Long Lost Album at 2005-04-20
I just finished some extensive research on this album. Apparently, you cant buy it under the name Austin Texas. It was re-released under the name The Progressive Blues Project. Its the same album, but different names. I have the vinyl burned onto CD and couldnt find any information on it on the web anywhere. So if you are reading this in desperation about where Austin Texas fell off the earth- fret no more. By the way- This is an excellent album and I highly recommend it if you are even remotely into dirty rock and blues. His riffs are amazing. When I put in the the cd player it stays for weeks at a time.

False advertising. at 2005-12-07
According to Johnny Winter himself , he never actually appeared on this after hours session at all! This recording has been issued under various diguises and titles under Hendrixss heading. The sound quality is poor and the musicianship is well below par with screaming obscenities being hurled from Jim Morrisons corner. It should carry an advisory label because its more obscene in places than the vilest rap record! Not for the faint hearted.

The Hottest Winter on Record at 2005-12-16
Why John Dawson Winter III isnt available on CD is beyond all reason and rationale! This album is likely his best work of all time. I still have it on LP. My stylist nearly melts each time its played; not to mention my speakers. Perhaps, the next generation of Rock-n-Blues fans will petition label executives to re-issue this on a modern medium. If youre just getting into Johnny Winter or a long time fan, then John Dawson Winter III is the HOTTEST Winter on record.GOOD NEWS BLUES FANS! I have obtained a copy of JDWIII on CD on the Blue Sky label; however, I had to go to Japan to get it. I do not know the particulars why its available in limited release in Japan, but not in the states. Lay Down Your Sorrows and Stranger are some of the best of the Baron of the Blues smooth guitar work and this CD has the vocals to match. I advise buying this CD, regardless of price, whenever and wherever you find it.Peace, The Grifter

Johnny Winter Album Review:
Johnny Winter plays the blues at 2005-06-26
Before Winters early Columbia records brought him fame and fortune, this modest little album came out on Imperial. The title, The Progressive Blues Experiment, sounds a little ominous, but there is absolutely nothing progressive about this record; Johnny Winter, bassist Tommy Shannon, and drummer John Red Turner tear through ten genuine blues tunes without applying so much as a smear of rock commercialism. The trio lay down a furious Rollin And Tumblin and an aggressive take on Mean Town Blues, and if I am to complain a little, Winters take on Rollin And Tumblin in particular is parhaps a little bit too furious, sacrificing groove for high-octane propulsion. But most of what is here is excellent. Im particularly fond of the two acoustic numbers, Broke Down Engine and Bad Luck And Trouble, genuine Delta blues which feature Winters National steel guitar, and also see him playing harp and mandolin. But there is something here for everyone, and Johnny Winters renditions of B.B. Kings slow blues Its My Own Fault, and Howlin Wolfs ominous Forty-Four are among his best blues covers. His playing is excellent and varied all the way through, and the lean arrangements are virtually perfect.A very good early effort, and one of Winters best blues records (right after Nothin But The Blues, Johnny Winter, and the phenomenal White, Hot and Blue).Definitely recommended.

Highly Recommended!!!!!!! at 2006-06-16
Any guitar/blues fan will appreciate this Progressive Blues Experiment remastered for the very first time. Johnny Winters riffs are raw and dirty on this masterpiece. Tommy Shannon (former member of SRV and double trouble) lays down the bass, while Red Turner lays down the beat. From the very opening song Rollin and Tumblin to the very last notes of Forty-Four Johnny Winter shows his pure talent as a blues guitarist. This was the first album that brought Johnny Winter recognition as a guitarist in america. This is a true classic that is HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!

One of the greatest Blues Albums ever made at 2006-02-26
Johnny didnt have to do more than this album to get entry into the R n R Hall of Shame. This is so unpretentious, pure and true as young Johnny plays with such fantastic skill and technique on the various electric Blues forms on this CD.Johnny stays very loyal to the form, adds adds his energy and creativity of his unique talent, yet stays so true to the Blues forms done. That guitar and I especially love Johnnys slide guitar, it is just is an absolute joy to hear. Pure as the driven snow. If someone was learning to play the guitar and wanted to hear some clear, top leval musician, playing several forms of Pure Electric Blues, this album would be absolutely a must to have. A absolute classic album and and inspiration to both listeners and muscians. Go Johnny Go !!Jon

Album Liner Notes at 2006-06-26
This is an awesome album. It is probably the rawest thing Johnny ever recorded. I happen to have the original release vinyl in my collection, under Imperial Records, and the album cover is a gas. The back of the album contains the song credits, along with several pictures of Johnny in an unfortunate purple cape and the following: Winter is hard and heavy in his hypnotic blues bag. Before the recording session, there was Johnny Winter and his guitar. During the session, Johnny became the guitar.Ahh the 60s!

Blazing Texas Blues! at 2005-06-11
When you think Texas Blues, think SRV, and think Johnny Winter! The second disc of this set, is worth the price of the entire set! Second Winter has long stood out as a great album. But the addition of the bonus tracks makes this a must-have have for anyone who appreciates a blazing electric blues guitar!

