Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior Kills at 2006-01-20 This CD smokes and is an absolute joy to listen to--a virtual eargasam! Juniors guit-steel playing is a cross between Dick Dale, Stevie Ray Vaughn and a roto-tiller on steroids. The recording is crystal clear and makes it seem as though you are at the Continental Club with the other Junior music addicts.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Yee-Ha! at 2005-12-28 This CD didnt disappoint me - its great music and its a lot of fun to listen to. Ive only had it a few days, but I think this is going to become my favorite Junior CD.The sound quality is stellar too. It was recorded directly to DSD at the Continental Club, and I must say that its the best live recording Ive ever heard. Just what youd expect from the folks at Telarc.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior Brown Live is an alopated, psychotronic, swampadelic experience! at 2006-03-23 The Man of Guit-Steel does it again. I saw him oncein Virginia Beahc, VA at the Naval Base in an outdoorfree show! I would have paid hundreds, though. He andhis band are excellent and he is very funny and enter-taining as well, Get that hippie off stage. No way!
Junior Brown Album Review:
Better to see him live than to listen to this live disc..... at 2006-07-25 I have seen Junior Brown live a few times and I am always amazed at his guitar prowess, however I am very disappointed in this particular release:1-First of all its only 52 min. long. A cd has about approximately 79 minutes of available space, and with Juniors songs being relatively short, there could have been 25 minutes more music on here.2-The set list isnt the best.....there are MANY definitive Junior tracks which dont show up here at all.3-Aside from the last track (Rock and Roll Guitar Medley) the performance here is rather lifeless, the singing sounds tired and strictly by the numbers....no flash, electricity or energy Junior usually provides in his LIVE shows...on this, he tends to simply phone it in.I really love Junior Brown and his music/guitar abilities, but this disc doesnt not reflect his ability as a performer, just that of a guitar picker.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Another Junior chapter..... at 2005-11-21 Everytime I listen to Junior Brown, my teeth go buck! I picked up this release for the collection and have already listened to it several times over the last few days. Right now I swear I would be able to eat corn on the cob through a picket fence. A true must for the Junior Brown listener. Most of all get out and see him when he comes to play in your town. I dont know about the record release business, but why couldnt this have been as long as one of Juniors concerts?

Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior Brown, a great traditionalist, does it again. And again, and again... at 2006-03-23 Jamieson Brown, Jr., better known by his stage name,Junior Brown is a fantastic guitarist, er, ah, makethat Guit-Steelist, who keeps coming out with verygood to great LPs (and one EP, Junior Brown, ***).Nine releases now and not an even close to being bador average one. Pick Up On It!
Junior Brown Album Review:
For those of you longing for staunch traditionalism... at 2005-06-08 Nobody but nobody nowadays does traditional country better than Junior Brown. You cant even call his music contemporary traditionalism (i.e., Alan Jackson, George Strait, etc.). Browns music harks back to the day of Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb (his biggest influence, immortalized in My Baby Dont Dance to Nothin But Ernest Tubb), and Jimmie Rogers. Listen to Too Many Nights in a Roadhouse and try NOT to think of the guys who started this whole thing we call country music. All of it delivered in Browns mellow baritone. They say Chet Atkins was the kind of guitar player who either made you wanna play guitar or quit playing. Brown is that type of guitarist as well. His patented guit-steel instrument is inspired and unmistakable (it came to him in a dream, he once said), and his playing will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Even people with absolutely no interest in instrumentals will be floored by Sugar Foot Rag (unfortunately, the only instrumental on here). And the hillbilly/blues licks of Freeborn Man will make you swoon. And though few of these songs are deep and meaningful (Brown isnt that kind of artist), theres a lot of honesty and wit. My Wife Thinks Youre Dead is absolutely hilarious, delivered in its stoic manner, and Joe the Singing Janitor roots for the underdogs and those behind the scenes (I cant carry a tune in a bucket/But I carry that bucket with pride).Having spent most of his career flying underneath radios radar (despite the fact that Highway Patrol remains a radio staple to this day), Junior Brown isnt about to give in. He continues to make country music as honest and as traditional as electric instruments allow. His voice in unmistakable, his picking is unbelievable, and his style is irrisistable. GREATEST HITS may not be the best anthology of his music you could purchase, but its Junior Brown, so whos complaining?

