Alabama Album Review:
A listening delight for fans at 2006-04-27
Well, just play me some Mountain Music. Its been 25 years since Alabama signed its first record deal with RCA, and in celebration RCA/Legacy has released the three-disc box set Alabama: Livin Lovin Rockin Rollin: The 25th Anniversary Collection, covering the Alabama phenomenon.Unlike 2005s The Essential Alabama set, this collection cherry picks songs from across the years. Plenty of hits are to be had as well as eight previously unreleased tracks. The set comes with a detailed 52-page book with photos, band timeline, track annotations and an essay by Robert Oermann. This set tells about the bands legacy and gives you an understanding of why RIAA named them the Country Band of the Century. From the get go, disc 1 captures you with My Homes In Alabama (Live), Forty Hour Week (For A Livin), an anthem for millions of people, and a seven-plus minute medley of That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine/Suppertime/Teach Your Children/Dont It Make You Want To Go Home. This is followed by Mountain Music, which always gets my foot tapping.Disc 2 starts out with Feels So Right, a song that millions (me included) slow danced to many times in the 80s. A song that surprised me was Alabamas version of God Must Have Spent A Little More Time on You, with N Sync doing the harmony vocals. Though N Sync made the song famous, Alabama added real feeling to it. Granted, theyre different music genres, but its the quintessential Alabama that has been keeping it real all these years while Americas popular music tastes have varied widely from the artificial sounding 80s, the grunge 90s and whatever its called today.Disc 3 just keeps the good music rolling and finishes off with an interesting trio of songs, the story-telling Ripperly OTucke (Demo), the name dropping Hats Off and ending appropriately with The Fans.51 songs including almost two dozen number one songs, over half a dozen live/alternate versions, and eight previously unreleased tracks, Livin Lovin Rockin Rollin is worthy of anyones music collection. We hope you remember, we are just the boys in the band. And what keeps the fires aburnin, is always, you the fans. Many fans remember fondly all right. Alas, the bands retirement from the road wont keep fans from looking forward to more recordings.

Must Have at 2006-03-20
This Anniversary album is a must have for anyone who appreciates what country music is all about. The groups timeline and explanation of how each song on the album came to be is great. The pictures provided are awesome and help explain their roots in Ft. Payne, AL and what the Boys have accomplished. The mix of songs is great and a few that Id never heard before. If you dont have it, get it.Derek Kidd

Alabama Album Review:
A rich, career spanning box set at 2006-02-24
In celebration of 25 years since their signing to RCA, the newly formed RCA/Legacy has issued the groups first triple-disc set. In contrast to 2005s two-disc Essential set, this collection is more of a full band biography than a straightforward recitation of their chart hits. There are hits to be heard (including nearly two-dozen #1s, seventeen in their original studio incarnation, and a half-dozen in live or alternate versions), but theres also a good helping of cherry-picked album tracks, and eight previously unreleased sides. Together with the richly detailed 52-page book (which includes a lengthy essay by Robert Oermann, track annotations, a band timeline and a generous helping of rare photos), this is a lot more than a triple-CD set, its a package that tells the bands entire story, including their chronology, live performances, and, as mentioned, a good helping of their incredible string of hits.Over the course of their 22 years with RCA, Alabama defined what it was to be a successful country music band. In an industry dominated by star singers and their backing players, Alabama looked to both the 70s Southern rock experience (Allmans, et al.) and the twangy style of Nashville to forge a new country identity. Their electric guitars and drums are topped with pure country harmonies, and their songs (both originals and those picked up from others pens) were down-home. While the rock world was busy with the purposely artificial sounds of new wave throughout the 80s, Alabama kept the guitars and drums burning, particularly in their live performances, and turned out touching ballads with equal ease. Their 90s hits like Im in a Hurry (and Dont Know Why) are prime examples of how modern country could take in pop influences without becoming crossover mush, and latter-day top-20s like The Cheap Seats and Born Country are filled with warmth. Those looking to understand Alabamas chart dominance may be better served by last years two-disc set, but anyone who wants to learn (or relive) the bands whole story would be well-served by this new set. Longtime fans will enjoy the opportunity to recount select album tracks, listen to several well-known hits in live versions (and in the case of Face to Face, an alternate studio take), and hear unreleased items that include the one-off 1982 live medley of That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine / Suppertime / Teach Your Children / Dont It Make You Want to Go Home and the 1973 Randy Owen acoustic demo of Ripperly OTucke. Those who first heard these songs in their original release may find the lack of chronological ordering to be disconcerting, but overall the programming flows smoothly. This isnt the all-encompassing Alabama box set that will satiate everyones needs - there are far too many hits missing, or replaced by live versions to be definitive. But as a retelling of the rise and sustained artistry of country musics most successful band - the band that defined success as a country music group - its a winner. Alabama Album Review:
An outstanding compilation at 2005-07-14
Please note that this is a straight re-issue of a previous compilation (For the record - 41 number one hits) with a different title and packaging.41 number one hits (and theyve had a 42nd since then) on the American country charts is an impressive record by any standards. Theyve also had a lot of other hits which came close. One of my favorite Alabama songs, Pass it on down, peaked at number two, therefore didnt make this collection. Their debut single, My homes in Alabama, only peaked at number 16 and also misses out. Im not complaining really, but it would be nice to see another compilation - perhaps it could be called Not the number one hits (it would contain a lot of quality songs, and would be better than most Greatest hits collections). What you get here is three songs recorded especially for this album, one of which made number one when eventually released as singles, together with all those 41 hits. Alabama were always the champions of the blue collar workers, most clearly illustrated on Forty hour week, in which they pay tribute to all those who keep America going. Its a great song, but there are several others I like even better. One of my favorites, In pictures, is a cover of a song first recorded by Linda Davis. It is about being so busy working that you dont see much of your family except in pictures. Tennessee River, another of my favorites, was Alabamas first number one. Hank Williams Junior did a great cover of it for his Rowdy album, which is one of his best albums. My favorites also include Old flame, Feels so right, Mountain music, Song of the south and Hometown honeymoon - but most of the other songs are not far behind. Alabama wrote nearly all their own material, but they did occasionally record covers. Apart from In pictures, the only one to qualify for this collection is Touch me when were dancing, previously recorded by the Carpenters. This is a wonderful collection that may not appeal to the critics, but the fans love it, and its not difficult to see why.