Simply amazing!!! at 2005-05-29
Im new to Johnny Winter. I recently purchased his remastered debut. This second release is amazing. The guitar playing is mind blowing and I absolutely love Mr. Winters vocals. I believe his version of Johnny B. Goode is best Ive ever heard. If that wasnt enough the bonus disc featuring a concert from Royal Albert Hall recorded in 1970 that is the icing on the cake and then some. Hearing this different version of Frankenstein was great especially that drum solo. This concert couldve been released separately and would have stood out on its own and possibly may have been a classic live album. Nonetheless, it is a great bonus disc. I strongly recommend this release to anyone who love blues and/or rock.

If you like blues guitar.... at 2005-12-21
Its my own fault on the live disc may be the best 12 minutes of electric blues guitar Ive ever heard. It seems blues guitarists are everywhere these days, but at his peak - which just happens to have been around the time he was playing the Royal Albert Hall in April 1971 - Johnny was in a league of his own. No player today Im aware of comes even close. The 2nd Winter CD is great also, as is the rest of the live disc. Highly recommended.

Winter Was Never This Hot at 2005-11-17
Johnny Winter deserves his place in the pantheon occupied by Hendrix, Clapton, McLaughlin, Reinhardt and now Im running out. This is Texas electric blues at its best. The original LP was an instant classic, and this compilation actually improves on it with studio cuts and live tracks. Studio: Early In The Morning and Tell The Truth, both outstanding. Live cuts: 1-6 are all excellent, especially Mean Town Blues which is nothing short of dazzling. After that, tragedy strikes as brother Edgar steps forward to sour the milk. His singing resembles nothing more closely than a horrifying Ella Fitzgerald impression. However, by then it is too late for these missteps to spoil what is definitely a house-burning, rip-it-up rock/blues masterpiece. Check out Memory Pain.

a correction at 2005-08-30
This was not the only three-sided album released by anyone, ever, as the previous reviewer wrote. Heres another: Rahsaan Roland Kirk released The Case of the Three Sided Dream in Audio Color and it was three sides of music on vinyl with a blank fourth side . . . until the very end, when he suddenly appears and laughs at the listener for getting this far on a blank record. Not his best, but hilarious. As for the Winters, they lived in my town of Port Washington when I was growing up and we revered and feared and loved them. our rockers. they showed up in front of the music store on main street during a street festival once upon a time, when david pitt and barbara merjans band was playing. They took over the instruments and launched into, I believe, johnny be goode. We had a mini riot and stomped a car to death. Ahh, to be 13 again.

this is definetely a low water moment for mr winter with this poorly pieced together album.these songs were recorded over a span of 3 years with johnnys poor health slowing down the project. there is nothing good to recommend on this album. poor choppy guitar playing, vocals that are off key and off timing and a baffling selection of songs.hopefully he will get better at a future date and have the chance to release something that is actually entertaining.

Incredibly heroic performance if you consider the health problems. at 2006-02-24
Okay so most folk will compare this performance with Winter of 35 yrs ago. Some reviewers hurtfully and insensitively state that for 62 yrs old Johnny looks 80. Has anyone considered that this is due to the effects of albinoism ? 62 years old for an albino is the equivalent of 102 for a normal person.(how would some of you reviewers fare at 102 yrs old?) The skin wrinkles faster because of the lack of protection.Veins appear on the face. Eyesight fails completely. On top of this the guy has severe nerve palsy. Most albinos dont even reach 50 yrs old because of fatal health complications..at 62 all i can say is Johnny Winter must have the constitution of a shire horse. (similar to Keith Richards infact). Obviously in this regard Johnny is tougher than he looks and has taken after his own father who died at a ripe old age. The performance on this CD is remarkable, unbelievable considering the health obstacles against him. His guitar playing , although metered, is still instantly recognisable and is more fierce than alot of 20 yr olds today. His vocals have gone back to when he was 18 yrs old. They are still good in comparison to others around much younger than Johnny . Should he give up? NO. He IS a Bluesman.Gatemouth Brown didnt stop right to the end. Honeyboy Edwards and Robert Jnr Lockwood havent stopped have they? I wish Johnny Winter many more years of life as he continues his blues legacy. This guy has given me so much consistent musical pleasure over the last 35 yrs.

leave this one alone at 2005-11-03
i cant figure out why this album was even released. i know fans have waited about 7 years for a new album from johnny since the 1997 live in new york. in that album johnny was already showing signs of serious health problems that have affected both his singing and his once powerful guitar playing, the span of the last 8 years have seen johnny in such a state that his voice is but a whisper and his guitar playing is very labored. the only reason for 2 stars is a good backup band and a solid choice of material.this album will be a painful downer for any fans of johnnys music and playing

Age and health are catching up to him at 2005-11-04
I was excited to see that Johnny Winter had a new CD and couldnt wait to listen to it, but from the very first song it was obvious that time is catching up with him. Ive read that he is 60 years old, in the photo on the cover he looks 70 and unfortunately sounds like it too often on this CD. The songs are good, but not great. There are mostly mid-tempo blues rock songs that will keep you dancing and singing along, but there isnt one that will stick with you afterward. Johnnys voice is a whisper of his former mad dog growl and even his guitar playing has suffered. The speed and precision arent there and some songs it even sounds like hes having difficulty playing at all. This isnt a bad CD, just a rough one, especially if your used to listening to Johnny at his peak.

