Keep Your Wig On
|
Fastball Album Review:
Love it! at 2005-07-30 I have been a Fastball fan from the beginning and I was anxiously awaiting more from them. When I first listened I was a bit disappointed - there were none of the harder rock tracks like Sooner or Later, This is Not My Life, She Comes Round, and Time which are my favorites from Fastball. Keep Your Wig On definately has more of a pop style with songs more similar to their previous radio hits. But after listening one or two times I found myself unable to get the songs out of my head (no pun intended)! The best tracks are Drifting Away, Airstream, I get High, Til I get it Right, Falling Upstairs, and Our Misunderstanding. If you are a Fastball fan you will love Keep Your Wig On - but give it a chance - you may need to listen to it a few times before you love it!
Fastball Album Review:
Surprisingly Good at 2005-06-17 Ive known Fastball since 98. Like most people The Way was my introduction to the band. Unlike many other one or two hit wonders, Fastball stuck in my head in the following years. I didnt buy any of their CDs until a couple years ago when I had to learn Out of My Head for a show. ATPMCB was an awesome album and hooked me into the Fastball bandwagon. For this CD, which Im surprised they came back together to make, I have to say I didnt really like it at first. Like someone else said, it doesnt have any obvious singles. But, after living with it for awhile, it really grew on me. Its very easy to listen to and the songs are easy to remember. The best song by far is I Get High. Despite its obvious unoriginality in format, its simply a great tune and possibly my favorite Fastball song. So, all in all, dont expect to hear any tracks from this on the radio... but its a cool CD and confirms that Fastball still kicks.
Fastball Album Review:
Great band at 2006-02-26 The songs Louie-Louie , Get High, and Airstream went straight to my new iPod. This is almost as good as Harsh Light Of Day. They have a mainstream sound. My brother made me a classic-rock gooru, but my buds in school have gotten me into this band. Hope to see them some time. Not as good as Badfinger or the Raspberries, but one of the best around today.
Fastball Album Review:
Great Cd From A Great Group at 2006-01-29 My brother introduced me to these guys and i havent stopped listening to them since.I thought they had split up after their best of collection. Then to my delight i saw they had released a new one in 2004.Where have i been huh? This a very solid disc indeed and a very plesant listen.Highlights include Drifting Away,Got High,Perfect World, and Red Light. The only song i found less than desirable was Falling Upstairs.
Fastball Album Review:
Fastball is back. at 2005-08-20 This really is a superb quality album. Before this one, I had All the Pain Money Can Buy and The Harsh Light of Day. My best friends dad is the manager of Fastball, so I was introduced when I was younger to this band.Keep Your Wig On only gets better than Fastballs previous albums. Not one song on the album is bad by any means and they really have honed their skill of writing wonderful pop rock ballads, accompanied by Miles and Tonys silky smooth voices.Every song is well written and the lyrics are great. Do yourself a favor and buy this album!

Painting the Corners: The Best of Fastball

Fastball Album Review:
This is justwhat you want: pure classics at 2003-01-05 It seems that fastball has had quite a career. They have had three albums, all with remembering tunes. There song have been featured on soundtracks, The NOW cds and they even had the biggest hit of the 1999 summer The Way But not many people want all the songs. They want songs that they remember, people wonder what fastball was like at there best. This album sums it up. It truly shows fastball at there best. It has all the hits that were on the radio... If you want to hear songs by fastball but dont want some of their other non hit songs flooding your album, this would be the album for you. Plus it has an enhanced CD for more fun. Buy it!
Fastball Album Review:
Good pop songs are underrated at 2005-05-09 I seldom write music reviews for Amazon but this album has had me humming all day. I cant say enough about how the well-crafted pop songs are catchy and intelligent. This album ranks up there with Squeezes Singles - 45s and Under and Gin Blossoms New Miserable Experience in terms of almost every song being solid. Will definitely get played over and over in my house.
Fastball Album Review:
four stars because of confusion at 2004-06-22 Why does Fastball have a compelation CD? They had only had three previous albums before this, and in my opinion that is too soon for a compelation album. Fastball is still a young band with, hopefully, more albums to come. They are a great band and I love their music. I would give this CD five stars for the material, but I take away a star simply because they havent had enough albums for a compelation.
Fastball Album Review:
Couldnt have been better... at 2004-06-21 When I first found out that this compilation existed, it caught me off guard. Fastball had only released 3 studio albums prior to this collection and in my mind it was too soon for this album to exist (note that the record company and Fastball had already parted ways when this record was released so its safe to say that this was released for economic issues only). When I read the tracklisting the obvious song titles were present, with one unreleased song (Black Rain) and one B-side (Emotional) added to the mix. Owning all of this material on the original studio albums, I passed on this collection but I can still vouche for this release since Im familiar with all of the songs and its worth any price you pay for it. Fastball is truly an underrated band that if you care to listen to this disc you too will appreciate this Austin, TX group just like all of the fans theyve picked up over the years. Highlights are (all of the songs are highlights, I mean this a Best Of package!) Are You Ready For The Fallout?, Slow Drag, Sooner Or Later, The Way, Out Of My Head and Fire Escape. PLEASE BUY THIS RECORD!