Alabama Album Review:
Comprehensive, but butchered at 2005-07-09
How could a double-CD set of 42 #1 hits from the greatest country band ever possibly warrant anything less than 5 stars? The answer is by butchering half a dozen songs, especially some of the most popular.Heres a run-down of the butchering that Ive noticed:1. Removed from the beginning of Mountain Music the harmonica solo and the old man talking about climbing the mountain. Drum solo also removed.2. Removed the truck sounds from the start and finish of Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler).3. Cut the two fiddle solos from Dixieland Delight and the fadeout is much shorter, cutting off much of the chorus at the end.4. Cut the fiddle solo from If You Wanna Play in Texas.5. Almost two whole minutes stripped from the end of She and I.There may be more cuts, but these were the most obvious for me.This butchering of classics is unacceptable, especially for a career compilation. The reason, obviously, is so that RCA could fit three new songs in. Those three songs are quite good and enjoyable, but classic, beloved songs should never be compromised for the sake of execs making more money on a release. Shame on you, RCA. Im tempted to give this set only 3 stars for this reason, but this is Alabama, afterall.Ive just noticed that the Ultimate Alabama CD release contains the same cut versions. What gives, RCA? Have you no proper respect for music? The band should be ashamed of you.Aside from these cuts, this is an otherwise great CD set. As stated, this is a straight re-release of 98s For the Record set that was available until recently. Despite the age, all of the songs sound absolutely fantastic. Even the oldest songs sound clear and powerful. This is a very nice CD set with simply terrific music and audio quality, but know what youre buying. Some of the songs are not the versions that you know by heart and very likely will annoy picky fans. If, however, you arent picky, are new to Alabama, or have the un-cut versions of the affected songs, already, then this is a nice set thatll provide you with the essential hits of the greatest country band ever.

Not the ultimate collection but a great sampler at 2004-10-22
The ultimate Alabama collection is, of course, For the record 41 number one hits but not everybody wants to buy a double CD. This compilation addresses that situation by providing 20 of those number ones on a single CD. As they had so many number ones, there is bound to be some debate about track selection. My biggest disappointments were the omission of In pictures and Old flame, but overall I think the track selection is about right.Alabama were always the champions of the blue collar workers, most clearly illustrated on Forty hour week, in which they pay tribute to all those who keep America going. Its a great song, but there are several others I like even better. Tennessee River, one of my favorites, was Alabamas first number one. My favorites also include Feels so right, Song of the south and Mountain music - but most of the other songs are not far behind. This is a wonderful collection which may not appeal to the critics, but the fans love it, and its not difficult to see why. Nevertheless, I would still recommend the double CD instead of this if you can afford it.

Solid Alabama Primer at 2005-03-27
For casual country fans, Ultimate Alabama is a great starter. It features twenty number ones, though they had plenty more. Ill agree with another reviewer that the definitive hits package by Alabama is their double disc set, but for those of us who may not be able to or do not want to plunk down a nice hunk of change for the double set, this one will suffice. Also, if you arent a huge fan of Alabama, but want something representative of their work in your collection, I highly recommend this disc. Its Alabama, so just about anything they put on a disc will sound great. Personal highlights of this album include If Youre Gonna Play In Texas, Jukebox In My Mind, and Roll On. Everything else contained here is great.Once again, this is an excellent introduction for the casual country fan, but hardcore Alabama fans probably already have everything on this disc.Highly recommended.

Another repackaging but... at 2006-01-03
Ultimate Alabama is yet another greatest hits album from Alabama. However, its a very good starting point for a casual Alabama fan. This collection has had a great remastering job as well. I purchased this for my wife, and I could tell a big difference in sound quality versus older Alabama cds.

Alabama Album Review:
You can almost smell the cornbread cooking! at 2005-10-30
While I agree with other reviewers that this collection is a bit concise, I still think it is a phenomenal collection. Nearly all of my favorite Alabama songs are represented, and at least I dont have to switch CDs while Im driving to hear the other half of the collection. These songs hold so many fond memories - Alabama is one of those great bands that has it all - beautiful harmonies, catchy riffs, and lyrics that make you proud to be (or wish that you were) Southern! I put this CD on when I miss the south - my home - and instantly, songs like Down Home, Born Country, Mountain Music, and Tennessee River take me home. If you know Alabama, you know that no one can express the little nuances of the south quite the way they can. And when they start up with the fiddle - watch out! This CD has been in constant rotation as a driving CD, and I bought a copy for my dad last Christmas. It may not be the definitive Alabama collection, but its pretty dang good.Cassie

Not Live at 2005-12-10
The cd itself does not say live, BUT, it IS advertised that way and the copy I bought, did have the additional sticker on the front that DID advertise it as LIVE. Good collection from a great band, but if youre a fan, youve probably got every single song on here, and were disappointed that it was not indeed live... Pretty shady marketing... probably no fault of the group, but still deceptive....

Farewell Boys....youll be missed. at 2005-01-10
The title says it all. Its their Farewell Tour album. By producing this album they allow a different variety of songs on one album for their fans. If you didnt get to go to any of their shows on the Farewell Tour, then you wouldnt realize that the songs on this album are songs that they sung on this specific tour. Thats why the title says American Farewell Tour. Nowhere does its a live cd. Please stop your complaining and give my Boys the respect they deserve.

Alabama Album Review:

You are all wrong. It doesnt say it is a LIVE CD anywhere on the cd so why would you think it was LIVE. This isnt Alabamas fault. blame it on your teachers that were supposed to teach you to read. if you want to keep bashing the greatest country group ever then go ahead but they wont miss you bc you are not real fans.