Go See Johnny In Person at 2005-12-19
First off, I do not own this CD. I do own all of Johnnys original releases (no collections) and I have listened to the Amazon sampler of this CD. I most likely will buy it at some point. If you are looking for Johnny in prime form buy; Johnny Winter, Progressive Blues Experiment, Second Winter (Legacy Edition), Serious Business, Third Degree, Let Me In and Hey Wheres Your Brother. Now, to the point. If you have the chance to see Johnny on his current tour, GO!!! I saw Johnny last night at the Granada Theater in Dallas, TX. The last time I saw Johnny was 30 years ago when he had Floyd Radford along for the ride. Johnny played more quality blues guitar last night then he did when I saw him in his rock n roll hay day. Sure, there were no nine minute Its My Own Fault solos and what he did play and sing was visually an effort for him, but it was excellent. He was enjoying himself and his voice was in good form, much better than this CD would have you think. Johnny played several cuts off this CD as well as a couple of Muddy Waters and Freddie King tunes and closed with Johnny Guitar all played on his Laser. The encore was out of this world! The curtain openned up and Johnny was sitting their with his Firebird and that all too familiar shiny steel tube on his finger! He played, Mojo Boogy, She Likes To Boogy Real Low and closed with, HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED, the crowd went nuts!!!Johnny at 60 plus, STILL plays the blues better than most ever did at any point in their career. Do not miss Johnny if you get the chance.Buy this CD, all of Johnnys orginal work is worth every penny.

Great guitar, grating vocals. at 2005-06-06
Granted, it is obvious that the guitar work here, is worthy of placement among the best blues records out there. But as always, Winters vocals range from the grating, to the almost comical charactures, they devolved into later(and not much later at that),in his career. The guitar work deserves 6 stars, minus 2 for the vocals = 4.

Messn With A Fool at 2005-09-25
I bought this LP in 1969. I then toiled for hours teaching myself how to play the lead in Messn with a fool. The technique, tone and style of JW at his peak is still unsurpassed. The music is simple put JWs guitar is a hurricane unleashed. His singing is also excellent. This man is no rock n roll blues afficionado. This man is the real deal.

White version of Robert Johnson and Son House. at 2006-01-12
I remember scouring the pages of The Melody Maker back in 1969 searching for any info on this new, ghostly apparition of a man who played guitar like no one else. i recall seeing this album on vinyl in the record store but i couldnt afford to buy it since i was only about 12 yrs old and my pocket money couldnt stretch. Im so glad this album is now on c.d and also with added tracks. Johnny Winter is unique. No one sounds like him or indeed looks like him. When he was on form, as he is on this record, NO ONE could match his feel for blues guitar. He was and still is the white version of Son House and Robert Johnson. Just listen to his version of Roberts When you got a good friend I even read once how Eric Clapton was walking past a venue and could hear Johnny Winter blazing on stage. Clapton said at the time hed been suffering badly from a virus and had a temperature of well over 100 degrees. Eric stated he stopped to listen and almost immediately he broke out in a cold sweat, his clothes dripping wet...and the fever broke and his virus lifted. Quite a story, but i believe it all. His vocals are very adaptable on this one. Two steps from the blues and Drown in my own tears show his Ray Charles /Bobby Bland influence. Wonderful vocals.

Now for some serious blues guitar at 2006-03-10
Thanks to the reviews that came before mine. I had been looking for a Johnny Winter cd (having nothing by him) and the reviews on this page convinced me to start here.Glad I did. As a guitarist I am blown away by Winters approach to the blues. No compromises to the current music scene going on in 69. This guy just brought the serious, serious blues to this album. He burns through a set of standard blues songs leaving the listener dumbfounded. His brother, Edgar, joins him on a couple of tunes with keyboards and horns. Most of the songs are performed with just bass and drums backing up Johnnys guitar. The sound of this remastered cd is incredible. I still have a hard time believing this was recorded in 1969. The only let down - its kind of short. But thats not a real drawback. Its so good youll just put it on replay or shuffle.Along with the original album artwork you get a short but informative write-up on what led up to the recording sessions for this debut. If youre a fan of Hendrix, Page, Clapton, and Beck and havent heard Winter then this just might be like Christmas day for you.