The Harsh Light Of Day (Limited Edition)
|
Fastball Album Review:
This is NOT Fastballs best. at 2000-10-17 It seems so many reviewers think The Harsh Light of Day is so much better than all their other albums. Its an excellent collection of vintage sounding pop songs, but it doesnt come near as good as their Sophmore release All the Pain Money can Buy. Whereas on ATPMCB every song was amazing and melodic, I somtimes find myself skipping tracks on the new release. On the upside their are the good songs like the super upbeat Your and Ocean, with some great Southern piano by none other than Billy Get Back Preston. Also there is This is not my Life, Love is Expensive and Free, and Funny How it Fades Away. The collectors edition features a pretty dull live version of The Way , but the two unreleased tracks will definitely get your foot tapping. It also features a cool book.
Fastball Album Review:
Pop is Not Dead at 2000-09-27 Fastball could be a throwback to 10-15 years ago, when bands actually matured and improved album after album. When compared to their previous releases, The Harsh Light of Day is a lot more consistent. There is still some filler on the album, but the gems far more than make up for it.At its best, Fastball delivers really well crafted pop music. Although the Beatles influences are present and clearly audible, they are filtered through the best of 80s pop (think Imperial Bedroom or Punch the Clock era Elvis Costello, Squeeze and Crowded House). Miles Zuniga and Tony Scalzo mostly write about relationships. They can be bitter and angry as in Love is Expensive and Free, looking for redemption as in Dark Street or cleverly tongue in cheek as in You Are an Ocean. But what distinguish them is the musicality. Their best songs are rich in memorable hooks, supported by impeccable harmonies and a solid production. The guest musicians include Brian Setzer (from the Orchestra and the Stray Cats), keyboardist Billy Preston (who played with the Stones and the Beatles) and Michael Ward from the Wallflowers. Finally, if you are going to buy this record, get the limited edition. You will get an extra version of their previous hit The Way and a couple of solid outtakes.
Fastball Album Review:
WOW at 2002-03-07 I have had this CD in the limited edition since the first day and it is still my favorite cd. Fastball is the best band ever and I will buy any fastball stuff within a reasonable price. I am really looking foward to their next cd!!!
Fastball Album Review:
Good American music at 2001-03-31 Well who here besides me is worried about the state of american music? Well i care even though im not american. If you are looking for some good music to hear i suggest picking up a copy of fastballs newest cd. They do everything right in this album. The only flaw with this album is its been done before. You can hear a heavy influence from past musicians mostly from the sixties, but hey the sixties were the best time for music. All the tracks range from alternative style rock to catchy pop. Im glad i found out about fastball, because i was tired of listening to korn and limp bizkit. Also check out their prior release because its just as good.
Fastball Album Review:
These guys can do it ALL!!! at 2000-12-14 Their versatility with so many different styles of music is truly amazing! From the modern/alternative sounds of This is Not My Life and Goodbye to irresistable 60s-pop in Dark Street to kick-butt classic power-riff rockers Morning Star and Time to southern rock Dont Give Up On Me to Mariachi-flavored Love is Expensive and Free to the beatiful, haunting ballad Vampires etc. they experiment (successfully!) with just about every genre of music out there. And you still get the great deal of 2 bands for the price of one, since Tony Scalzo and Miles Zuniga sound so different from each other. They each have some great strengths to offer. Id say Tony is the better singer and hes also great at writing clever, catchy lyrics. But Miles is the one with the real sense of adventure when it comes to trying different styles of music, and his cryptic lyrics always keep you wondering what hes really saying. Overall, the biggest difference between this and their previous 5-star All the Pain Money Can Buy is that this one is more of a Total Album experience. ATPMCB was so dominated by the incredible The Way that it took me a while to get past that one to learn to appreciate the rest of the CD. With Harsh Light I cant really pick any particular favorite so I have to listen to the whole CD repeatedly instead of playing one track 3-4X before listening to the rest of it. FASTBALL IS THE GREATEST BAND AROUND!!!!