Alabama Album Review:
A view from the other side of the fence at 2003-10-31
I first found out about this album a few weeks before it was released. I didnt really want to buy For The Record yet because it doesnt have two of my absolute favorite Alabama songs: Christmas In Dixie and one of the few songs that can bring a tear to my eye if Im homesick or in the right mood, My Homes In Alabama.I tell you, when I saw the track listing for American Farewell Tour, I nearly hit the ceiling. But then I thought about the albums title. I was about 99.99999% sure that it would be a live effort, but if it was all studio work then Id get it ASAP, I decided. When I found out that it IS the versions of the songs that Ive been hearing on the radio all my life, I was rolling on down the highway in my car. I was in a hurry and I knew why--it was to make one of my most eager purchases in recent memory.I couldnt imagine a much better single disc compilation of the boys from Ft. Payne. It packs in 20 songs, including ones that were recorded way back when their legend was just beginning to take form and a few of their most recent hits. There are #1 hits and not quite #1 hits alike, odes to past life and home towns, ballads, and everything in-between. Some songs you cant help but to sing along to, like Im In A Hurry (And Dont Know Why). In Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler), you can tell Alabama was having fun at the time with Randy Owens yelling that may give you a sense of their live performance style. And yes, of course, the majority of THE most essential Alabama hits are here too, such as Mountain Music, Tennessee River, Song Of The South, and one of my favorite songs of all time: Love In The First Degree.I can see where fans would be disappointed that this isnt a live effort, especially with the millions of compilations that Alabama has put out. But Im not one of them. Ive never been much of a fan of live albums at all. American Farewell Tour made my wish come true. It includes both old and new, most of the essentials, and the two songs that I wanted on one disc. There are only two compilations from Alabama that Ive seen that I would give five stars to, and this is one of them. If you purchase any Alabama compilation apart from For The Record, this one should be it!Ive always had pride that I live in the same state that the most successful country group in history comes from, and now I smile with pride and say that I own American Farewell Tour. It serves as an excellent remembrance of an unforgettable group from the Heart of Dixie that made some classic music that will live on forever in the memories of their fans.

I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE THINKING OF RCA. FOR THE RECORD IS NUMBER ONE BECAUSE IT IS LIVE ALABAMA. IT IS NOT THE BOYS FAULT THAT THIS HAPPENED. SOMEHOW, ALABAMA NEEDS TO REACH OUT TO THE FANS WITH A LIVE TV, CD OR DVD. THIS TOUR WAS HANDLED TOTALLY BY RCA. THEY SHOULD HAVE NOT STARTED THE CONCERTS AT 8:00 SINCE THEY HAVE SO MUCH MUSIC. THEY NEED TO MAKE THIS RIGHT FOR THE FANS.

Really In the Mood at 2003-02-19
When I saw the songs on this album, I said, if theyre calling it quits, why not make a bunch of new songs? I think thats exactly what they didnt wish to do, keep their success, not just fill up their Farewell album with Filler. The last new ones, In the Mood, a man coming home from work after an especially tough day, (we all know those) and The Living Years (I think this is a remake of an older song) seem to not be the tracks I foresaw as, the end. But from Track 3 to Track 20-something, theres nothing but good old hits, oldies for forever. God bless Alabama, whereever they Go!

Alabama Album Review:
Alot of the popular songs, but missing some of the classics. at 2003-02-26
Do you really need to hear the CD to review it? Well, its pretty obvious that a lot of these songs are collections of ones theyve done before. However, I think they kept it a little in the safe zone and didnt take any risks on songs that may not have been chart toppers but probably didnt get the airtime they deserved. I believe Burn Georgia Burn from the Feel So Right album (CD, whatever it was album back then) was one of the best love songs they have ever done, and its not even sung by Randy Owens. With that said, its Alabama so Id be kidding myself to give them anything lower than four stars.

Its sad to see Alabama retire but I guess after 20+ years they deserve it. In The Mood again is an Alabama classic despite that there are only two previously unreleased tracks on this awesome CD. Every song is a fantastic classic hit. This compilation was very well picked and all the songs are truely awesome love songs. If Alabama wanted to give us one final hoooraaahhhhhhhh! ---- then this is it and they went out with a bang! I would highly recommend this CD to any Alabama fan. All the awesome love songs together on a double CD. What more could we ask for as a grand finale? Happy retirement Alabama and thank you for all those years of beautiful music!

Alabama is probably the best known country band ever. This 3-CD collection is the most complete Ive come across. It spans over 20 years of their music since 1980. There are 50 songs in all including My Homes in Alabama, Tennessee River, Old Flame, She and I, Forevers as Far as Ill Go, Im in a Hurry, and Jukebox in My Mind just to name a few. This collection from Australia is high quality and is a must for all fans of Alabama.

Best Compilation Available...still missing some key songs at 2003-07-19
This is the most comprehensive compilation by this band currently available in one set, but even though there are extra tracks featured here that arent part of the For The Record set, there are some blatant omissions that should be mentioned: no Love In The First Degree, Closer You Get, 40 Hour Week, Then Again, or Once Upon A Lifetime. These are all on the For The Record set. Any fan will probably find tracks that seem to be missing from both sets such as Angels Among Us, God Mustve Spent, Maker Said Take Her, TLC ASAP, Take A Little Trip, and Cheap Seats. These are also pretty well known tracks that youll have to buy other records to obtain. Hence, there still isnt one complete set that covers all the bases. There needs to be a box set that has all the singles plus some bonus stuff for collectors as well...