A Great Album! at 2006-06-26
Johnny Winter is quite simply excellent on guitar and vocals, John Turner and Tommy Shannon Round out his trio solidly and guest appearances from Water Horton, Willie Dixon and Johns brother Edgar make the music excellent. The songs Im Yours and Im Hers and Dallas are quite different and both great, excellent sound quality and liner notes.

Johnny Winter Album Review:
The ultimate blues/rock anthem. at 2005-07-17
The studio album of Johnnys stood out on its own back in the early 70s. Hopefully the sound quality on this 2-fer deal is better than the c.d. copy of Johnny Winter And that i have. The tracks are dynamic with strong interplay between Rick Derringer and Winter especially on the last track (Funky Music). For me Johnny Winter And...Live is totally beyond explanation. Most authorities on live albums have their own opinions...most say that The Who album Live at Leeds is the greatest, others say The Stones Get your Ya-Yas Out is the one. etc.Fair enough. I wonder if anyone has seriously considered the relentless energy expounded during this particular album. (i.e. J.W And..Live). From the very onset of Bobby Caldwells intro drumming to Good Morning Little Schoolgirl which opens the session you are taken on a breathless excursion involving some of the most blistering blues guitar ever played in history! It still has me on the edge of my seat now even after some 35 yrs of playing the recording. Most Johnny Winter fans must have several live albums of him but for me none of them captures the standard of musicianship and sound quality on this c.d. Anyone searching for the ultimate need not look any further. I have to add that Bobby Caldwells drumming on this live c.d will surely loosen the fillings in your teeth. He puts down such a totally manic groove , especially on Jumpin Jack Flash, that when this track was first released as a single in 1972 many forgot about the Stones version as being the original. I doubt if Johnny ever equalled his performance on this classic album, although the newly released live c.d which is part of the Second Winter Anniversary set comes very close to it.

An excellent introduction to the early years of Johnny Winter. It shows the scope of this often overlooked musician. A true american genius. Johnny B. Goode a ripping version that Chuck Berry would be proud of!!! And he plays it in the key of B. Come on in my kitchen is a beautiful slide piece. And the best tune, in my opinion, Its my own fault, shows off his vocal range and phrasing and a million guitar licks that every guitar player should know. Awesome and inspiring.

The songs on this cd are great and sound great. I would recommend this to any Winter fan new and old. Most of the songs came from the first two recordings Johnny did for Columbia. My complaint is that there is alot missing here. There is no way you can release a BEST OF from this guitar god on only 1 disc. This disc should have been joined by a disc 2, 3 and 4 with a nice booklet and put in a box. But for now, this will do just fine. BUT IT!!! Its killer tunes from the master of blues/rock.

Great music, Bad sound quality at 2002-07-03
I picked up this CD today, being a fan of Johnny Winter, despite the warning on the back of the CD which says Sound quality may not be equal to todays recording standards. Well, they werent kidding. This CD sounds pretty bad. This is due, however, to the quality of the original tapes, not the CD mastering. Im sure that they did the best they could with the material, but beware, the quality is weak. The songs were taken from different shows, so some songs sound better than others. At best, its about bootleg quality. Now on to the music itself. The note on the packaging is also right on about another thing: the performances DO kick .... They were compiled from shows in Austin and Dallas, Texas circa 1969 - 1974. Despite the shoddy sound quality, the performances are hot. Johnny is on fire on these tracks, particularly the scorching Mother Earth. He does a little slide playing on Black Cat Bone, and features a solo acoustic tune, Lowdown Gal of Mine. Two blues legends also make appearances. Jimmy Reed on Big Boss Man and Willie Dixon on Spoonful. Johnny Winter fans should check this out, but be warned the sound is weak. Listen to this with headphones with the volume turned up loud. Also, the recording dates arent listed in the liner notes, but its definitely early in Johnnys career, mostly likely the early 70s. Great Texas blues from a blues master. Just too bad the quality isnt better.

A Remaster from THE MASTER at 2005-03-20
This is the best from the best. Lets face it, Johnny is a truly one of a kind and a legend. There is no other sound like his. No one plays the guitar like he does, although many have tried and failed. Im sure that there are many others that can relate to first hearing Johnny on his debut album. Talk about being blown away! There was no one else like him then, still isnt. I, myself, am an avid fan of the blues. Johnny Winter helped to instill that in me as a young child. I thank Him immensely for that, and for providing us with years of incomparable music. Through the years, I have been in many clubs listening to music. You always get those trying to play the guitar, trying to get as many notes in as possible. I always think (when they are doing such a bad job), who do you think you are .....Johnny Winter? Hes a Master...it comes naturally...just like it did for Hendrix and Stevie Ray. I just have to say thank you, Johnny. You are TRULY an artist. You have truly set my soul ablaze for many years. I will keep listening. I will keep hoping for new music from you.

