Bobby Bare Album Review:
A fresh album from a versatile great singer at 2006-01-26 It is really nice to hear something new from this great underrated Country singer after over 20 years. Bobby Bare is a very versatile singer and his songs range from the cheerful novelty songs such as his biggest hit Marie Laveau to very slow sentimental and emotional songs he did so well such as The Deepening Snow. Those who prefer more of his later fast novelty songs may not particularly appreciate this new release of his which has brought him back to his original style. This new effort of Bobby Bare has much influence from his son with some very modern unusual backing. The rich music does justice to the songs and blended very well with Bobbys matured laid back efforts. Occasionally it even sounds a little jazzy but appropriate. The choice of songs may at first seem unsuitable for Bare to some people but it turns out very well indeed. When it comes to doing cover versions of classic songs, most will expect something very different and unique and Bare has done just that. I particularly like Are You Sincere, Yesterday, when I Was Young and Everybodys talking which was really very well done both vocally and music wise. Bares laid back emotional voice do justice to them. Im An Island is my favorite and the more I hear it, the more I like it. The country classic Am I That Easy to Forget really suits him 100% with a fresh touch. This is certainly an over due classic album from a top country singer. Those who likes his earlier RCA efforts will appreciate this CD even more. This CD also contains a Shel Silvestein song The Ballad of Lucy Jordan which he classically did so well. If you do not like the CD on first listening, give it another listen and I can guarantee you that it will grow on you. The more you listen to it, the more it will make it difficult to put down! It is certainly worth getting a copy.

Disappointing at 2006-05-03 I was excited when I heard about this. Sorry, I cant handle it. Bare, buddy, you should stay in retirement if this is going to be the result of your new efforts.

Great stuff at 2004-07-20 Reviewer c j lock (above) put it perfectly. Bobby Bare is probably the most under-rated country singer ever. If youre looking for great, REAL, country music.. buy this album.
Bobby Bare Album Review:
The Greatest Of Them All at 2002-02-17 I dont know of any Bare album that does not deserve a four / five star rating, and this is no exception. I dont care what anyone says, this man has the best country voice of them all. No squeaky singing through nose vocals, but pure richness and warmth coming from his heart in every song. His lyrics are clever and just about every song tells a story that one can relate to. I am from South Africa, but saved up to pay him a visit in Nashville. Believe me, he is as genuine in the flesh as he is in song. Ask anyone who knows him. This album is a must for any true country music lover (old or new country). He has never received the acclaim that he deserves, simply because he was way ahead of his time. I repeat, this album is a must.

Outstanding at 2006-02-26 What more can be said of one of the finest voices of Country Music. With his straight-forward, no-nonsense, delivery of a song, Bobby Bare is a legend. And this collection of 47 songs is a true testament to his talents. All original songs and recordings; well mixed and delivered. Best of all, a 2 Cd set at a One CD price. My highest recommendation. A++++
Bobby Bare Album Review:
A good collections of his eaarly his at budget price at 2000-06-18 This 2 cds collection consists of all the early single releases of Bare until 1969. Some, such as the very touching song Which One Will It Be has never been available on CD. All the tracks are of excellent quality as they are re-mastered and produced by the Boss of Bear Family records who produces top quality box sets of hard to find recordings. All the early hits are here and many of the songs featured will remain your favourites once you give them a good listen. They are songs that will not be easily tyred of and will remian your favourites a long long time. A 2cds set of 47 excellent quality remastered songs at this budget price. It is definitely worth every cent you pay for. I even bought two sets in case the first one wear out! My favourites are many. She Picked a perfect day, They covered the old swimming hole, Town that broke my heart which one will it be are some of the rarer goodies. Buy it and you will not regret it.

Bobby Bare at 2000-01-13 This is a great 2 CD. Including several tracks that I still mist till today. Bobby Bare is in mine view the greatest country singer and deserves 10 stars. In 1995 I met him in the Netherlands and spoke with him. Iam still waiting for new CDs of his LPs A bird named yesterday,Folsom Prison blues, the real Thing, Drunk and Grazy, so I hope that soon all his LPs will be avaibale on CD.