Alabama Album Review:
Best Retrospective Available at 2003-03-13
Having hit number one for the first time in 1980 with Tennessee River, Alabama (lead singer and rhythm guitarist Randy Owen, bass player Teddy Gentry, multi-instrumentalist Jeff Cook, and drummer Mark Herndon) ranks as the longest lasting hit maker in current country music. They are also the most successful group/band in country music history with forty-two recordings that made it to number one on the Billboard and/or Radio and Records country charts. . Alabama is an appropriate name for this band. Aside from being the birthplace and present home of Owen, Gentry, and Cook, its deep south locale serves as the inspiration for many of their biggest hits. The southern-rock influenced, fiddle-featured sounds of Tennessee River are revisited with Mountain Music, If Youre Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle In The Band) and Dixieland Delight. Less boisterous, but just as full of southern pride are the rural-based hits Song of the South, High Cotton, Down Home, and Born Country. Another theme important to the band is the commitment to lasting love and fidelity with hits like Feels So Right, Theres No Way, When We Make Love, and Forevers As Far As Ill Go (they steer clear of songs that detail cheating and sinning). They salute (SA-LUTE!) the values of the working man as well, most notably with Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler) and Forty Hour Week (For a Livin). But dont try to pigeon- hole Alabama into a few musical themes or styles; these guys have proven to be just as adept at honkytonkers (Jukebox In My Mind), thoughtful meditations (Close Enough To Perfect), sophisticated pop-rockers (Here We Are), and amusing domestic depictions (She and I). In short, Alabama can do it all - and better than most. The newer tracks on this set hold their own quite impressively next to the previous number one hits. Five OClock 500 provides a rowdy and humorous tribute to the exhilaration of rushing home from work. Keepin Up offers another uptempo work-related tale, albeit a far more serious anthem for those who work their ... off just to maintain the status quo (and cant even think about getting ahead). It highlights Herndons crisp drumming and the groups smooth harmonies. Best of all is the single How Do You Fall In Love, a string-filled romantic ballad which showcases Randy Owens wearily expressive voice. The main difference between this collection and the two-disc For The Record is that it contains seven extra tracks, including the nostalgic gem Dancin, Shaggin On The Boulevard. Because of the extra tracks, this is THE Alabama set to get!

Alabama Album Review:
When It All Goes South - compliment, not cut at 2002-06-05
Alabama has done it again! When It All Goes South is fresh while remaining true to country music. Being a southerner, I can attest that going south is a compliment, not a derogatory remark. Alanna, you contradict yourself when you say, Alabama, a bar-band that went farther than it ever should have, ran out of creative juice long, long ago, after stating, [Alabama] racked up 42 No. 1 hits and 22 albums from 1980 to 2000.I think the music speaks for itself, and those who listen to it will agree. I am a MUSIC fan, not a country music fan, and I love this album. No one can do it like the boys in the band. Alabama, you will be missed!

ALABAMA STILL COMIN ON STRONG at 2002-05-16
The song When it all goes south, I dedicate to all the individuals who are fed up with the things our modern culture has dumped on us. Alabama has a humorous way of putting it, but if you listen to the song carefully, and read the words, you will get the underlying message. The rest of the songs are pretty good also. The reason Alabama has had so many hit songs can be summed up in a nutshell,GOOD MUSIC SELLS ITSELF!!

Loosen up and enjoy! at 2002-07-11
This is definitely one to enjoy. Its country, but it sure has a rock type drive which shouldnt offend country folk but bring in non-country fans too.The title cut says it all with great lyrics and great instrumental breaks. Btw, Im a Northerner, but a song like this makes me feel like a Southerner.Theres lots more to the album: Will You Marry Me should supplant From This Moment On as the supreme proposal song. And sure enough, theres a bit of the blues here in Reinvent the Wheel. This album runs the gamut from ____Kickin music to rending ballads. If you havent discovered the band, Alabama, yet, time for you to go South! g

Alabama Album Review:
Certainly a diverse album. at 2002-08-25
Alabama has been around for ages, though they have just agreed to call it quits. Honestly, its about time, but you have to admit that nobody could stay around this long in the music business unless they had talent...well ignore the Rolling Stones for now. This album pretty much covers it all. Will You Marry me, featuring Jann Arden, is pretty much was the title says. Love Remains, with Christopher Cross, is a powerful duet about love everlasting. The hip and edgy Simple As That follows similar lines. Down This Road is a ballad that reviews the past, while Reinvent the Wheel is a rocking number that looks toward the blandness of the future. When It All Goes South sings of the southern farm boy in us all, but Clear Across America tells of a woman brodcasting her break-up across all of the states. Wonderful Waste of Time is about heading somewhere tropical (or Carolina) and having fun, and I Write a Little tells of going off to war.Alabama is certainly a hit-worthy group. This album, however, does not hold many hit potentials. It is more for the dedicated Alabama fans, who will love the boys through thick and thin, and for those of us un-acquainted with the band, who want to get to know them a little better, without making a serioius commitment. If you like the singles Alabama has released, this is not necessarily for you. The songs here cover a wide range of topics and styles, never quite relinquishing that Alabama flavor. The south may never rise again, and neither may Alabama, but the group can still play. Sing it, boys!
The Closer You Get...

Alabama Album Review:
A must have for serious fans at 2006-05-13
For anyone that is seriously a fan of Alabama, this album again proves that the first 10 albums of Alabama are necessary to have a true and complete collection of the band. First, the full-length version of The Closer You Get is only available on this album. While The Closer You Get is not an Alabama original (originally recorded in 1980 by Exile as a pop hit), it remains one of their most classic and unique songs. Toe-tapping Dixieland Delight and the somber ballad Lady Down On Love also remain two of their most timeless hits. Songs like those prove how original the sound of Alabama was and still is today.Aside from those three songs, two other songs on the album that were never released as singles warrant special recognition. The first is their excellent remake of She Put The Sad In All His Songs, a song from the late 1970s that was covered by several artists including Ronnie Dunn of Brooks and Dunn fame. One of the finest songs on the album, it would have been a hit and could have been a classic had the song been extended with a long guitar solo and more generous string arrangement, but still was recrafted into a distinct song. Alabama Sky, sung by Teddy Gentry is far from an inferior song as well and could have easily been a single as well. While these recommendations may not impress the passive fan who remembers only their biggest songs, any serious fan or collector of Alabamas music should have this CD in their collection.