Scorching Guitar Work, Great Singing Too! at 2002-01-30
I first saw Johnny Winter on tour in support of his Let Me In CD in the early 90s and was shocked to see this frail, ghost-like figure come out on stage, but when he cut loose on the guitar I almost fell out of my seat. The guitar he carries obviously does the talking for Johnny. The Deluxe Edition release, which takes cuts from his three Alligator releases, only further illustrates the illustrated mans agility with the guitar. Every song is a gem with relentless guitar work, gravelly Johnny vocals and a blues feel all at once. The guitar work is so brilliant that it almost makes you feel tired, like you played the licks yourself! This is evidenced on Route 90,Mojo Boogie and other blues-rockers on this collection. My personal favorite is Third Degree, which is the title cut of his last Alligator release (that is, before this set was released). The laid back cut (laid back by Johnnys terms!) starts off innocently enough, but when the time comes for Johnnys treatment it takes on a whole new dimension of power. This collection is a must for guitar fans and Blues fans alike. Own it!

Johnny Winter is amazing and this CD shows why. I am a fan of Johnnys 70s work, and I was afraid that his later stuff may not be as good. I picked up this CD and found out otherwise. This material is all from the 80s, but it is just as good as his earlier material. Even if he uses the ugliest guitar in the world, Johnny Winter is a phenomenal blues player. Anyone who likes blues guitar should check this out, and also check out White Hot Blues by Johnny Winter.

A good collection of Winters Alligator sides at 2003-10-12
Johnny Winter recorded three electric blues-rock albums for Alligator Records in the mid-eighties (Third Degree, Serious Business, and Guitar Slinger), and 14 years later Alligator put out this inanely titled but enjoyable compilation. The Return Of Johnny Guitar opens with a great, rock n roll-flavoured take on J.B. Lenoirs Mojo Boogie and a swaggering Good Time Woman (both songs feature the excellent piano playing of veteran bluesman Ken Saydek). The six-minute Tin Pan Alley has Dr John occupying the piano stool, and other highlights include the catchy, up-tempo rocker Sound The Bell, Winters blistering rendition of Buddy Guys slow blues My Time After Awhile, a fine Its My Life, Baby, and a great take on Eddie Boyds soulful Third Degree, all of which feature Winters fiery guitar playing.A compilation that draws from only three LPs may seem a little superflous (the serious Winter fan probably has all three albums anyway), and Winters three Alligator albums werent among his very best anyway, but The Return Of Johnny Guitar does provide a good sampler for newcomers and casual fans.

JOHNNY WINTER THE RETURN OF JOHNNY GUITAR IS RED HOT! at 2000-11-17
Culled from Johnnys 3 80s Alligator albums (Guitar Slinger-Serious Business-Third Degree) these 13 tracks prove that after the guitar slingers CBS years he still had the fire to burn the fingerboard! Back by top notch Chicago blues players and the occassional guests Dr. John and Tommy Shannon (ex Stevie Ray Vaughan bassist)during his Alligator years, these recordings show Johnny at his best with no confetti or studio razzle dazzle. These raw to the bone blues tracks boil red hot. If you dont own any of the guitar legends Alligator albums, you must get this one! A must for all lovers of Johnnys music and blues music. Long live Johnny Guitar! A+

Johnny Winter Album Review:
Disappointing at 2004-03-13
This live album should have been really great, especially for fans who prefer Johnny Winters bluesiest material. The track list is pure blues, from Robert Johnson to Memphis Slim, and there are some fine moments here, but The Best Of...Live ultimately winds up being a disappointment. The sound is mediocre at best, and there is no seperation of the instruments. The drums, especially on some of the older tracks, sound like somebody is hitting a plastic bucket. And while Johnny Winters slide playing on the ten-minute Come On In My Kitchen is really good, his extended soloing on the twelve-minute Mean Mistreater is repetitive and, well, boring.Somethin Goin On Wrong is sort of a Dust My Broom-cover with lyrics from other early blues songs thrown in. Its okay, but it could have been a lot better with a tighter arrangement. Memphis Slims classic Mother Earth doesnt work tremendously well is this slow and not particularly melodic arrangement, but Winters playing is pretty good. Messin With The Kid is too good to ruin, and a rough rendition of Winters own Black Cat Bone is nice, except for the lousy sound. The sound on Mean Town Blues is even worse; Johnny Winters voice sounds fuzzy, like a old, scratchy LP, and is way too low in the mix. Too bad, because the song itself is okay. The Best Of Johnny Winter...Live has its moments, particularly Come On In My Kitchen, but it is mostly for Johnny Winter-fanatics who will probably want to hear these performances in spite of the sound, which goes from so-so (the first two tracks from 1978) to unacceptable (the last three from 1968).They arent exceptional enough for casual fans to sit through, however.2 1/2 stars.