Bare tracks from the late 70s and early 80s at 2003-09-03 Bobby Bare is one of my all time favorites. I must admit I like his RCA material much better, but the music here is more rowdy, fun and kickin. This is a good sampler from his Columbia years. A must for the Bare fan!! The man needs to be in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Bobby Bare Album Review:
Its Better Than No Bare at All, I Guess at 2004-10-22 I recall a pair of sisters, lovely girls without dates, playing Shame on Me over and over on the jukebox, but Mr. Bare has never emphasized his 1962 successes (including a much underrated To Whom It May Concern). He was playing a small country bar in Chicago just two years later when I saw him doing those songs, medley style, including Dear Wastebasket and I Dont Believe Ill Fall in Love Today. Not long afterwards came Detroit City and he was in the big time. Pity that all of the songs here couldnt be the originals (like To Whom it May Concern). Go for the CD that has those originals if you want to be stirred by memories. This isnt it.

Bare and Friends at 2000-04-08 Has anyone ever heard of this album? To my understanding, its available only on vinyl. The song in particular im looking for is THE SINNERS PRAYER. This was one of the best albums ever put out by this artist, and I cant find even the title anyplace. Its like it vanished from existence!
Bobby Bare Album Review:
Another Rerecording at 2003-02-19 Bobbys voice as with all others has lost the range he used to demonstrate. This is not the worst case of a re-do I have had the displeasure of hearing, but it still is far short of the original offerings of Bobby during the 60s. As a courtesy to all involved, Be aware these are not all of his original recordings. Buyer Beware!!

Bobby Bare RULES! at 2001-01-10 I was very pleased to find this CD because I really dig Bobby Bare and for some reason its incredibly difficult to find alot of his music. Hes an original outlaw as far as Im concerned. And he made alot of cool songs. Two of his greatest albums are DOWN and DIRTY and DRUNK and CRAZY. I cant find these anywhere!Does anybody else worship the guy like me? If so, youd better grab this LIVE at GILLEYS CD while its here or it just might vanish like the rest of his stuff did. Alot of great songs! Its worth every dime!

Bobby Bare Album Review:
Bare Tracks Through Moderate Material at 2000-04-15 Bobby Bare is undeniably a legendary songwriter and performer; when he is at his best, as on his classic Lullabys, Legends and Lies, he exudes an intelligence and charm that elude most performers today. Over the course of his long and varied career, Bare has recorded for several labels, and this release, Bare Tracks, attempts to summarize his seven-year stint at Columbia, with mixed results. One of Bares strengths is his ability to transcend the most mediocre of material and unfortunately, theres plenty to be found on this release. When he and his songwriting collaborator Shel Silverstein are at their peak (as on the two best-known tracks here, Numbers and Tequila Shiela), Bare is simply unstoppable, with all of his prodigious talent on display. Unfortunately, several of Silversteins other songs seem unmotivated and careless; Bare fights hard to maintain sheds of dignity in tracks like Greasy-Grit Gravy, Food Blues and Diet Song, but he succumbs to the sub-par material. He turns in some stunning work on two Guy Clark cuts, Let Him Roll and New Cut Road, but the album as a whole seems distant and unstable. Personal Favorites: the sharp commentary on gender communication found in Numbers; the twisted tale of a fugitive on the run in Tequila Shiela; and the rollicking rhythm bouncing down New Cut Road. Representative Lyrics: She said, Well, another one of those macho matician men/ Trying to grade all women on a scale from one to ten!/ Now you give me an eight?/ Well, thats a generous thing to do/ Now lets just see just how much I give YOU. (Numbers); Pour me another tequila, Shiela/ Take off your new satin dress/ I crossed the border/ And I beat the dealer/ For all of the gold in Juarez. (Tequila Shiela)

The Essential Bobby Bare

Bobby Bare Album Review:
A Minority Opinion! This One Grew Stale. at 2002-05-13 I just completed a review of The Essential Dotty West in which I wrote that the CD grew on me the more I listen. This is the opposite. I grew tired of The Essential Bobby Bare very quickly. I believe this is due to the fact that Bobby sings mechanicallly, just like a performer in the studio grinding them out.Perhaps Bobby has made one bus tour too many. I may be prejudiced because Ive read that Bobby was one of the early OUTLAWS who, it says here, tried to ruin country music for their own gain. On a positive note, these Essential group of albums seem to br very well produced. I would urge amazon listeners to acquaint themselves with this series of classic country.
Bobby Bare Album Review:
Bobby Bare as good as expected at 2005-08-21 I havent heard a Bare song on the radio in quite a while and it is quite enjoyable to listen to his songs. The best being Detroit City followed closely by 500 miles from home and The All American Boy. The delivery service was better than expected and the cd as I stated is a good one. I havent had the oppertunity to watch Path to Power as of yet, so I can offer no review on this dvd, except to say the delivery service was better than expected.