Pretty Good Stuff at 2002-09-29
Most of what Alabama has done is simply great, they are one of the best country music groups to hit the scene. While this one is good, it kind of lacks the punch that put them in the spotlight, rather, it shows the more slow ballad style rather than up tempo. My two favorite songs would be the title cut The Closer You Get, and Dixieland Delight. If you want a quiet evening to lie back, relax and listen, then this one will be what you need.

18 Great Songs by Alabama at 2003-12-31
This CD by Alabama features 18 excellent songs that they recorded in the pre-RCA days in the late 1970s. People who saw them in the 1970s at the Bowery in Myrtle Beach, SC will remember most of these songs which include Ill Go On Loving You, All American Woman, Loving You Is Killing Me, Hanging Up My Travelling Shoes, and I Wanna Be With You Tonight. The songs are great, but the quality of the CD leaves a lot to be desired. For true Alabama fans who dont have recordings of their early music, this is recommended, but be warned that the sound quality wont be very good. I give the content 5 stars, and the CD quality 2 stars, thus a 3 star rating.

A mellow album of mostly original songs at 2003-10-25
Although Alabama are well capable of rocking with the best of them, they chose not to on this collection of Christmas music. The tempo picks up on Rocking around the Christmas tree (a cover of the Brenda Lee classic) and Hanging round the mistletoe (more recently covered by Brooks and Dunn) but they do not go full throttle even on those songs. So this is one of those Christmas albums to play during quieter moments and it works very well on that level.Among the other songs, there are two old chestnuts - Little drummer boy and O little town of Bethlehem - on which Alabama sound exactly as you would expect them to sound. New tears eve 1999 is a track from their Twentieth century album. I dont think it was part of the album when it was first released in the nineties but it fits in well and Im glad that it was added as a bonus track. I was young once too is a great father and son song. The other songs are a mix of love ballads and spiritual songs and make for very enjoyable listening. This is another great collection of Christmas music from Alabama, though I think their first Christmas album was even better. At the prices quoted, both of them are a real bargain.

Fireworks! This CD has it all! at 2006-01-16
Of all the Live CDs out there. The top 3 favorites are #3. Bee Gees Live....#2. Jim Croce Live....#1. Alabama Live. One of the 80s/90s best (concert) country groups is Alabama. When these guys put on a concert you could feel the energy, heart and soul pouring out into the stands. This CD contains some of their best hits from their first two Greatest Hits CDs but, performed live. From the first song You Cant Keep A Good Man Down to the last My Homes In Alabama this one delivers! Although they could have included the song that pays tribute to us The Fans. Alabama Live is still worth listing to after all these years.

Alabama LIVE showcases the bands live energy and excitement. I especially like the extended versions of Tennessee River and My Homes in Alabama! I would recommend this CD to everyone interested in Alabama.

Alabama Album Review:
Plain and relaxable stress down country rock at 2006-04-19
Alabama has enough integrity to give you god ol` country rock. This is very simpel tunes, but right down to earth and the music fits in as quality earfillers here and there. Track 1 Take a little trip, is a good exampel of it. It put`s the melody right on the track. It`s a hummin song with it`s light and soft touch in every instrumental and vocal department. As a whole it sounds good. Track 2 Hometown Honeymoon with it`s walkalong rythm also breezes quality. Sometimes the theme spinns around and around, but as a whole is quite likeable all trough. Track 3 Once upon a liftime is a nice ballad, that drips quality touches here and there. Sometimes it can sounds too much over the top, when the strings set`s in,but the atmosphere is intact, and that lift`s it above average. Track 4 You can`t take the country out of me has a certain hillbilly touch and lesser rock and a certain banjo playing brings it more down to earth. Track 5 I`m in a hurry(and don`t know why) is anyway the winner on the CD. There`s a very uplifting atmosphere on the track that`s difficult to pinpoint out in words. You feel a hit song when it comes to you. The freeze in your backbone tells it all. Call it backbone reflex. Track 6 Richard Petty is a minor letdown. A ballad that doesn`t spark. Track 7 Homesick Fever is the funky one on the CD, and it`s quite rythmic and effective as a whole. Track 8 Between the two of them is a nice and carefull ballad. The melody line is quite beautiful and it has a nostalgic feel all over. Track 9 American Pride is the title track, but this one is a let down. A stream of cliches that doesn`t work as a whole. Track 10. Sometimes out of touch is nothing new. A ballad that`s below average. Yes, it`s out of touch so to speak. Track 11 Pictures and memories it`s in the old country feel style. And it works okei. Anyway this is plain and relaxable stress down country rock that`s most of the time is quite a joy to listen too.

Typical Alabama with many excellent songs at 2003-05-31
This album from 1992 yielded three country number one hits - Hometown honeymoon, Once upon a lifetime and Im in a hurry, all of which are included on their outstanding For the record compilation of number one hits - and a fourth country hit, Take a little trip, which didnt make it all the way to the top, but certainly deserved to.The album contains a well-balanced mix of upbeat songs and tender ballads. You cant take the country out of me is based on the well-established idea that you cant change somebody simply by taking them away from their roots. Homesick fever reaffirms Alabamas commitment to their roots. Between the two of them is a very moving tribute to a happily married couple who are no more for this world - although not clear from the lyrics, I think this may be about the parents of the songwriter. American pride is the kind of song you expect from the title - though this a good song, I think Lee Greenwood is the best singer of patriotic songs.Alabama recorded so many great original albums that its difficult to pick out favorites among them. Of course, if youre new to their music, you should begin with For the record (the best single-artist country compilation so far released by anybody) but if you are interested in collecting their original albums, this one is worthy of consideration.

I have been a loyal fan since I can remember, Alabama started out when I was about 1 year old and my parents are big fans as well. I have every album that is out and I have to say that I love this one, but it seems as though they keep getting more exciting. At present I am planning to have Will You Marry Me as a wedding song in January of 2002. I love their new album When it All Goes South. I cant wait to return to the states to see them in concert, as I am stationed overseas with the military. No matter where I am I always find a way to get their new CDs the day they come out. I Love you guys!!!!