The Harsh Light of Day
|
Fastball Album Review:
Soft Side of Fastball at 2004-11-21 Fastballs Harsh Light of Day is the second album Ive listened to by the group from Austin, Texas. This was a much-anticipated album for me after listening to All The Pain Money Can Buy. This albumen didnt quite live up to all of that hype. Fastball seems to have reached a mellower state after All The Pain Money Can Buy, perhaps they bought too much pain? The song Youre An Ocean was good, but definitely wasnt the Fastball I had expected. I was looking for much more like This Is Not My Life, instead of the pop sounding album I got. I liked the album, it just wasnt the Fastball I wanted.
Fastball Album Review:
Overlooked and under appreciated at 2004-08-14 Not a perfect album. . . but a great one. At times the production is a little intrusive, but the songs rise above. Great songs from both Tony and Miles from start to finish. Do yourself a favor. Do yourself a favor and grab this one today.
Fastball Album Review:
BUY IT!!!! at 2004-08-02 Honestly, I cant say enough for this AWESOME cd. This has been said in other reviews, but Fastball does have a sound that can be described as Modern-Day Beatles. All of the songs have their own character and all speak directly to my heart. I know it sounds corny, but I have a close relationship with this cd, now. It is amazing how greatly this band matures with time. I will leave you with this: Buy It!!!!!!
Fastball Album Review:
Great catchy tunes album!!! at 2005-07-19 I absolutely love this album. All the songs are great to listen to and I know almost all the lyrics by heart. This is a great band. I was hooked with their music when I bought All the Pain Money cant buy. That album also had great songs, but this album has unforgettable songs. From start to finish, Its great. These songs are great pick you up after a hard days work, which is what Funny how it fades away says. They undeniably have a Beatlesque sound from songs like Goodbye and especially Love is expensive and free. The way the lead guitarist, Tony Scalzo, and the bass guitarist, Miles Zuniga, alternates lead vocals is what makes both albums great. I also recommend getting the limited edition of this album which has a great live recording of The Way.
Fastball Album Review:
Funny How It Sticks With You at 2006-05-23 Once again Im very late in saying what should be said. This is easily one of the hundred greatest rock albums ever. Fastball is THE greatest band you never heard of. Most people hear their songs on the radio and think theyre hearing someone else. They think, Oh thats an Elvis Costello song or Tom Petty or Eagles but it Fastball. The way you tell is its usually better. This album shows there songwriting genius. Luckily someone already committed sacrlege so I will reiterate. Tony Scalzo and Miles Zuniga are the Lennon-McCartney of this era. Theres not a single false note on this album. Ever song is brilliantly clever without being pretenious in anyway and where as almost every band, even the great ones, try to unsuccessfully break out of their one sound and represent as many different genres as possible, Fastball does succeed and seemingly effortlessly. Often the best movies and songs take time to warm up to and many that are immediately accessible wear thin fast. All the cuts here have the amazing trait of being immediately accessible and never wearing thin. In fact their songwriting has the trait of sounding familiar but not like some other song. Its called great songwriting. Become familiar with the two greatest tunesmiths working today and if you get the chance to see them live make sure you dont miss it. Plus theyre really personable, cool guys. Well, Tony anyway. Oh lighten up Smiley. This album is a ten out of five. You cant go wrong buying any Fastball album though.