Bobby Bare Album Review:
Decent album at 2005-09-01 One of the better Best OF.... albums. To be honest, I care little for the sound of 70s country music, although there were a few notable exception. Bobby Bare, despite his early Rock-n-Roll venture, stayed true to form and put out a few memorable hits for a wasted decade. I could do without the obligatory father to son talking song so popular in this era (Thank you Red Sovine, Bill Anderson, etc....), but the good far outweighs the bad on this album. Not sure that Bobby was ever an outlaw (and after judging by todays definition of that crowd, he may not want to be associated with the term anyway!), but he did things his own way; which is why I think he flourished during the death of the Nashville Sound and the increasing Disco beats of Barbara Mandrell and Kenny and Dolly. The recordings on this albium are superb, and you can really appreciate Bobbys straight-forward, no-nonsense, approach to presenting a song. Overall, I give the album a grade of B.

SOME Essentials Here + Cowboys and Daddys (No) at 2005-01-11 Lackluser reviews, folks. You can do better. A fair number of hits but still ignoring Shame on Me and Just to Satisfy You. Not all essentials have to be hick stuff (or on virtually every other Bare CD). And for those still looking for Cowboys and Daddys, try MusicMatch.com and look for the Masters album.

Best of Bobby Bare at 1999-12-10 Having played five CDs, this one offers the type of sound I prefer in country western. Slow and sentimental
Bobby Bare Album Review:
A Country Gentleman at 1999-01-21 Bobby Bare made his way into the music scene almost by accident . He recorded All American Boy and another artists name was put on the record (Bill Parsons)..Almost all of the selections on this cd are from the very start of Bobbys RCA Victor days. This also gives you a chance to hear his grammy winning Detroit City in its original form.
Bobby Bare Album Review:
A hard-hitting throwback to countrys musical roots at 2000-05-07 For vocal grittiness, heartfelt lyrics and sheer versatility, few country artists compare to Bobby Bare. Unfortunately, so many of his hits have been covered by other artists that very few followers of country or cross-over music are aware of how good Bobby really is.Three of his best (Detroit City, 500 Miles Away from Home and Green, Green Grass of Home) have been covered so many times theyre close to buried. Although some of the newer releases had better commercial success, none has the honest, straight-forward power of Bares delivery. His first big hit, All-American Boy, was released under the name of Bill Parsons, and takes a good natured jab at the early success and styles of Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. The beautiful Four Strong Winds gives a gentle nod toward the Western side of country, while Millers Cave has a folksy sound oddly reminiscent of the Kingston Trio. For sheer gut-wrenching lyrics, the Streets of Baltimore is an emotional tour-de-force.There are many country artists who are better known than Bobby Bare. Many are more commercially successful. However, very few are more talented. Give a listen to The Best of Bobby Bare and let his refreshing, unadorned vocals take you on a guided tour of the classic sounds of country music.
Bobby Bare Album Review:
Bareing Down at 2002-07-14 Politicians promise a chicken in every pot. Bobby Bares Detroit City CD should be in every home.I dont usually listen to lyrics, but his lyrics on Detroit Cityare humorous and logical. Tequila Sheila is a bombshell!
Bobby Bare Album Review:
Not Bad; Could be Better at 2005-01-06 I think Bobby Bare clung to country music despite his early success (1962) with Shame on Me, much beloved by a LOT of country music lovers I know but not a hardcore country song by any means. But this package has one of my very favorites, Just to Satisfy You, later covered by Waylon Jennings, also not hardcore country. With Detroit City, Bobby knew what his future would be; it was followed by 500 Miles From Home (a variation on other renditions) and a lot of other listenable hits. I would like to have seen Thats How I Got to Memphis written by Tom T. Hall in this compilation, but what IS here is good. Bobby had one of the great voices in modern country music. I recommend this one.