Alabama Album Review:
A fitting end to the last millenium at 2003-02-16
So many people wrote them off a long time ago. Perhaps their record company had too, as Alabamas previous release to this was For the record, a double CD containing all 41 of their country number one hits at the time. It also contained three newly recorded tracks, one of which gave them a 42nd number one hit With this album, Alabama provided more proof that they were not yet finished. As I write this in the year of their farewell tour, perhaps the end is near, but that remains to be seen.On this album, all the songs are of a high quality but there are three songs that I particularly like. Small stuff, the first single, reminds you that little things can be very important. Write it in blue is about a relationship breaking down - the singer declares that if the woman cant say she is finished with him, she should write it down. The title track, perhaps more than any track here, demonstrates why I love Alabamas music. It captures the essence of the twentieth century in a four-minute song - I dont think the great country storyteller could have done any better. While others were singing about the perceived computer problems caused by the passing of 1999 (problems which never arose), Alabama used 1999 as a reason to celebrate the century, reminding us of just a few of the achievements.Alabamas basic style is the same as it always was, but the songs are all originals. There are no covers on this album, although they have proved their ability to do those on other albums. I have not heard all Alabamas original albums, but Ive heard a fair number of them. This is among the best of them.

First Commercial LP and Finest at 2006-05-13
Alabamas pre-fame material remains unfortunately mostly unavailable, and fans still await the reissue of the material of those three albums: Wild Country, Deuces Wild and Alabama No. 3. While those contained original recordings of several of their most famous hits, this first commercial LP sampled some of those songs and made them major hits. I Wanna Come Over, produced on MDJ Records, became their first Top 40 country hit in 1979 and was a major regional hit, notably in the Atlanta area. My Homes In Alabama also followed on the same label, hitting the Top 20 the following year. While these issues were on smaller labels, the following two commercially produced singles Tennessee River and Why Lady Why both were instantly #1 hits and were included with those first two Top 40 country charting singles to complete a masterpiece of an album.Alabama should not be looked at as a singles artist in their earliest years. The first album is a masterpiece with the well-crafted ballads including Getting Over You and Keep On Dreamin, the second sung by Jeff Cook. Alabama also even tested the limits with disco-charged Get It While Its Hot and created a toe tapper with Hangin Up My Travelin Shoes. While not every song may be considered hit material, this first attempt and summary of the tough seven years that preceeded it is an essential part of any Alabama collection and will not disappoint.

My Homes In Alabama by Alabama is one of the best debut albums ever from any country artist. The first track, the title cut, and their first top 40 country hit, I Wanna Come Over, were originally released on MDJ records. The latter has a full length version on CD and its longer than the LP version. The other singles they released went to number one in Tennessee River and Why Lady Why. This was the start of something big for Alabama.

One of the Greatest Southern Bands at 2001-09-01
I had the pleasure of actually meeting some of the guys in Alabama at the Bowery in Myrtle Beach, SC in 1979. I was not a fan of country music, on the contrary, did not care for it at all, but was talked into going to listen to them. Now I am glad that I went, because I discovered a group that was destined to make it big. During one of their breaks, I wanted to tell them how good I thought they were so I went to the table where bassist Teddy Gentry was sitting. We chatted for a bit, discussed music and at the time, I was drumming in a band in West Virginia. I asked them where they were headed and he told me they were negotiating a recording contract. Without hesitation I told Teddy that Id give them a year and they would be the #1 band in the country. He smiled, thanked me for the vote of confidence and then went to finish another set. I handed him one of my bands business cards, wished him good luck and then enjoyed the rest of their music.I purchased from them, a vinyl album jacketed with a white cover and black pen and ink drawing entitled Alabama Band #3 which was recorded in an obscure Nashville studio, and I proceeded to wear it out. It contained those timeless classics they grew to be famous for, such as Why, Lady, Why?, Cant Forget About You and of course My Homes in Alabama. The guys in my band had never heard of them but when they listened to the music, they knew that Alabama would soon to be superstars. This CD is the debut release, and while a great CD in its own right, you really should hear the previous mentioned #3 album, it is Alabama in their pure state before corporate recording companies got hold of them. One cut on #3 that is missing is a song called Fantasy. It should have been included but was apparently replaced by other songs. My Homes in Alabama is the start to a really great collection of this fantastic band.

AT EVENING, SITTING NEXT TO THE FIRE, PLAYING MY GUITAR AND SINGING SONGS TO THE LADY SITTING NEXT TO ME. ALL SONGS ARE GREAT (WORTH BUYING) BESIDES GET IT WHILE ITS HOT. ITS NOT A BAD SONG, BUT IT DOESNT MATCH WITH THE OTHER SONGS ON THE ALBUM. PERFECT BALLADS - WHY LADY WHY, SOME OTHER PLACE, SOME OTHER TIME AND LITTLE FASTER CANT FORGET ABOUT YOU OR I WANNA COME OVER. OLD SOUND OF COUNTRY, GOOD GUITAR ON ALL OF THE SONGS. TIMELESS MUSIC - TO WHICH YOULL BE COMING BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN.

