had ever heard, and Im not sure that I would qualify that even now. I ordered two of her CDs as soon as I could get to the internet and Amazon.com. The studio produced Runaway Soul is truly great, and I highly recommend it, but Stages is as close to perfection as any human has a right to expect. I agree with the other reviewer. Its the best live CD I own, with the possible exception of James Brown at the Apollo! Her rendition of Oh, Susana, is revelatory. Foster discovers beneath the hokey joy of the tradition tune a transcendently beautiful lament. It is a shockingly insightful performance. Haunting. I could go on and on about other great numbers on the CD, but wont. Just buy it and enjoy it.

Kerrville Folk Festiville at 2005-04-15
Saw Ruthie at THE folk festival. Phenominal. The CD does a nice job of capturing her voice. But youll get this CD and then go see her and say, Wow, I didnt hear that before. Too much depth for digital. But then when you pop that CD back in your player, and the little hairs on the back of your neck will remind you. She has a God-given voice and presence.

Runaway Soul is only the start for her... at 2004-11-09
I saw her at a po-dunk town in Rockne, Texas - for a fund raiser- she moved me she is awesome - speaks to the soul in all songs - addresses all the emotions which is where folk music is at - emotional, moving, jazzy, dancing music, blues tempo - she HAS IT ALL! She addresses it all! I have all her Cds - incorporates harmonica, guitar, organ, but nothing outdoes her VOICE! Incredible! She could sing Happy birthday and it would be awesome!

The woman with the voice at 2005-12-17
I saw Ruthie at the Great Waters Folk festival in Wolfboro NH. She was amazing! After her performance one night I went to buy some CDs. Ruthies were flying off the table. Despite stacks of them, they were gone in minutes. While looking at others to buy I kept hearing people coming up to the table making the same request, I want the woman with the voice. Even though there were many much more famous singers there that night, eveyone knew exactly who these customers were looking for. Sorry, were sold out and waiting for Fed Ex to bring more. The woman behind the counter told me they sold 1000 of her cds in one day!If you grew up in a small country town, or ever wished you did, Home will warm and break you heart at the same time.Do I love every song on this album? No. Doesnt matter. I love Ruthie. She is the real thing. As great as her gift sounds on a recording, it inevitably pales in comparison to her live performances where she shakes the rafters with the clearest, most perfectly on cue singing you ever heard. And when she finishes, after sending chills up and down your spine and leaving you weak from astonishment, she bursts into laughter. Ruthie is pure Joy.

Ruthie Foster shares her soul at 2005-10-25
Ive seen her live, Ive shared a cup of coffee with her, Ive gained inspiration from her because she is lays it out all the time. Runaway Soul captures Fosters incredible soul and voice. We are lucky she is willing and able to share her gift.

New to me-OUTSTANDING MUSICIAN!!! at 2005-07-31
Saw her on TV last nite by accident, not one for blues normally, but she was OUTSTANDING!!!! Beautiful Strong voice, master at her craft in vocal and guitar, background musicians were perfect accompaniment, not drowning her out (as I find in So Many CDs nowadays-I want to hear the ARTIST! ). I am DEFINITELY Buying this CD and most likely many others as I find them.. LOVE , LOVE LOVE HER!!!!!!!!!! A TRUE TREASURE OF A FIND!!! and Im particular! Ive heard many many songs now of hers and loved EVERY ONE which is also unusual for most artists I like. You wont be sorry if you buy this!

Underrated Soul Queen at 2003-02-22
I played harmonica on a few performances with Ruthie in Charleston, SC in the summer of 1999. To see the audience reaction to her was outstanding, so I bought some of her stuff (inlcuding this) while she was in town. The autobiographical Lost in the City is incredible. I long to play with her again because she was as great as a person as she is a telent. It is a shame that singers like Ruthie are known only to the club crowd while less talented people make the megabucks. But buy Full Circle for some well-sung anthems to personal empowerment. Trurst me, it beats putting down the bucks for motivational speakers.

Mixing Arthea and Joan Armatrading gives you Ruthie Foster at 2002-12-31
I first read about Ruthie in the Austin Chronicle, and then simply had to see her at ACL Music Fest. I was not disappointed. In looking back at all the great performances that day, Sunday, Ruthie topped them all. Her voice is comparable to Arthea, but I see a lot of Joan Armatrading in her music. Both women are extremely soulful, and leave you with the impression that you are in the company of undefined greatness. One my favorite Ruthie Foster songs is on her Crossover, the one about the Aggie bonfire. Everytime I play it have to sing and hold my glass up to those Aggies and all the friends that have touched my life.

To compare her to Tracy Chapman is an insult... to Ruthie at 2002-06-15

Amazing voice and guitar playing at 2000-01-07
Theres not enough words of praise to give to Ruthie on Full Circle. She has one of the strongest voices Ive ever heard, and if you get the chance to see her in person youll be doubly amazed by her guitar playing as well. Ruthies music cant be categorized - its a little of everything. Every song on this CD is a special treat for the ears. Her voice carries depth and emotion which leaves you either crying, laughing or both. Let me put is this way... If you were stranded on a desert island and had to choose one CD to take with you this would be the one I would recommend.