Junior Brown Album Review:
Rippin 8-string steel at 2004-12-24 On his seventh solo album, Junior Brown augments his signature truck-driving, honky-tonk twang with cool lounge-lizard jazz guitar (You Inspire Me), soulful Albert King-style string bending (Monkey Wrench Blues), and even occasional horns. But the highlight is Browns Guit-Steel -- a custom doubleneck hybrid of Tele and lap steel -- which lets him jump mid-song between 6-string chicken pickin and whining 8-string tone-bar licks. His steel playing is remarkable: Whether comping Western swing chords, plucking cry-in-your-beer country fills, or whipping out stuttering double-stops, Brown nails his lines with righteous intonation and a fat, swooping tone. As always, he delivers his tongue-in-cheek lyrics in a resonant baritone, his Guit-Steel timbres are unfettered with digital processing, and his solos have a live, reckless edge.

Jamieson Brown, Jr. back in action and back to the Country - Yee-Haw! at 2006-03-23 In recent past efforts, Brown on Long Way Home andothers tried his hand at Rock, Jazz, Dixie, and evenBlues. It turned out well, too. But aside from theHendix cover weve all been waiting for, Brown goesback to the corn stalks and gives us what weve beenmissing - REAL COUNTRY! Thanks, brudder! Mahalo andAloha, for now (til next review)!

The Junior Brown Express at 2005-08-01 If youre already a fan of the awe-inspiring Junior Brown and his guit-steel ways, this album will not let you down. There are a lot of good cuts on this and its on auto-pilot from start to finish in my rig! P.S. Go see J.B. play live, itll change your life!
Junior Brown Album Review:
Down Home Corn at 2005-05-10 Ive been a Junior Brown fan since the earlier days. Not only is he a superb guitarist, he is a clever and gifted songwriter whose facility with words sometimes leads him to write some of the most maudlin and corny yet literate country songs around. On Down Home Chrome, Brown shines once again with his guit-steel virtuosity, but succumbs to writing some of the corniest songs Ive heard in a long time. Like bad puns, some of the lyrics can really make a fan cringe.Whats good? I like The Bridge Washed Out, the swinging Hill Country Hot Rod Man, the traditional Lets Go Back, the jazzy You Inspire Me, a competent cover of Hendrix Foxy Lady, and the obligatory bout with the blues, Monkey Wrench Blues. The corniest of the bunch are Little Rivi-Airhead, Jimmy Jones, Two Rons Dont Make A Right, and Are You Just Cuttin Up?.Junior Browns voice fits his style well and he seems best when playing either traditional style country or the blues. However, on Down Home Chrome there is not much of either. But he does have an excellent band so the music alone keeps this CD from falling below three stars.Hard-core Junior Brown fans will like this, but some casual fans may drift away in dismay if he continues along his cornball path. But I look at it this way. Corniness is part of his musical persona, there were hints of it from the beginning and its not going to suddenly disappear. So if the down home corn makes you cringe, try to ignore that and focus on what attracted you to Browns music in the first place. The basic Brown formulas and style are still intact.

Really 3.5 stars, but not a bad effort. But Junior... at 2006-03-23 Pls. get a shave. Rick Nielsen of my other favorite band, Cheap Trick didnt look good with a beard/goatee either! title holds true at 2004-05-30 I love junior brown. however this cd is truely a mixed bag.lets all hope his soon to be released down home chrome will see a return to form.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior still rocks at 2002-09-08 Anyone notice that Juniors picture on the front of Mixed Bag is very similar to Richie Havens picture on the cover of his Mixed Bag album? More than a coincidence? Anybody have any knowledge as to if Junior did this on purpose? I bet he did!His guit-steel guitar combines 50s, Hendrix and pedal steel sounds to make Junior unique and refreshing. I always include Junior when I want to hear great guitar work and great blues.