What can I say about this live album besides great? It is just awesome! I found this album at the borders, and I was thinking it was a bootleg, and it seems not... whatever... anyway, if you like Johnny, you cant miss it! Again, this is such a great live from the late 60s when Johnny was at his peak! Ive never listened to such a great version of Mother Earth Mean Town Blues and Mean Mistreater. I also love this live albums, but this is as great, if not, greater than the rest of his live albums! Better Than I Remember at 2006-06-13
I saw Johnny Winter And when they were promoting this album in 1970(?) in Des Moines, Iowa. What a show!!! I had never seen a band so wild and good! They rocked the house that night! I thought I would catch up on the tunes this year and got the CD. I am surprised this is as good as I remember--actually better than I remember! The interplay on the guitars is exciting. Winter dominates the CD--even when he plays rhythm guitar. He truly is a talent of great magnitude. The band, Derringer and company (And), are tasteful and solid. They provide an excellent base for Winter to build on. I saw Winters rock n roll panned by Docendo--the blues reviewer guy--and I understand his purity for the blues. For me though, if an artist can play in more than one style and be as expressive and skilled as Winter, and if it moves me, then Im sold. Winter can play slide steel guitar, electric blues or rock n roll and Im there listening!

Johnny Winters Rock Debut Touted As Supergroup at 2005-08-03
Greeted with much hoopla when released in 1970, Johnny Winter And united the blues guitarist sensation with guitarist/songwriter Rick Derringer. It was a successful pairing, resulting in the immortal classic Rock And Roll, Hootchie Koo. A powerful quartet with solid material for the period. As you might expect, stunning guitar work. Mostly hard blues rock; but a cover of Steve Winwoods somber No Time To Live, the introspective Am I Here?, and Let The Music Play lend the album balance. A mostly forgotten great album from an unfortunately short lived group.

Just A Little More... at 2004-10-13
The preceding reviewers have perfectly assembled the essential greatness of this record. Buy it. Buy it now! Johnny Winter is simply one of the best guitarists of all time! I first saw him in 1969 at the Denver Pop Festival...an incredible bonus to my pilgrimage to see Jimi. Johnny was a blues purist yet to be fully amped up which, at 16, I could not yet appreciate. But from a steady diet of Hendrix, supplemented with licks from Cream and morsels from Zappa, I had a pretty good idea of what great guitarists were all about. Johnny Winter had it all.A year later, I saw Johnny Winter And touring on this record at the old KRNT theatre in Des Moines. Unbelievable! As the previous reviewer suggested of the show he saw at the Fillmore: maximum decibels delivering maximum pleasure. Winter and Rick Derringer live was a wonder to behold. I bought this record just before the concert and, over the next year, I listened to it constantly. Still do.Now, 35 years later, all the great things said before remain true. And the only addition I can make to the insights that my predecessors have made is that the vocal work on this record is a magnificent time capsule of a style of singing unique to rock recordings at the beginning of the 70s. Am I Here and, even more so, Out On A Limb showcase this style. It is a lost art but anyone who lived through the period knows it as organic when they hear it. Johnny Winter has made great music all of his professional life and guitar fans know him to be one of the true masters. This record is essential for so many reasons, not the least of which is that you know how he got here from there.

If you love Johnny Winter and love guitar jams you will love this--the sound, however, is not as great as the LP-this should be remastered--hopefully the domestic version will be remastered when it is released. Rick Derringer and Winter go thru some nice guitar battles on this CD--the tunes are great-well written--Funky Music is a 6 minute guitar battle that fades out at the end (why is this? Should have kept going)I saw Johnny Winter And at the Fillmore when this LP came out-it was great-2 hr set -2 sets-my ears were wrecked-could hardly hear for two days after---so loud---GET THIS CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then this is a killer CD. Johnny and his band simply rip it up here. Johnny shows that hes one of the best on this recording. Sadly, hes one of the forgotten guitar greats when it comes to naming some of the best. But players KNOW Johnny, like Rory Gallagher, is one of the players they listen to when wanting to hear the best stuff out there. I dont know what the negative reviewers here are listening to this on but, the CD thunders through my sound system ( Klipsch ) relentlessly. It never lets up. Johnny was on for this recording and I, for one, am thrilled! If you play guitar, LISTEN to this CD. Learn from one of the great legends. I saw Johnny play twice. I am thankful that I did. I hope this day never comes but, when Johnny passes on, people will rediscover this great performer again. And just like Rory Gallagher, I will say Ive always listened to him!!This recording makes me feel like I am in a smoke filled bar with my mouth open in awe the whole time. Im betting that everyone stayed right in their seats for this whole show. Thanks Johnny for keeping the blues alive! Go Johnny Go!! :)

A fine latter-day live album with plenty of blues goodness at 2004-02-07
Containing no hits but a number of fan favorites and cover songs, Live In NY 97 was assembled with the assistance of Johnny Winters fanclub, offering excellent versions of blues and R and B numbers, several instrumentals, and some of Winters best guitar playing since the early 70s.Most of these songs, and the instrumental numbers as well, are relatively low key, and thats when Johnny Winters prowess as a guitar player is most apparent. He barely ever resorts to shredding or generic rock n roll riffing; instead he plays one economical yet soulful solo after another, like on his version of Freddie Kings Hideaway, and a superb slide guitar intro to The Sky Is Crying. Those two tracks, along with The Sun Is Shining and Got My Mojo Working, are among the highlights here, but there are really no lowlights...Winters vocals may not have the power of, say Elmore James or Muddy Waters, but he fares alright, and this album features some of his best blues playing of the 90s. And even the less than original Johnny Guitar sounds pretty good, as does the swaggering R and B of Just A Little Bit.Only the predictable and repetitive She Likes To Boogie Real Low is a let-down; everything else is good, or even great.