A non-fans appraisal at 2005-02-10
I like country, but Ill confess Ive never really been an Alabama fan. My wife however was a big enough fan to get this collection, so I decided to give it a 2nd listen. A band that hit the top of the country charts 41 times between 1977 and 2002 must be doing something right, right?Having given these 39 songs (2 of them of unreleased tracks so its not really fair to critique them as harshly..the band themselves had thought they werent up to snuff..) an honest second hearing, my opinion isnt shaken a whole lot. There are some great spots amid the collection, notably Tennessee River which is probably as close as the band ever flirted with southern rock on the charts, Mountain Music (which ironically doesnt have very much in common with the bluegrass it celebrates, save a VERY short fiddle solo...I think the gentleman who says they edited the songs for this collection is correct.), and If Youre Gonna Play in Texas (which tips its hats to traditional country. Again, the fiddle solo seems to have been shortchanged.) Close Enough to Perfect is a tender love song and Lady Down on Love focuses on loves end. Closer you Get and Reckless are uptempo Charmers. In Pictures is a look at divorce from the side of the non-custodial father. Its truly touching. But there are 2 big problems with this much Alabama in one place:1) It points out how little risk they took lyrically and musically. Workmanlike is a very apt description for their work. Over and over, you can hear how they worked a formula to get hits. Do one about faithful wives. Do one about being from the country and/or the South. Do one about hardworking folks. 2) You can see the downward spiral. Notice that Reckless and In Pictures are the only ones I gave high marks to on the 2nd disc. The others are 3 star material (solidly mediocre) and below. Its not that Alabama is downright bad..its only rarely that the material here really stinks. Its just bland..played back to back to back, its sometimes hard to tell which is which. Sadly, Alabamas lasting contribution to country music is probably going to be as part of the Urban Cowboy phenomenon that blurred the lines between country and pop.

Alabama is great. Edited versions of songs arent great. at 2004-10-09
When Alabama first came out, they were one of the few country acts to not only have a string of hit singles, but also have albums that you could listen and enjoy nearly every song. So many compilations have been issued featuring Alabamas best, but this is the first to encompass their entire career. Ive always enjoyed Alabama, especially their early releases. What I dont enjoy is buying a $25 CD set and getting cut-up edited versions of songs. For instance, half the fiddle solo is cut out of Dixieland Delight, the drum solo is cut out of Mountain Music and those are just a couple examples. I wish RCA would release a compilation featuring the versions that are on the original albums. Thats how I remember the songs, thats how I want to hear them today.

Simply put...Youre an idiot. Your review was insipid, dim-witted, and shouldnt be looked upon by anyone, much less be on the first page of this album reviews. A Music Fan from South Carolina wrote:These may have been hits at one time, but today they should be relegated to history. Many of the songs are uncomfortable mix of shmaltzy soft rock and country. A few gems of course (like Dixieland Delight) but probably not worth getting unless youre a diehard Alabama fan.

A great album from Alabama at 2004-02-13
With four country number one hits and another single that just missed the top, you might think that this would be one of Alabamas most highly-acclaimed albums, but no so. Still, it is one of my favorites of theirs. The title track reached number two on the country charts. It is about the state of the environment, an issue that some people are passionate about, but not enough to cause politicians to take action.Following that near miss, the remaining four singles (Here we are, Down home, Forevers as far as Ill go, Jukebox in my mind) all reached number one. If youre thinking of buying this album, youll be familiar with most or all of these very different songs. They were all included on the double CD For the record 41 number one hits, which Ive already reviewed. So the singles from the album proved to be very popular, at least with the radio stations, but the other tracks, mainly ballads, are also of a high quality, especially Moonlight lounge and Goodbye Kellys song. The tempo picks up on Until it happens to you (a song addressed to a former partner) and I aint got no business doing business today (first recorded by George Jones, but also recorded by Razzy Bailey). This is a far better album than some would have you believe. If you want to collect some of Alabamas original albums, this may not be the one to start with but it should be high on the list.

TOUCHING BALLAD GOODBYE (KELLYS SONG), GREATEST HITS VOL. 3S JUKEBOX IN MY MIND, STRONG MOONLIGHT LOUNGE. DEFINITELY NOT SO MANY SONGS ABOUT THE LOVE AS IN THEIR DIFFERENT ALBUMS (MY HOMES IN ALABAMA FOR EXAMPLE).

Pass It On Down at 1999-12-17
Though not a highly acclaimed album, it did feature five TOP 5 songs, including 3 number ones. Pass It On Down has an undying ring to it, a song that never gets old. Cover to cover, this is one of the best albums Alabama ever produced, with everything from the emotional Forevers As Far As Ill Go and Goodbye (Kellys Song), to the hard driving Moonlight Lounge and zippy Here We Are, written by Vince Gill. The harmonizing on this album is very reminiscent of the work put in on the former BMI Song of the Year Fallin Again. A wonderfully produced album, this is one of Alabamas finest works.

A Christmas Tradition at 2005-10-30
I think I echo the sentiments of other reviewers when I say that this album has been a Christmas tradition since I was a little girl. It was the first CD I bought when I moved away from home, because I knew I would need to listen to it before Christmas. These songs are simply amazing. There is a song on there for everyone - when I was younger, my favorites were Thistlehair the Christmas Bear and Happy Holidays. Now that Im grown, I relate to the more serious songs - Christmas Memories does indeed make me cry, and Tonight is Christmas - which I always assumed was about the impromptu cease-fire during World War I - has new relavence today, as many of our friends and family are overseas at war. This album is great for everyone in the family, and is a nice deviation from the same Christmas carols you hear during the rest of the season. I recommend putting this on while you decorate the tree - that was my familys tradition, and its certainly one I will be keeping.Merry Christmas :)

Bright and breezy album from the late nineties at 2004-04-16
The mood of this album is generally upbeat but there are some sad songs here too. The music is generally relaxed. By the time this album was recorded, Alabama were past their peak commercially but they continued to make great music as this album proves. The album opens with the title track, a breezy mid-tempo song that sets the mood of the album. Next comes Sad looking moon, a song that is more reflective than sad, which was the only number one country hit to come from the album. Among the other songs are covers of My girl (Temptations) and Hey baby (Bruce Channel), both of which were American number one pop hits for the original artists in the sixties. Other great songs include Of course Im alright (about a meeting with an ex-partner), Shes got that look in her eyes (about unfulfilled desire) and Is the magic still there? While this may not be the most essential album by Alabama, there is much to like about it. If you enjoy their music, this album should appeal to you.

