Something for the Trail

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Good-Time Texas Dance Music at 2004-06-24 Gary P Nunn has always been more dynamic and more of a presence on stage than on record. His live shows are really something to enjoy. But his records, while decent, have never had enough substance and mass appeal in the world of country music to launch his career beyond that of a regional phenomenon. It was 30 years ago, when Jerry Jeff Walker covered Nunns London Homesick Blues, that he first attracted serious attention. Since then, Nunn has been able to capitalize on the name recognition that song gave him and build a career he might not otherwise have. That career has been steady, if unspectacular but Nunn has carved his niche. For the newcomer to Nunns music, it may best be described as good-time Texas dance music.Something For the Trail is yet another one of a string of Nunn recordings that are best enjoyed at an outdoor dance and barbecue. There is plenty of Texas imagery and 14 tunes tailor-made for boot scootin or buckle-rubbin. My favorites here are Perfectly Normal, Waltz With the Devil, Going Nowhere Fast and One Night Stand. Musicians in Nunns band include the famous fiddler Johnny Gimble and Gary Primich, a regionally well-known harmonica player.I named a few songs I like, but there is nothing on Something For the Trail that is unforgettable. I give the CD three stars not because there is anything wrong with the music but because Nunn does not use much of his own material and much of what he does use is formulaic. Despite that, I would recommend it ahead of scores of more popular country music CDs because what Nunn lacks in originality he makes up for in his delivery. If youre a fan of Texas-style western music, check this one out.

Except for one incident I had with security, it was a PERFECT evening!Ive got all his CDs; and this is as good as GUACOMOLE and ROAD TRIP, maybe even better (and the recording quality is A1A!)

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Not the real thing at 2000-08-20 Unfortunately, GPN without Jerry Jeff Walker is kind of like Paul McCartney without John Lennon - he needs Walkers raw and powerful counterpoint to balance out his own maudlin tendencies. Nunns London Homesick Blues is of course an incredible classic. If you dont already have it, get the original on JJWs Viva Terlingua, one of the best progressive country productions of all time.
Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
It doesnt get any better at 2001-10-11 I grew up with this album in college in the eighties. Gary P. played a lot around San Angelo, Tx and he is the real thing, or was at that time. I find it to be the best true to itself album around. It is a folk/country/eclectic/hillbilly rock album that may not work for the California reviewer, but its just right for me. My favorite is Tennessee road which is about Elvis. Then there is the Last thing I needed the first thing this morning. Really great stuff! I am only mad at myself for not listening to it in a couple of years. I am going to end this review right now so I can go put on the scratchy ol cassette thats been played until the you cant read the title.

Gary P. Nunn - TEXAN at 2003-06-01 How could someone from California review a Texas Country album? That person has probably never been to Texas and wouldnt know what great music is if it hit them in their bean sprout eating head. Gary P. Nunn is known for great music. All you California people should stick to Toby keith, hes more your speed. Get this CD, you will not be sorry, that is unless youre a Rascal Flatts or NSync fan.
Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Homesick by JJW over GPN...I dont think so! at 2004-10-03 The California reviewer who rates Jerry Jeffs London Homesick Blues over GPNs version should take the wad of wax out of his ear. Jerry Jeff is great, but for musicality and truly great listening, you either go with GPN or you GET THE HELL OUT OF THE ROOM!!!!
Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Quintessential Gary P. at 2003-08-11 This recording defines the broad spectrum of Gary P. Nunns ability as a front man (chalk up much of JJWs early success to Gary P. and the Lost Gonzos), not to mention his ability to craft songs that put you right smack dab in an inner tube on the Guadalupe River. The Lone Star anthem London Homesick Blues notwithstanding, these live renditions of some GPN classics such as The Nights Never Get Lonely, What I like about Texas, and Austin Pickers are probably the best live versions out there. In addition, the recording contains a HOT rendition of the JJW/LGB standard, Public Domain. All in all, a classic and timeless recording and a rare release from the vaults of Austin City Limits and KLRU. A vinyl collectible, but a CD treasure.

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
A classic, must have, CD. at 1999-07-30 If you like country ballads, you must have this CD. Its Gary P Nunn on the quieter side. While theres a fair share of cry in your beer songs, theres also some great upbeat songs as well. This isnt a party CD, but if your looking for some quiet feel good in a bad sorta way music, this is it.

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
GPN is what I like about Texas at 2006-02-12 What a great collection of GPN tunes. Being a displaced Texan living far from home in the Mid-South, this GPN cd takes me home. Gary is one of, if not the best song writer in Texas, maybe even the USA. You get your monies worth with 18 cuts. Every GPN cd tells a story and this cd is no exception. I think it is one of his best.

What I like about Texas at 2005-09-08 Love it! Have it in my car and everyone wants to know what cd it is. They want one. The Rocking Chair song brings up old memories.
Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Something To Listen To With An Ice Cold Lone Star at 2003-06-27 I originally bought this album for one song,London Homesick Blues/Home with the Armadillo, and was I surprised! This is a great album to listen to while youre sitting on the porch in the afternoon, just drinking a few brews(preferably Lone Star, cause, obviously, this is an album about Texas). Im not from Texas, but I grew up watching Austin City Limits and Mr. Nunns famed London Homesick Blues always played during the credits, making me wish I were in Abilene with the friendliest people and the prettiest women youve ever seen. After you hear this album, you too, will want to hop over the Sabine, head for Amarillo, and drink away the blues.

Totally Guacamole

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Homesick for Texas? Add this one to your collection. at 1999-06-03 In this album, Gary P. Nunn jumps from raucous Tejano rhythms to sad, sentimental ballads - with some Bob Wills-style Texas Swing mixed in. If you like early Jimmy Buffett albums, youll probably like this CD. As a listener who has lived in South Texas, I can say that Totally Guacamole truly captures the eclectic South Texas cultural atmosphere.

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
A GREAT ALBUM!!!! at 1999-06-29 This a great album that has many songs that Gary likes to play at his concerts. If you have the opportunity to see Gary live, go for it, he is well worth the effort! I saw him in Corpus Christi last Saturday night and had a wonderful time. He loves his fans and will sign anything you give him and had time to chat with everyone during the breaks. This album is very south TX and has a mexican flavor, Macho Man from Taco Land was a riot! I also like his home with the armadillo CD, it is a classic.
Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Nunn Better!!! at 2005-01-02 Totally Guacamole is GPN at his best...a terrific intro to folks who inexcusably are unaware of this giant talent! Just about every song is a winner--tuneful, clever, memorable. My favorites on this album are Purty Boys and Piece of the Ryman...only because Ive already heard and heard and heard many of the others so often. Worth buying, even youve got most of the other songs on other albums!

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Gary P. makes life worthwhile at 2000-08-01 This is my ABSOLUTE favorite Gary P. recording and I have been a fan since the Jerry Jeff Walker days. The music is perfect for 2-step, swing and waltz, and the lyrics evoke sentimental memories of riding in the pick-up with granddad, and fond memories of cooking chili on the cooker in the backyard. My daughter started learning Spanish from Gracias Por Esse. If you have ever set foot in Texas, you cant help but love this. The boy from Brownfield is the insufficiently appreciated poet lariet of the honky tonks.