Bobby Bare Album Review:
Bobby Bare hits a homer! at 2002-10-16 This was the first album I ever bought, at the age of 12, with some money I had saved by mowning lawns. I listened to it for years until I wore the vinyl record out. The Winner and Marie Leveaux could be heard on the radio at the time but the real beauty of the album, I think, is the seldom-heard Roaslies Good Eats Cafe and In the Hills of Shiloh. Today, my wife uses Rosalies to teach her 12th grade English students about descriptive writing. My two boys and I giggle at the Mermaid, Paul, Sure Hit Songwriters Pen, and all the other great ones. Thanks Bobby and Shel for this artistic collaboration -- and for thirty years (and counting) of enjoyment.
Bobby Bare Album Review:
An artists artist. at 2002-03-10 Many of these reviews are good but also erroneous. This is probably the best theme album of all time in any genre. But it was NOT the first theme album in country music. That distinction belongs to Johnny Cash in the early sixties. To appreciate ones music one does not have to denegrate someone elses music or contribution, or to have novice listeners make silly statements without them having the scope to be in the know. Johnny Cash says Bare is his favorite, he also was known as Jennings favorite. He also should be given more credit for the sweeping changes in the artist as being in control of their music.Far before Waylon and Willie , Bare learned from Cash how to rule his music from Nashville producers. Listen and enjoy . They are all favorites - but the last The Winner is a classic!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of any genre. Thanks Mr. Bare for your lifes music. Brad Stender.

Bobby Bare Album Review:
Best Concept album ever! at 2000-10-14 I first heard of Bobby Bare when his song Detroit City was enjoying very frequent airplay way back in 1960. I bought the album 500 Miles Away From Home and practically wore it out playing it and have become a fan of Bobby Bare since. Bobby Bare has kept up with the times and his style of music changes somewhat as years go by. However, he still maintains his original to the heart laid back style of singing. Even though he has enjoyed many chart successes including the Best Country Song Grammy award for his Detroit City, none of his songs has ever reached the number one spot until 1972 when he released this very successful album Lullabys Legends and Lies. One of the songs from the album namely Marie Laveau went to the number one spot in the country chart and was his only song to do so. Lullabys, Legends and Lies was Bares most successful album and I feel it deserves a much more detailed review for the potential buyers. It was also his most successful concept album. Bobby Bare is the first artist to come up with a concept album. His very first was a concept album about reminiscing the past..... a 1967 album called A Bird named Yesterday with songs mainly written by Jack Clement. It is my all time favourite LP of Bobby Bare which I hope will be available on CD soon. . Those who love Lullabys Legend and Lies will surely love this album. As a fan of Bobby Bare for 40years, I do agree that this is one of Bares best concept albums with excellent to the heart interpretation of Shel Silvesteins lyrics. The very talented Shel was an excellent song writer having written numerous hits including A Boy Named Sue for Johnny Cash, Ones On The Way for Loretta Lynn, Sylvias Mother for Dr. Hook and The Unicorn for Irish Rover. This album consists of 14 lullabys, legends and lies. It was very successfully done with an added hysterical atmosphere with Bobby Bare telling his lullabys, legends and lies to a bunch of very appreciative live audience which included cerebrities and friends of Bobby Bare such as Waylon Jennings. You can actually hear the response from the audience and appreciate just how much they are enjoying themselves. Marie Laveau, Winners, Daddy What If and the tittle song were chart successes. Marie Laveau tells an interesting tale of a witch. This song not only became the number one chart hit but also Bobby Bares most requested song during his concert performances. The audience just love the witch yell! Daddy What If became a top 5 hits after RCA made a successful promotion to the DJs. The song was a duet with the then very young Bobby Bare Jr. It is a cute family song and very difficult not to like. I love the song Wonderful Soup Stone with its up tempo beat and a very melodic chorus. The Winner, another chart hit with a typical Bares tongue in cheek humour, tells a very interesting and funny story of how a smaller man picked a fight with another twice his size, who instead of beating him up decided to tell him just how it is to be a winner! You will love the rather poetic and funny lyrics. .....these bright white smilin teeth, you know, they aint my own. Mine rolled away like Chiclets on the streets of San Antoine and how his nose being broken so often that I might loose it when I sneeze! The song is full of such humour. The accompanying fast tempo music and the very effective change of music key add to the success of this song. Shes My Ever Loving Machine and the Mermaid are two other novelty songs in this collection. In the Hills of Shiloh and Paul, Stay Awhile and Rosalies Good Eats Cafý are nice ballads sung in the familiar Bares laid back style. After this albums success, Bobby Bare brought out some other good concept albums with the help of his now very close buddy, the late Shel. Hard Times Hungry is now available on CDs. Another very successful concept album is the one called Singing in the Kitchen which he did with his whole family. Shel again wrote most of the songs and I have received so many E-mails all over the world asking me where to get this other album!