Alabama Album Review:
Continuity at 2003-08-10
This album has what a lot of country albums dont have: continuity. The album is meant as a tribute to their days playing in Myrtle Beach, SC, and it comes off as their best 90s album. Of course, they would have been unable to put the album together by picking and choosing songs from Nashville songwriters, so they wrote the album themselves--except for 2 covers (My Girl and Hey Baby) and 2 songs by outside writers (Of Course Im Alright--an outstanding ballad--and Calling All Angels). Sad Lookin Moon, Is the Magic Still There, and Dancin, Shaggin on the Boulevard are all outstanding, and Shes Got That Look in Her Eyes is a classic. If youre new to Alabama, you may want their early 80s work to be your jumping off point, but Dancin on the Boulevard works well as an introduction, too.

This was the first Alabama album that I bought and it was and still is a great album. It has the hit single, Sad Lookin Moon on it, but all the songs are great. I also like Shes Got That Look In Her Eyes and Of Course Im Alright. At least 2 or more of the other songs should have been #1 hits in my opinion. This is a bigtime underrated album. If you buy it, you wont be disappointed whether youre an Alabama fan or not.

Alabama: the very best from their first decade at 2000-11-08
This CD contains 10 songs, most hits for Alabama from the early 80s. It showcases their best work from that era, even throwing in the single edit versions of My Homes In Alabama and Dixieland Delight, giving people who own the original albums something new! In addition, cuts like Theres No Way, The Closer You Get and Feels so Right leave no room for doubt that this is a must-own CD. It even includes a couple 90s hits, like the heartwrenching In Pictures. This spectacular and well-respected country group sings songs that tell stories, make you want to get up and dance, or just make you feel good, and Super Hits showcases a little bit of every kind of song these spectacular musicians perform. Your CD collection is not complete with Alabamas Super Hits, a must-own!

Angels Among Us (Program Music) at 2004-02-05
Song was used by a law enforcement agency at the close of their Medal of Valor ceremony. Very emotional evening for everyone. Many tears in the eyes of those in the audience. An excellent choice for an awards ceremony recognizing those who have saved lives.MC

Great song for sure! at 2003-12-24
Angels among us is a very great and powerful song that moves everyone, young and old. I have only heard this song recently, but just a little while after, I bought this c.d and loved it! The song has great lyrics that would touch a persons heart. Although my age is very different than those who listen to this song, personally, I love country music and cant get enough of this song! So over all, IM LOVING IT! Drew

Very powerful song at 2001-08-18
Angels Among Us in fact is a very uplifting song by Alabama. Matter of fact, the song was done in rememberance of Dale Earnhardt back in Feburary when he died.

Good country album at 2000-12-24
Alabama seem to have been around for ever. You just need to look at the number of albums they have, to see that. This album is very good, although I have to say that the chorus of the hit She aint no ordinary girl can be a bit annoying with its repetitiveness. But, that said, it also happens to be my 17 year old daughters favourite Alabama song...so I guess its horses for courses. The other hit song is the title track In Pictures, a lovely bittersweet song about a fathers love for the daughter he hardly sees due to divorce. This album is worth getting for that song alone, but for Alabama fans the whole albums a must have.

I hate country music, but I love this CD! at 1998-08-25
My friend gave this CD to me as a joke. But, I fell in love with it. Alabama sings like its not country, they harmonize and it makes for a swell sound. Good job boys.

I have never seen a collection of music this AWESOME. at 1998-10-29
The CD has all the greatest songs by Alabama. It would cost a fortune to find these songs on the original albums. The selection of songs put together is beyond outstanding.

Incomplete at 1999-07-22
Though this album contains too many ballads and too many lesser-known tracks, it is still Alabama, and you know and I know that Alabama can never be surpassed and they are the BEST country group in the world. Cant Keep a Good Man Down is the ultimate confidence song, Fire in the Night is the ultimate 80s song, and The Closer You Get is one of their best. Like I said, not too complete, but if youre gonna love Alabama, you gotta have this CD in hand!

Alabama Album Review:
Alabama. Some average songs, and some that kicks some more at 2006-01-24
Alabama give`s you some good rockin tonight songs, and other`s that just kick``s the surface a bit. But overall this Cd is a good treat. Track 1 Still goin` strong is not Alabama at their best, but more average. Then there is Track 2 TLCP ASAP, with a weird tittle. An ok listning, but nothing more. When Track 3 kick`s in as the ballad Kathy brought my guitar back today, the quality is up at least one level. It`has a relaxable atmosphere all trough the song, and has hot potensial as an example of the good old school of ballad tradition. Track 4 On this side of the moon is a letdown, and doesn`t take of in the right direction. It sound`s like you have heard it before. Anyway Track 5 Cheap Seats is a good old standard rocker, with gut`s and glory to kick up some sparks here and there, and set`s some qualty standard`s which some of the other tracks has problem to follow. Track 6 Reckless is also up there above average quality, with a catchin refrain. Track 7 That Feeling is an letdown which does`nt bring me that feeling, sorry to say. Track 8 This Love`s on Me bring back the standard in way, but not`s realy up there. Track 9 Clear Water Blues, has nothing to with Blues to do, and are the worst track on the whole Cd. Track 10. A better word for Love is in the same league, sorry to say. Track 11. Angel among us, is a ballad to, but is a big step in the right direction, but ballad`s are not Alabama`s strongest force when it come`s to good songwriting. Anyway as a hole this is very average, but has some song`s that kick`s in the right direction a little bit more tha average, Probably 3 1/2 star`s Cd.

Alabama Album Review:
Good early 90s country at 2004-01-18
This is one of the CDs I got for my 12th birthday, along with my first CD player, so Ill try to keep my review from being clouded by nostalgia. I think the album is solid from top to bottom: its a fair representation of Alabamas sound in the early 90s, with plenty of slick ballads and upbeat, uptempo songs. The best cuts are The Cheap Seats, Still Goin Strong (with a horn section!), That Feeling, and of course Reckless, the first single.2 points:1) Angels Among Us is a classic, but you should be aware that the version on this album is NOT the popular single version. The vocals here are slightly different. The popular vocal reprise version is on Greatest Hits Vol. III.2) The cover art is awesome. It seems like very few country albums (like Garths In Pieces) have any sort of theme as far as art direction goes, so its nice when an artist tries something unique.