Junior Brown Album Review:
Long Walk, but not too far from great... at 2006-03-23 The title track, as the opening cut is superbbut there is not as much humour on this disk.Which is fine. Borwn has pushed the envelopeso many times and has not struck out, or offyet. Wat to go Junior. Son, after Semi-CrazyI didnt really want necessarily the same, and didnt get it. Thanks for another ****disk. You are the (Country) Man!
Junior Brown Album Review:
Need a half star please... at 2004-04-16 A good but very average release from Mr. Brown. Not great, but not bad either, and certainly not one of his best. Would have given this one an extra half star for stupid blues which almost manages to pick this CD up to above average material. Almost. Im however not regretting buying this CD by no means.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Eclectic Selections at 2003-05-12 I bought this CD when it first came out following Browns highly successful Semi-Crazy and was hoping for more of the same. Well, I didnt get it. It took me some time to get into the eclectic selections offered on Long Walk Back, but I am finally to the point of appreciating it for what it is rather than what I wanted it to be.Juniors great voice is still here and his inimitable playing style is still here but he seems to stray further from his country roots with each successive album. That is not necessarily disastrous but on this CD there is precious little country at all except for the title cut and the buckle-polishing Just A Little Love. And hard country is still where Browns greatest strength lies.Thats not to say some of the other songs arent good. Browns writing is sometimes clever, sometimes corny and his wordplay is often brilliant. The best Brown compositions in addition to the two already mentioned are The Better Half, Keepin Up With You, Im All Fired Up, and the extended blues workout Stupid Blues. His songs will have you smiling, laughing, and occasionally grimacing. The worst songs are the maudlin Read Em and Weep and the cheesy novelty song Rock-A-Hula Baby. The presence of those two dogs and Browns increasing tendency for playing ten notes where three or four will do shaves a star off of what is otherwise another strong effort by the master of the guit-steel.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior did a fine job! at 1999-12-09 I understand that this CD encompasses more musical styles than previous Junior Brown CDs, but thats the joy of listening to Junior. He is musically diverse, inventive, original, and hugely talented. Nobody does Texas honky-tonk music this well these days. And as for the rest of the songs, nobody even comes close. This is actually my favorite Junior Brown CD, and yes, I have seen him live as well. If you truly are a music lover and can appreciate innovation and different types and styles of music, then you shouldnt have any problem with this CD. Juniors love for the same is apparent.
Junior Brown Album Review:
I dont care much for new country but this is different. at 2002-02-22 When it comes to country music I am far more likely to listen to Hank Williams Sr. or Patsy Cline than any of the current chart toppers whom I wont name here. I stumbled across Junior Brown by accident listening to an eclectic program on NPR, the song was My Wife Thinks Youre Dead. I loved the song, and within a few days owned every Junior Brown album. Its hard to describe a country picker who shows more influence from Jimi Hendrix than Roy Clark. Long Walk Back is my favorite of his albums, although its a tough choice. The title track is a traditional sounding number aided by Juniors clear booming baritone. A voice somewhere between Hoyt Axton and the Big Bopper, a refreshing change of pace from the strangling sound of false tenors. His voice works better on hot numbers than on ballads but he holds his own on the slow songs. Rock-A-Hula Baby is a fun rockabilly number, Lookin For Love has a 50s rock and roll sound. Freedom Machine and Im All Fired Up have that boogie-country sound similar to the classic Highway Patrol. This album also features an instrumental, Peelin Taters which the title says it all, I think. The album ends with Stupid Blues, a nearly 9-minute run which is anything but stupid where Junior runs the whole cycle on the guit-steel and ends with a boogie flurry. I highly recommend this album or Guit With It as Guit Aquanted albums for Junior Brown.

Track # 10 is worth the price of this CD at 2003-08-17 If you like 60s instrumental Surf Music, then purchase this CD just for track #10, the Surf medly. I first heard this rendition on XM satellite radio and immediately went to the display screen to see who it was. I immediately purchased this CD, even though I am not a country/western music fan.Great recording with excellent steel guitar playing!