I just cant understand how some of the previous reviewers can be so critical of Mr. Winter, who at 57 years old (which is far from old, I know) at the time of this recording, is truly lucky to still be around. But you have to remember...57 yrs for an albino is like 87 yrs for a healthy person---- Im sure if any of us have had to accept the numerous health problems that come with being an albino (let alone an albino who has wracked his system with heroin in earlier times) we too wouldnt last a WEEK living this way...very few albinos make it past 30 years of age so you who are critical of this man, be thankful he is still around. You reviewers say Johnny is nearly blind....he has ALWAYS been nearly blind...thats part of albinoism!! All I can say is Johnny Winter , like Keith Richards, must have the constitution of a shire horse!! He is ALOT stronger than he looks! Remember also, alot of robust looking bluesmen have long since, sadly, bitten the dust but Winter is still hanging in there! He is a guy who loves to please the crowd and give 200%, whenever he can. Alot like Stevie Ray V. did. He continues to amaze me....this c.d, although abit slower than his earlier stuff, still `is FAR better than anything put out by any contemporaries of his over the past 15 years. (e.g. eric clapton) This c.d is well worth buying. The track Blackjack and the last track Drop the bomb are particularly brilliant. His back up band is definitely one of his best. Im just glad to know that this guy is still around because he is today a living legend whose life is abit of a miracle in a way.

the rumors of johnny winters failing health and diminished guitar playing skills hit you right in the face in a lackluster live album from the once fiery albino. his vocals a very lethargic and his guitar solos are quite a struggle for a man who use to breeze across the guitar neck. for a non musician this is a listenable album with some good arrangements of classic blues songs, but for anyone who grew up knowing the skills of this guitar legend, this album is a sobering slap in the face.

only for collectors at 2005-09-26
From the name and Johnny Winters reputation as one of the great guitarists of all time, I thought that this might be good. Big mistake, the sound of this cd is the worst sounding I have ever heard. It sounds like a home made tape at times. First disc is a curious blend of very mid sixties style rock and roll kind of like beatles or beach boys music not blues. Most of it is forgettable. The second cd is live and mostly blues. The sound is awful but it contains the sets only redeeming value. Some of Johnnys true briliance shines through, it sounds mesmorizing at times. But overall do not buy this unless you are one of those collectors that must have everything Johnny has out.

One of the most reminded Rock s heroes! at 2006-06-14
Johnny Winter occupies a status place at the moment to take a look inside the Rock s immortals. The collective memory is fragile, and tend to overlook the particular achievements of this soloist, specially at those times in which the Rock as culture experienced a notable crossover as mass phenomena. The Sixties was the most explosive and creative decade in many senses: sine the Great Festivals the Rock Bands imposed a visible breakthrough. The Rock itself experimented a crucial crossroad in the middle Sixties: new sounds, new approaches, new expressions but above all a sensible attitude change. Vietnams disjunctive obligated many ensembles to define themselves, many of them opted by the easiest way and turned his vigorous sound to Pop (Chicago, Grand Funk railroad), but others remained loyal to the basic principle that maintained the Rock should be irreverent and rebel.Johnny Winter followed his bliss and decided to remain experiencing and playing according his personal code, specially in a choice decision when the Vietnam affair was over and the Rock lost its primary wildness. The Disco Music movement practically constricted the movement of Great Rock Bands in USA. But nevertheless and against all the odds, Winter, Gallagher, Buchanan, Ray Vaughan remained as silent heroes surviving in those ages of evasion and light diversion. Those notable artists knew how to distribute his discography between the Rock and Blues captivating non conformed audiences with handled sounds. Nowadays Johnny Winter s profile is extremely low for very known reasons. And iot would be a very good advise to this new Rock generation to take a look around one of the most heralds of the Rock `s essence who, despite his personal attitudes, a bulletproof honesty in which the Rock as culture meant and still (with very counted exceptions) keeps meaning. Winter: the blues man, the non restricted Rock guitarist, followed his bliss and deserved the coveted pearl.

This is a pretty nice collection, with several tracks culled from two of Winters best and bluesiest records, Johnny Winter from 1969 and 1978s hard-to-get White, Hot and Blue. This CD (almost) skips his most generic rock n roll material, which is a blessing, and it even includes some of Winters lesser-known gems like Leland, Mississippi Blues and his take on Walkin By Myself.White Hot Blues is certainly not an exhaustive career overview, and not every song is great, but it does provide a good introduction for the curious.3 3/4 stars.

