Wicked Twisted Road

Reckless Kelly Album Review:
Irish meets Texas at 2006-05-09
Willie Brauns vocal is rich and smooth, much like a certain rem singer. The guitars, fiddle and much of a vocal has a strong Gaelic flavor. Add to that the complex arrangements, the Texas independent spirit in concert with the beauty of Willies singing and you will buy all RKs music as I have. Wicked Twisted Road is a great place to start.

Great Band, Great CD. at 2005-09-06
Doesnt get much better than this folks. If youre into americana, roots-rock, or alt-country, or if simply like good music, I just cant imagine you not liking this. Highlights for me are the title track, Dogtown, and Babys Got a Whole Lot More, but theres not a bad song on here. Cant beat the awesome packaging, either- they even included a board game (see website for drinking rules). Dont pass this one up. Check out their incredible previous album, too, and also their younger brothers band called Micky and the Motorcars.

I cant take this disc out of my player! its one of the best in a long time and it proves that Gram Parsons still influences todays country music! well, this album has just about everything you could want, intelligent lyrics, expert musicianship and songs that run the gammit, Irish to an all out rocker!, not a weak song on the disc! its a new album and I cant wait for a new one! hurry please!

This is what country bands SHOULD sound like at 2005-04-21
If country radio was true to itself and its listeners, and not caught up in imaging, Reckless Kelly would be one of the most played bands. Ive been a mediocre fan of theirs for several years, but after hearing a few tracks from this CD on XM Radio, I became a true believer. WICKED TWIST ROAD is not too polished, but also not too raw. The album flows wonderfully, from sad ballad, to honky-tonk, to country-irish (is there such a thing?), to good country-pop, and finally, memorable western story songs.I rarely give CDs 5 stars, but this is a must-have for any alt-country fan. This is what country is all about.

This album all together is a great album, no bad tracks. My review of each song.Wicked Twisted Road - 8/10 Great title track song, unlike others, but is one of the weaker songs on the albumDogtown - 8/10 Another one of the better songs on the albumSeven Nights In Eire - 9/10 One of the best tracks on the album, it has a great Irishish sound to itA Lot To Ask - 9/10 Great song about the trouble with taking someone backMotel Cowboy Show - 9/10 Just a real fun songThese Tears 9/10 Well put together lyrics and melodySixgun - 10/10 Greatest song on the cd, the story of a bank robbery, betrayel, and love. Also the longest track on the cd.Nobody Haunts Me Like You 10/10 Very haunting song, just like the title insinuates. Comes in a very close second to SixgunWretched Again - 7/10 While it is a good song, it just doesnt have the memorability like the othersBroken Heart 8/10 Good song, but its still one of the weaker tracks compared to Sixgun and These TearsStick Around 9/10 Great lyrics and a very catchy tuneBabys Got A Whole Lot More 8/10 This song seems more filler than anything, its a good song, but they could have done betterWicked Twisted Road (Instrumental) 9/10 Its refreshing to see instrumentals coming back with the likes of Brad Paisley and Reckless Kelly
Millican
Under the Table and Above the Sun

Reckless Kelly Album Review:
They just keep getting better at 2004-07-12
I began listening to Reckless Kelly in 1998. I thought their first album Millican was excellent and had trouble taking it out of my CD player. Aside from the Mermaid Avenue discs, I thought it was one of the better alt-country CDs of the late 1990s. After numerous times listening to their sophomore effort The Day I begrudgingly admitted to myself that I enjoyed it even more. Under the Table raised the bar even more. Although they have always seemed talented beyond their years, the level of musicianship and songwriting took a noticable leap with this disc. They seem to have matured (no signs of anything like Crazy Eddies Last Hurrah and Time Bomb, great songs though they are) and yet they still seem to not be taking themselves too seriously. They are the true embodiment of alt-country, good twangy guitars and fiddles with undercurrents of roots, blues and rock. If you liked Uncle Tupelo or any of the various offshoots or have an appreciation of true country/roots rock you will really enjoy this album. And if you get a chance to see them live, do not pass it up under any circumstances. Aside from an excess of cover songs in the last half of the set it is one of the better live shows out there.