Fastball Album Review:
a kid saying its a pretty good song at 1999-09-11 I thought that out of my head was a pretty good song. It is kinda slow, but it is still a very good song. I think that it is not worth 15 bucks for the single though. because of the price I would just buy the whole cd for a few more bucks. Plus the cd ,All the pain money can buy has out of my head, plus fire ecscape and the way. overall it is a pretty good song, but I donthink it is worth just buying the single, get the whole cd
Fastball Album Review:
This song is really great at 2000-07-28 Well, I actually dont have the single itself, but I wanted to commment on just Out of my Head. Anywho, All the Pain Money can Buy was one of the first CDs I ever bought and I love it to death. I would just spend hours listening to it. And I must admit, I did buy it for The Way, but I soon found out that all the songs were great, and I especially loved Out of my Head. I think its a really wonderful alt-rock song. Its catchy and just the right length. After it became a hit, I was somewhat proud that I could say I liked it before that. And another thing is that I think its the type of song that people who like different types of music can all enjoy. Not that the song itself is a multi-genre song. But some younger kids I know, all of whom like either groups such as Limp Bizkit or Backstreet Boys, would ask me to put in my CD so they could listen to Out of my Head on repeat. Pretty neat if you ask me.

a really fun album at 2006-02-14 I was about 10 or 11 when this album came out and I was among the millions who loved the song The Way. I bought the cd and, for a while, they were my favorite band. But years past and my musical tastes drifted toward the hardcore/ metal/ death metal spectrum. But, recently, I dug this old cd out and put it in, on a whim. I had forgotten what a great band Fastball was (and still is). This album is so different and so upbeat compared to what I now listen to that I am just constantly drawn to it. The songs are simple, yet really impressive. Tony and Miles have two really distinct, good voices and the music itself puts you into a good mood. I really like this album and Im really glad to have unearthed it after all of this time.
Fastball Album Review:
A Warm Fuzzy Feeling, indeed at 2006-01-18 FAST BALL threw me a curve. I didnt expect this and Im a better listener for hearing their CD. Anyone who likes power pop will find the hooks a plenty on this release. Thats one of the places I like to visit from BIG STAR to the UNCLE DEVIL SHOW, I eat this stuff up. Like the title one of NICK LOWEs early records: Pure Pop for Now People. Its almost as if PAUL MACARTNEY were in the studio saying, not bad fellows, not bad at all. Its fresh yet familiar all at once, an absolute home run. THE WAY which opens the CD, is a stone c old smash. An instant classic. The most modern sound on the disc. Sort of like the best moments from a great, lost SUGAR RAY single. A song so summery good youll be playing it at your next BBQ and have folks asking you Who is that band? Its that good; the kind of song John Cusacks character in Hi Fidelity would play in his record shop in Chicago. Wonderful harmonies, evoking British Invasion images of Beatles.FIRE ESCAPE received considerable airplay on WXRT-FM (Chicagos Finest Rock) at the turn of the century, and while not my personal favorite, is certainly the reason these popsters made a little splash during the Y2K era.I feel that things really pick up with tracks 6-12, where there is a half dozen+, cheerful pop moments, so well crafted, youll wonder where these guys came from, have been...and why they werent discovery by more rock hounds.WARM FUZZY FEELING, hits one out of the park. This track could easily have come off a vintage SMITHEERNS LP.SLOW DRAG Has the craftsmanship of the brothers FINN in CROWDED HOUSE or the woefully underrated REMBRANTS.GOOD OLD DAYS, like The KINKS, has a snappy beat, with a punched up horn section reminiscent of BS and T or later day GRASS ROOTS. Me likes the Old Days, Good Times I Remember. You know, the horny sounds of CHICAGO. CHARLIE THE METHODONE MAN, OUT OF MY HEAD. Get out your Bic lighter as CHEAP TRICK fans re-unite, ZNUFF said.DAMAGED GOODS, BADFINGER anyone? Listen for the ELVIS COSTELLO-styled vocal presentation on this one.NOWHERE ROAD reminds me of AL Koopers immortal keyboard play circa Dylans LIKE A ROLLING STONE, meets `BALLAD OF JOHN and YOKO, before evolving into a salute to THE WHOs I CAN SEE FOR MILES. As Keith Moon once said: If you want to play load, hit the drums hard.In the end FASTBALL sounds the most like FASTBALL, and thats a good thing.FASTBALL touches them all and left me with a warm fuzzy feeling. You should try FASTBALLS pitch too.