Junior Brown Album Review:
Guit Outta Here at 2002-08-07 Junior Brown is about as unique to Country as his guit-steel guitar and trademarked rolled up cowboy hat. With his deep, baritone voice and tongue-in-cheek songwriting makes this guitar virtuoso worth checking out. As a guitar player, this guy is amazing, mixing his twangy Telecaster style grooves and solos with some nasty slide playing. You have to see him live just to understand this mans dexterity. This understated guitar greats talent can be heard on the guit-solo in the middle of I Hung It Up. The thunking sound you hear at the end of the song is your jaw hitting the table. He starts the album off with Gotta Get Up Every Morning a humorous look at a partying girl friend that rolls in from clubbing just as hes getting up to go to work. He continues this parody cautious look at women with Venom Wearin Denim. He sings with Red Simpson on the title track, a true truck-driving song with some fancy guitar work. You cant have a Country singer without a ballad, and Brown has a couple. He croons on I Want to Hear It From You, and the nearly depressing Parole Board. Brown just isnt Country though. He likes surf too, as he shows with Surf Medley, the classic compilation of Pipe Line, Walk Dont Run and Secret Agent Man. To put it simply, Brown is amazing. Hes definitely one to look at if you are into Country or are just a guitar loving fool. The man is amazing with his axe. His music is fun and enjoyable as well. The only complaint I have about this album is that it is very short, clocking in just over half an hour.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior Brown is the MAN. at 2004-11-12 Junior Brown is still the only countryish singer I can stand, and this is probably the best album Ive heard from him. Hysterical lyrics, kick-[...]guitar - just an all around fantastic album. Favorites: Hung it Up, Joe the Singing Janitor, and the awesome Surf Medley. Get it now.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Juniors Benchmark Album at 2004-09-20 If you have had heard some of the raves about Juniorfrom reviewers, but have never actually heard him, this isa good Junior Brown tour-de-force. He explores some of theold genres of country music - The Cheatin woman, the TruckDrivin Song, We-Cant-get-Along, etc., and some other songs that are just Junior having fun. The intro guitar solo on I Hung It up is remarkable. Iplace it with my top ten best recorded guitar solos. This guyis in the same league as Clapton, the three Kings (Albert,Freddie, BB), SRV, Albert Collins, Slash, Setzer, etc. {Whenwas the last time you heard a country guy use feedback andwhammy bar??) Ernest Tubb meets Jimi Hendix? (But it works!) This album is just plain fun. Track ten is a surf musicmedley thrown in just to mess you up about the time you thinkyou have him figured out. This CD occupies a permanent spot inmy cars CD cassette. Buy this CD. You wont be sorry!

Junior Brown Album Review:
Jimi Hendrix at the Grand Ole Opry? at 2000-06-10 If youre a big fan of AM country radio, country TV videos and country top-10; bypass Junior Brown and search elsewhere for black-hat, salon-manicured, honky-tonk wanabees. Juniors baritone is as sincere as that of Ernest Tubb (Thats Easy For You To Say). And speaking of commercial country, what ever happened to goofy hillbilly music? Whatever happened to Dont step on my blue suede shoes fun? Try `My Wife Thinks Youre Dead with the line cause youre wanted by the police, and my wife thinks youre dead. Junior plays some sort of morphed electric slide guitar which allows him to pick strings while sliding alone the neck of the steel guitar. The combination is dazzling (My Wife Thinks Youre Dead). `Lovely Hula Hands is a sweet melodic ride: Juniors loving baritone with romantic and oh-so-gentle slide guitar chords. The surprise on Junior High is the instrumental `Sugar Rag. Here, Junior sets the country two-step ablaze with Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page freak-out gusto. The CD contains just 5 cuts - 5 compositions with a stylistic homage to the Grand Ole Opry, all delivered in the spirit of rocknroll.

