Kim Wilson Album Review:
Excellent Album from a blues master at 2003-09-21
This is an excellent collection of varied blues/jump styles from Mr. Wilson. I suppose if you want strictly blues you might be disappointed, but I think the variety makes it much more interesting. Thats Life was supposed to be his best effort, but I think this is far superior. Now Id like to see him live.

Captures Kim Wilson Live at 2004-04-19
Lookin for Trouble represents the spirit and energy of a live Kim Wilson show. While Wilson may not have the level of vocal chops that he displays in his harp playing, he more than holds his own as a singer and interpreter of the blues. Having just seen a Wilson show at a local Boston area club, I enthusiastically recommend not only his excellent discs, of which Lookin for Trouble is one, but also encourage listeners to see him live. He and his band have such commitment, technique, and passion that one is swept up in the joy of a uniquely American art form.

Lookin For Trouble? Youve Come to the Right Place!! at 2003-10-17
Kim Wilson, leader of the Fabulous Thunderbirds and all-around harmonica player extraordinaire, gives us a first-rate goody bag of music in his 2003 effort, Lookin For Trouble. All of the traditional blues numbers really shine, in particular Hand to Mouth, a six-minute, mid-tempo workout strongly reminiscent of Howlin Wolfs Spoonful. Great singing! Also, there are not one but two different renditions of the title track, a full-throttle rocker to open the set and a T-Birdesque shuffle in the middle; the band really cooks on both numbers! Another band standout is Jrs Jump, featuring great guitar by Troy Gonyea and a fine Hammond B3 organ solo by Mark Stevens. Kims harp work is at its soulful best on the blues standard Money, Marbles, and Chalk. Its wonderful, even if the harp is mixed up a little too far. Most listeners will indeed love this album, but blues purists may be put off by the fact that some numbers are not traditional blues but instead are performed in West Coast House Party style (a name taken from a solo album by former T-Birds bandmate Kid Ramos), a mixture of jump blues, New Orleans shuffle, and 40s pop. These numbers, including Hurt on Me, Love My Baby, and especially Hook, Line and Sinker are fine but may be a little too sugary-sweet for some tastes. Also, the sound quality is a little raw. Still, there are many juicy numbers on this lengthy CD to enjoy, so you might indeed want to purchase it. Because, if youre lookin for trouble, youve come to the right place!

Showing Us His Real Side. at 2003-09-27
I feel that what some of the more negative reviewers are missing in their comments is the fact that this is a raw CD. It was cut on the fly. Kim seemed to put more effort in the feel and the soul of this record instead of focusing on the nerdy aspects of sound and perfecting his vocals. Its raw and real, its down and dirty and more that, it is honest and sincere . He draws from the spirits of Howlin Wolf, Papa George Lightfoot, Little Walter andSnooky Pryor, non of whom were vocal virtuosos to the main steam public, however, they are geniuses to me! Kim lets us view him from the inside out. He forgets about pleasing the main stream joe public and focuses on pleasing himself, it comes through loud -n- clear and I love it. Lazy Lester never cared if you didnt like his singin he just knew he loved singin. Kim has shown us here that the pupil has become the teacher. I say Teach on! I dont care what it says in any past liner notes. This ablum shows us and tells us what hes really believing...and I m buyin it!

Not Quite Up To Standard! at 2003-09-22
Kim Wilson is among the finest harp players of all times and his playing on this disc is exceptional. However, that playing is sometimes overshadowed by Wilsons rather limited abilities as a vocalist. Wilsons limited vocal range is a definite draw back to this CD and one that narrows considerably the creative envelope in which his band plays. Much of the disc seems retro, flat and repetitive. If you have to have this, buy it used and then look for other Wilson releases like This Joint Is Smokin.

Just like the picture on the cover, this CD smokes. This has to be Kims best work. If only he and Jimmy V could put one out together.

Consistently only the best at 2002-04-15
Kim Wilson is one of the few musicians I know of who consistently delivers excellence. Smokin Joint is no exception. The only bad thing about any of his CDs is when they come to an end. I cant wait until the next CD is released! Support a national treasure and fundamentally pure musician - buy all of his CDs, along with the entire catalog of the Fabulous Thunderbirds!