Winter is a gem at 2001-07-27
I honestly dont undestand why Johnny doesnt get the credit he does. I stumbled on Johnny Winter a few yeats ago, after never before hearing a song by him. Its good that he is respected as much as he is in the guitar world, but I am surprised how little known he is. It may be over-the-top saying hes as good as Hendrix, but he definetly gets close, and his sound is one of the most Hendrixian Ive heard. Now as far as the cd goes, I think this is both an excellent start to Winter as well as a kind entrance into the blues. If anyone were to ask me which blues artist to listen to first, I would say Winter. I can also strongly recommend this cd to any Johnny Winter fan. Enjoy!

This is a great intro to Johnny Winters brand of rocking Texas blues. Its a collection of tunes from his first several albums starting with his 1969 debut. Johnny is right up there with Stevie Ray Vaughan among the greatest white blues guitarists.

Incredible playing at 2001-02-23
Its hard to explain why Johnny Winter is never mentioned when people talk about the best blues guitarists of all time. Well, not even when they talk about the best white blues guitarist. He can play the blues as hard as Hendrix, SRV or Albert King. He plays with some of that maniac intensity of Buddy Guy or Luther Allison, and he is also pretty good with the slide. Be careful with a fool is one of the best slow blues recordings by any artist, unvelievable.

johnnys 1st two classic columbia albums + live set at 2002-08-01
This boxed set contains johnny winters first two lps on the columbia label- johnny winter and second winter- coupled with the lesser known captured live. the first recording still stands as perhaps johnnys best album ever- really encapsulating his virtuoso but quite authentic blues stylings. from blistering electric guitar solos galore to a couple solo acoustic pieces and a very nice rendition of the ray charles classic drown in my own tears, this record is a must have for fans of winter, blues fans and guitar lovers of all genres. second winter, the followup is a bit more spotty- with a couple rock n roll songs (eg johnny b good) thrown in. winter also goes for a heavier elecric rock sound on several cuts, utilizing a wah wah pedal. the high point to second winter is his treatment of bob dylans highway 61 revisited, in my opinion the best cover of a dylan song after hendrixs version of all along the watchtower. the third CD, captured live is also a decent document of johnny circa 1970s in a live setting. overall, this box set is an affordable way to get all three recordings--keeping in mind that the 1st and 3rd CD included here are rather short (35 mins. approx) by todays CD length standards. but all in all a good deal.

Five after 4.00 a.m. blues for sure! at 2004-06-13
I first purchased most of these tracks in England on a mid-price double l.p called The Johnny Winter Story back in 1970. From the moment I heard the first track I was very impressed.I seriously thought from the onset that Johnnys guitar had been double-tracked, owing to the speed of his solos----- These songs mustve been done around 1962/63 and Winters voice sounds young and is yet to take on that gravelly sandpaper texture which was to come later, nevertheless his guitar work is ahead of its time-- ASTONISHING infact!..it is a shame that the quality of the sound is not that good in places, however it seems to add to the overall authenticity in a way. Today Ive come to realise how the guitar work and rhythm section remind me of those Excello recordings of bluesman Lightnin Slim ( e.g . on his c.d Wintertime Blues the harmonica/guitar sound is almost identical). Johnnys guitar licks are tight and slick and very accurate, conveying the talent of an artist much older in years than he was at this particular time. There are a few teenage angst love songs on here worthy of being overlooked(these were not on the original record and are probably just used as fillers on the c.d) e.g. Shed so many tears and Kiss tomorrow goodbye...but the real blues tracks are featured early on in the c.d. Listen to Thats what love does to you, for a Jimmy Reed type 12 bar, and Ease my pain for some real lightnin fast guitar licks a la T.Bone Walker. But my favorite track has got to be the 12 bar blues guitar instrumental called Five after Four a.m....this tune is one of THE BEST guitar solos ive ever heard. Its a slow, moody, atmospheric song, conjuring up that early morning time, and containing some of the most inventive and soulful guitar licks to ever be heard at that time in the early 1960s. From these early recordings you can tell where Johnny Winter got his influences from....mainly T. Bone Walker, Jimmy Reed, Freddie King and Earl Hooker and even during his tender years it can definitely be said he could somehow match their talent note for note if ever called upon to do so.

2003 was my very first Johnny Winter purchase. I wanted to hear Leavin Blues (recorded 1964-67) to hear where Led Zeppelin got their music for Travelling Riverside Blues (recorded in 1969) and I ended up liking all the other songs on this CD, which was a nice surprise. Except the songs listed are not the same on the CD, nor are they in the same sequence. On the CD they are 1. Ease My Pain 2. Thats What Love Does 3. Five After Four A.M. 4. Livin In The Blues 5. Leavin Blues 6. Parchman Farm 7. Bad News 8. 32-20 Blues 9. Kindhearted Woman Blues 10. Going Down Slow 11. Low Down Gal Of Mine 12. Road RunnerThis CD is a nice addition to my music collection and its CDs like this that make music research very enjoyable.