Truckin Music at 2005-08-20 I am a truck driver and first heard Junior Brown on Sirius satellite radio in late 2004. My God, what truck drivin music!!! I cant wait to get my hands on more of his sounds.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior Brown 12 shades at 2004-11-22 I bought this cd at Amazon.Id seen Junior on Austin City Limits.Ive thoroughly enjoyed this cd,I crank it up on several of the songs when listening in my car.The studio work is good, with good clean sound. On the first track,Junior sounds amazingly like Ernest Tubb, complete with Billy Bird sounding guitar. On Broke Down South of Dallas,he sounds like Dave Dudley. You can in fact hear a lot of influence from the country stars you love in this cd.For a few:Ray Price,Hank Williams,Hank Thompson,Al Dexter,Spade Cooley,Pee Wee King maybe.I can tell Junior grew up listening to the same thing I did(I was listening to stuff from before my time,I aint all that old!)Theres a song where he plays 3 finger banjo on the electric guitar(Free Born Man)Its Hot...However,there are a couple of acoustic sermons on there that are not that great. All in all,its a great album.
Junior Brown Album Review:
You gotta hear this! at 2003-09-12 Junior Brown is like no other singer, he is just himself. An absolutely refreshing mix from Ernest Tubb to traditional Texas shuffle with a bit of Hawaiian and Rockabilly...Sounds confusing, but trust me, you will love this record! Junior is also a master picker on Guitar and Steel, he plays his famous Guit-Steel and sings up a storm. This guy is definitely a highlight in todays monotone recording world.
Junior Brown Album Review:
A True Masterpiece at 2003-09-08 Being a big fan of Junior Brown, I own all five of his current albums, but although I like all of them, its not hard for me to say that this is his best. So many of its songs are so superb. With that said, its important to mention the general style of the album. Not having been exposed to much old-time country until this album, when I first got it (my first Junior album), I wasnt too sure about it. But every time I listened, I began to like it more and more.Basically, its old-time country, but with a twist (which I discovered after purchasing and listening to an Ernest Tubb CD). Ive heard people say its country with the spirit of rock n roll, and I have to agree with that. Really, I see three styles total on the album. Real old-time country (Freeborn Man, They Dont Choose to Live That Way, Too Many Nights In a Roadhouse, A Way to Survive, and Moan All Night Long), older-but-not-as-old country (My Baby Dont Dance To Nothing But Ernest Tubb, Baby Let the Bad Times Be, Broke Down South of Dallas, Whats Left Just Wont Go Right, and Dont Sell the Farm), and Hawaiian influenced country (Hillbilly Hula Gal and Coconut Island). Those are really sub-styles though, as the album is actually very focused compared with some of his other albums. Its old-time country with the spirit of rock n roll, and its that simple. And in clarification of what I meant by Hawaiian influenced ... its not actually Hawaiian, but a Hawaiian steel guitar sound is evident in many parts of the two songs that I said are Hawaiian influenced. Those two songs are also at least tropical in their titles and lyrics. Other than that though, theyre good ol country just like the rest of the album. As I said earlier, many of the songs on this album are really superb. Country was always meant to be serious at times, silly at times, and often a mix of the two, and thats evident on this album. With songs such as My Baby Dont Dance To Nothing But Ernest Tubb and Hillbilly Hula Gal, unless you impose a well its just too silly for me barrier, you wont be able to help but smile at the pure listening fun those songs bring, as they are really just pure fun for all their silliness, and they examplify perfectly what I meant when I said country was meant to be silly at times. With songs such as They Dont Choose to Live That Way and Dont Sell the Farm, if you allow yourself to, you can really feel the emotions that Junior is trying to convey through the music and lyrics, and those songs are exactly what I meant by saying country was meant to be serious at times. With songs in between (which is most of them), you just get a good listening experience, with excellent songs. All of the songs are just good, regardless of whether theyre silly, serious, or in between. All of them are just superb, but youll have to listen to them to know exactly what I mean. This is my favorite Junior album, and I really do feel its a masterpiece. I listen to all twelve tracks, and whenever I make CD-R compilations of Juniors music for my family, friends and aquaintences, I find it difficult to leave off whatever songs from this album that I cant fit. For anyone who likes country music, I highly recommend this album. Even if youve never heard old-time country, or else arent real fond of it, theres a good chance youll like this if you give it a few listens. Start with such classics as My Baby Dont Dance to Nothing But Ernest Tubb and Baby Let the Bad Times Be, and go from there.Happy listening, and if you like this, then be sure to check out Juniors other albums.