Nice ear candy !!!! at 2006-03-09 In a world where most artists assume they have to produce noisy, discordant, and non-melodic fodder for the equally beguilled public these guys are a nice retreat. Just plain good ole rock that you can play all the way thru without torturing yourself by trying to listen to it 10 times before you get it like some of the crud being passed off as art these days. (yes, I do hate emo and death/thrash metal)This is the only album of theirs that Ive listened to and looking forward to grabbing the rest of their work.

A great, upbeat song that keeps you going. at 1999-05-09 I always liked upbeat songs like this one. I would easily get bored listening to oldies on my car radio, but since this song is played every day or two it perks me up. Its not the kind of song you would play if you were, say, doing homework or reading, but its great for upbeat activities and even parties. I definitely recommend this single if youre suffering from depression; it helps.

Fastball Album Review:
Greatest song of the millenium! at 1999-02-11 I had given up hope of ever hearing a decent new song in the 90s til I heard this one! This is the first song Ive heard in 10 years or more that has made the list of Last sound I want to hear before I die songs. (only about a dozen songs on this exclusive list and Ive been around for a while!) I love Tonys voice and the way he and Miles harmonize together. Miles guitar solo is HOT HOT HOT!!! It reminds me a little bit of Hotel California (see I told you Ive been around for a while) but its more happy and upbeat. And Joey is a fantastic drummer, that Latin beat really reaches out and grabs you. I also loved the imaginitive lyrics. I think he hit on a universal fantasy everyone can relate to--with all of us having jobs we hate, dysfunctional families, annoying relationships, etc. who wouldnt want to just drive off and leave it all behind them? This song is so burned into my brain circuitry that one night this summer when I was about to go home from my job (a definite exit to eternal summer slacking), my car wouldnt start and I had to go find someone to give me a jump, and instead of mumbling Oh s__t! like normal people I was walking across the parking lot belting out AND WHEN THE CAR BROKE DOWN THEY STARTED WALKING! What can I say, Im totally obsessed with this song and this band!

Make Your Mama Proud
|
Fastball Album Review:
Whats not to like? at 2001-08-10 How can anyone not like this? Ive read the reviews that basically say, Ewww, too punky and wondered, What are you people thinking? Granted, I first heard Make Your Mama Proud and Nothing on a snowboard video in 1995 (I think?), so maybe I came to expect all their songs to sound like that, but still...Yes, some of the faster tracks like Eater and Knock It Down are more one-dimensional and much harder-edged than later Fastball stuff, musically speaking; but even so, the lyrics are spot-on. I mean, havent we all met someone like the narrator of Eater (I will make you hate you)? Who hasnt known someone (or been someone) whos scared of growing up and lets that fear get in the way of his relationships (Make Your Mama Proud)? Those songs, plus Emily, Seattle, Are You Ready for the Fallout and others, are by turns angry, goofy, frazzled AND struggling toward maturity--in other words, remarkably similar to what its like for many twenty-somethings in America these days.Bottom line: If you like the Fastball youve heard on the radio, stick to their latter two releases. But if you like a bit more edge and, uh, assertiveness, while still maintaining that trademark Fastball knack for catchy melodies--or if you thought the radio Fastball was nice and all, but a little too laid-back--this CD is the one to get.

Wonderful! at 2004-08-02 So youve probably heard of The Way on Fastballs second cd, but what about their music before it all. Make Your Mama Proud really goes back to the roots of the band and although some songs may not strike your fancy, overall it comes together as one BEAUTIFUL work of art! Yes, this is more punkish than their other albums, and yes there is a little foul language. However, I am not a very punkish person and I still think that this is one of their best cds. Buy it! Its worth it! Whats not to like?
Fastball Album Review:
Their Sound Never Changed! at 2002-01-26 I got this CD for Christmas and honestly I wasnt that excited about it at first. I LOVE their other two CDs. People have said in other reviews that if you like the radio songs that Fastball has you wont like this. I very much disagree. This is the same Fastball. Usually you can chart a change of sound as a band slowly attains fame. With Fastball, you just have the same fantastic sound. I LOVE this. My advice: If you like the other two Fastball CDs, get this. Its just as good. Songs like Are You Ready for the Fallout, She Comes Round and Seattle make me want to hug this band and thank them for being so fantastic. Nice thing is, all the tracks on this disc are good. Some take longer to get used to, but I was hooked on this CD all the way after the second listening. Hooray, Fastball!