This cd gets better everytime I listen to it. The band puts on a great live show to match their cds. Reckless Kelly gets the job done.

Reckless Kelly Album Review:
Fresh modern country rock at 2003-08-29
If youre a fan of Steve Earle you shouldnt overlook this album. Reckless Kelly have adopted the Earle style and the singer even sounds very much like the old country rebel. In the booklet, Robert Earl Keen writes an introduction in which he really praise Reckless Kelly and Im bound to agree. The album starts with two very catchy and melodic alternative country tunes with a fair amount of rock. The rest of the material is a mixture of faster and slower songs with hooks and melody in common. The country music style is always present but it doesnt sound as slick as modern acts like Shania Twain or as old as the Nashville tradition. I believe Reckless Kelly is the perfect bridge between the old and the new sound. If you like Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Robert Earl Keen among others, I can almost guarantee that youll also find this album enjoyable. Dedicated fans of Jayhawks, Scott Miller, Whiskeytown and Ryan Adams might also like this attractive effort from Reckless Kelly.

Should have called it Greatest Hits. at 2005-09-06
Wow. Ive been an RK fan for a while now, but I actually picked up their most recent album Wicked Twisted Road before this one. I liked it so well that I had to check this one out. The only problem is trying to decide which one to listen to- theyre both that good. If youre into this kind of music at all (americana, alt-country, roots-rock) youll no doubt soon be calling this your favorite band. Even if youre not into those genres, you owe it to yourself to check this one out. Every songs a winner, but if I had to choose favorites Id go with Vancouver and Desolation Angels. Pick this one up.

Hits The Sweet Spot at 2004-09-29
This is one of the best albums of the new millenium. Some songs are simple and straightforward like You Dont Want Me Around, Nobodys Girl and May Peace Find You Tonight and others tell stories of life on the road like Desolation Angels and my favorite Vancouver. The songwriting is top shelf. The music is mostly about the blending of guitars. They use a little of everything; acoustic, electric, mandolins, lap steel, etc. It reminds me a little of Los Lobos at their best when they use like 5 or 6 guitars on every song. The guitars never get in the way of the vocals however. This is a nice job of production by Ray Kennedy, one of the best in the biz.It may be a little too country for some alt-country fans and not mainstream country enough for that crowd but for most folks, I think this should hit the sweet spot. A great record!

sadly, this is some pretty derivative stuff. granted, its better than most of what comes out of Nashville, to be sure, but thats not exactly saying much these days. this band hit its peak with the Millican debut album, and the stuff since seems to have gotten weaker. They seem to have lost a lot of their original sound with the departure of their original guitarist, (although jon dee graham was a capable session guitarist on this one).the recording itself is especially murky, enough so to make this a pretty annoying listen. to say its not a warm disc is a bit of an understatement.in short -- save your money, and instead of buying this one, grab millican, or grab some uncle tupelo/son volt/jay farrar stuff (which seems to have inspired these guys, at least early on).

Nows the day to buy this! at 2002-09-04
I bought this cd on the strength of an Amazon advert on the site something about country music that doesnt [stink] or Texan songwriters. Anyway this is the best CD I have bought in a long time. It rocks pretty much from start to finish with a country Steve Earl type edge to it. It is also a bit southern rockish like Lynnrd Sknnrrd/ Outlaws which I also like. That said these guys are their own men, write their own stuff, are in their twenties and the sound is all their own no matter how you compare their influences. There is no weak track here and the best compliment I can pay is that I have ordered everything else they have done. Hopefully it will not be that long before the next CD appears.

Reckless Kelly Rocks!!! at 2003-08-24
These guys are awesome! As personal friends of mine, they have my vote, but even if I didnt know them, Id still love them. They are a nice group of guys who really know what they are doing musically, and definitely care about their fans. I cant tell you how many times Ive seen them play, how many of their shows Ive been to, but it never gets old. I get just as excited to go see them play as any other time. In answer to reviewer trey from Texas, YES these guys are from Oregon, my own town in fact. That is how I got to know them so well, and by supporting them by attending their concerts. Even their original guitar player graduated from the high school I went to. No offense, but, know the band and their background facts before talking about things regarding them that you obviously know nothing about.