Guit with It

Junior Brown Album Review:
Definitely One to See at 2002-01-23 Junior Brown is a guitar enigma. Hes a little bit country, a little bit western, a little bit rock and roll, a little bit blues, a little bit surf.... In a live show, you never are quite sure what hell be throwing your way. One thing is for certain, you will definitely be amazed. Although Guit With It isnt at the same intensity as his live shows, it is still a masterpiece of dazzling finger-work on the fretboard and slide. His hybrid guitar thats half Telecaster and half pedal steel (without the pedals - he does all the string bends with his ring finger behind the slide) is a sight to behold. Its even a greater treat to watch him play it. Guit With It is a playground to show off Browns talents, and he has many. My favorite track on the album is the instrumental, Sugarfoot Rag. A brilliant display of his flat-picking ability and fingers faster than light. He moves seamlessly between the Tele and the steel. He makes it trickier by adding vocals for the remaining songs. His voice is a low rumble thats very fitting to his playing. When Brown sings, you cant help but smile, especially with lyrics like Youre wanted by the police, and my wife thinks youre dead, which guest stars Jimmie Vaughan on guitar. His songs are full of humor and irony like Party Lights and Highway Patrol, and he can even get a little romantic like the duet with his wife So Close Yet So Far Away and The Gal from Oklahoma. Brown is definitely what country should be about. Everything he plays, no matter how far he strays, still has a twinge of country to it. Even if it is Jimi Hendrixs Red House underneath all that Guit-Steel Blues or Foxy Lady (sorry, youll have to catch this one live) Brown is country at heart. If youre a guitar fan, youll have to catch Brown live just to revel in his high-energy performances and amazing guitar work. Hes easily worth twice the cost of admission, and you dont even have to like country to enjoy the show...or album.
Junior Brown Album Review:
Junior Browns first and some say, still best...read on at 2006-03-23 I first became acquainted with Mr. Brown on Austin City Limits, which at that time (in my area of the good ole US of A was still showing acts worth watching (Webb Wilder, et, al). Iwas blown away watching plunk the strings onthat thang he calls a Guit-Steel! Its soCountry, its well, Anti-Country! But just toprove he hasnt strayed too far from the farm,Junior has Jimmy Rogers original cut as the closer. I loved it! Pick Up On It!
Junior Brown Album Review:
Even if you DONT like country music, get it! at 2005-07-29 This (debut?) album is possibly the best country-cross-over album since Gatemouth Browns (no relation, except musically) Black Jack and Makin Music duet album with Roy Clark. Jr. Brown has a pleasant baritone voice, about which hes reasonably modest, and a sense of humor about his material which recalls both Willie Dixons blues writing and mainstream country writing of the 50s and 60s ala George Jones. Check out Youre Wanted by the Po-lice [pronounced like that, two sylables]. and My Wife Thinks Youre Dead.THEN listen to whats going on instrumentally on the rest of the album, BEFORE you tackle the all-instrumental Sugarfoot and Guit-Steel, because, otherwise, you WILL be picking your lower jaw off the floor. Surf? Hawaiaian? Hendrix quotes? Chet Atkins? Texas swing? Sonny Rhodes? Black southern sacred steel guitar? Hes got it ALL in the mix there. The ONLY REAL country album Ive listened to repeatedly, in the last decade... rfgs

pull over... at 2002-03-30 Who is this madman with the big hat and where did he learn to play like that? What an awesome cd!!! If you ever see him on Austin City Limits, you will be amazed.Country the way it was meant to be.
Junior Brown Album Review:
I left country because country left me... at 2004-11-10 Damn if that isnt the TRUTH. Junior Brown is a GOD. A GENIUS. He puts what passes today for country to shame. Lately, his recordings havent measured up to the quality of this or his other, earlier recordings, but so what. This man loves the classics and does very well by them. The fact of the matter is that to truly appreciate Junior you MUST SEE HIM PERFORM LIVE. It is an experience you cannot forget, and once you see him, you MUST see him and hear him OVER AND OVER AGAIN. There are simply no words to describe his blistering guit-steel skills - they have to be seen and felt to be believed. Consider yourself lucky if and when Junior comes to your town. If rocking, roadhouse country is your thing, do WHATEVER it takes to see him!