Kim Wilson Smokes! at 2002-03-24
I am not a big blues fan, but I really like this CD. I heard Kim Wilson on a radio program, and I thought he was part of The Fabulous Thunderbirds. However, his sound is much more of a basic blues, and it is a toe tapper from start to finish. The recordings are live, but you can really hear the music and lyrics. If you like going to bars that play the blues, you will like this CD.

A Solid Effort, But Not His Best at 2002-03-31
Kim Wilsons Smoking Joint is avarage of his ability. I like the record and I believe it to be a solid effort, but for some reason the record seems bland and uninspired. I have seen the T-Birds live a few years back, and have heard kim Wilson on the Jimmy Rogers album Ludella (This album is what I recommend for some serious Kim Wilson harp playing), but this album lacks that magic which we know of Kim Wilson. This is a good record though, and shouldnt be dismissed. Its a good effort overall, but not Kims best.

A True Bluesman! at 2001-07-17
Kim Wilson stays very busy on the road theses days, alternating tours as frontman for The Fabulous Thunderbirds and occasionally hitting the clubs with his Blues Review. If youve been to any of his solo shows, then you know what to expect on this fine album - many well-crafted covers of older blues material, sprinkled with a few Wilson originals. Most of the tunes here dont begin to approach the raucousness of many crowd pleasing T-bird favorites, but they are just as satisfying. Eschewing the latest digital technology, this CD is recorded live and retro-style, in Hi-Fi mono, to give you that latenight, juke joint feel. Nearly every tune is a stand-out, in its own way, w/ West Helena Woman, Date Bait and Your Funeral and My Trial leading the way. Definitely a Buy for Blues fans.

great cd for kims vocals and awesome harp at 1998-10-03
kim has outdone himself on this one. listened to it on the way home the other night and was floored, not only by the tune selection but by the recording method of hifi mono. sounds great and even recommend it to the savvy a##holes at living blues, who said this cd wasnt worth anything.

This IS Kim Wilson at 2000-03-21
I bought this CD at his show in Maynard, MA on 3/18/2000 at the Sitn Bull Pub. I saw the man perform that night...what a show! I listened to this CD the next morning and it was as good as the show...maybe that is why it is titled My Blues. His Live-to-tape recording method does this band justice! There is no mixing magic here, what they played is what you bought! You hear the band, in their element. I can recommend this CD to anyone who truly enjoys Blues without being afraid they might not like it. If I were Merrill-Lynch, Id rate this one a BUY!

THE TEXAS TIGERMAN IS BACK ! at 2000-09-19
This 1994 CD by the frontman of The Fabulous Thinderbirds is his second solo-release, after Tigerman (1993). Kim Wilson ranks among the top of blues harp players of the 1990s, rivalled only by the late William Clarke or by Charlie Musselwhite. Guest musicians on this CD include the likes of Duke Robillard, Ronnie Cuber, Rusty Zinn and Clarence Holliman. Wilson delivers a cooking set of covers like Sonny Boy Williamsons Shes my baby and Junior Parkers Pretty Baby, and also includes 3 self-penned originals, of which Dont bite the hand that feeds you sounds like something the great Little Walter could have written. A high-energy mix of modern blues and R and B, which anyone should enjoy, as he quite simply comes through a whole lot better than he does with The Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Kim Wilson Album Review:
A great, great blues album at 2000-02-21
Ive been in blues bands since 1985, so trust me when I say this is an awesome -- and unusually cheap -- CD. Kim Wilsons blues harp through his Green Bullet microphone sounds better than ever (literally his best playing since his pre-fame Fabulous Thunderbirds days). The song choices (Johnny Guitar Watsons She Moves Me, for instance) are pleasingly atypical and sprinkled with subtle time-signature twists. But the true high point is the tasteful and unique guitar playing of Duke Robillard, who is simply outstanding. Blues guitarists can learn tons from Robillards solos -- even on this fairly obscure CD. Also nice is the presence of former Fab Thunderbirds Preston Hubbard and Fran Christina on a few songs. Junior Watsons guitar playing is decent, too. Highly recommended.
