Al Green Album Review:
Zarquad! What A Hoopy Soundtrack! at 2005-06-02
Joby Talbots score for the film version of the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy is phenomenal. I mean, wow! Really incredibly phenomenal! I mean, you may think Danny Elfmans score to Spider-Man 2 was phenomenal, but thats just peanuts to this score! Okay, I may be exaggerrating a bit, but that should not distract from the fact that this is a great score for a wonderful film. Not only does the music work well with the film, but I would suggest it as a companion to other versions of the Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy you may come across. Try listening to it while reading one of the books, for instance. Or playing the text adventure from Infocom. Some notable points:The introduction about Dolphins, read by Stephen Fry, who of course played the voice of the Book in the film. And of course, the brassy, Broadway-style show-stopping musical number So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish which serves as a wonderfully ridiculous setpiece for the opening credits. The melody appears several times throughout the score, usually whenever Arthur or Trillian are thinking of Earth. It is also reprised as a slow, jazzy, lounge singery song during the first part of the closing credits. The cue from when the Vogons destroy the earth, which is appropriately tense and dramatic, and climaxes with a panicked-sounding string section playing imposibly high, abrubt notes, and ends abruptly as the earth is destroyed. To fans of the original radio and TV series, I say to you Dont Panic, because Bernie Leadons Journey of the Sorcerer (Which, for those of you that dont know, served as the theme to both the TV and radio series) is on the soundtrack with a faithful and reverent arrangement, complete with banjo. It is one of my favorite tracks on the album, and I listen to it along with the following track, which shares its name with the films title, and the title of one of the most wholly remarkable books in the universe: The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy. Another great track is the music for the whale that is suddenly called into existance over the planet of Magrathea. It is filled with unwarranted optimism, and pathos, and gives the scene the necessary emotional edge, which I think is something Douglas Adams himself would have enjoyed immensely, since he created the whale in response to cop shows where innocent bystanders are meaninglessly killed as a result of conflicts or car chases that they had nothing to do with, and the audience doesnt care about them since they were only on the screen for two seconds. So Douglas wanted to create a character who would only exist as a character for a very short time, but make him extremely sympathetic so the audience would feel actual emotion when he is killed. And it works, and has worked in every version of the Hitchhikers Guide Ive been exposed to.Another great track is Humas Hymn, which sounds so authentically like a church song that you could swear youd be able to find it in your churchs song book. (But you wont, so dont go looking for it.) As I understand it, most of the chorus singing the song consists not of professional singers, but of fans and other random people who happened to be walking by the church where the song was recorded, to give it that extra level of authenticity that other filmmakers probably wouldnt care about.Overall, this is a very evocative and wonderfully fantastic score. Mr. Talbot displays much originality, but at points seems to channel other great composers of SciFi movie music. I hear traces of John Williams scores for the Star Wars films and Superman the Movie, Jerry Goldsmiths Star Trek: The Motion Picture, James Horners Star Treks II and III, and even Nobuo Uematsus Final Fantasy soundtracks. Just listen to track 8 and youll see what I mean. Just so you know, there are three tracks that are not part of the score of the film. I suppose you could call them Pop tracks, but theyre not tracks that have been popular in the past 10 years, at least. Only one of them: Perry Comos Magic Moments was in the film, at least that I could tell. It was used as source music twice, once in the pub near the beginning, and once near the end. Thats all I can say about that without spoiling the movie for anyone who hasnt seen it. (And if you dont recognise the name of the song, its been used in several movies, so youve probably heard it before.) The other two songs are Betty Wrights Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah! and Al Greens Here I Am (Come And Take Me). While the inclusion of these songs on an otherwise orchestral soundtrack may seem odd, they definitely fit the film. Even if Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah! and Here I Am (Come And Take Me) dont appear in the film, you can imagine that theyd be the next songs to be cued on the jukebox in the pub near the beginning of the film, and so they help establish the mood for the scene. Some fans may be surprised or disappointed in the non-inclusion of Louis Armstrongs What A Wonderful World, but if you see the film, you will see that the scene during which that song played in the radio and TV series is not in the film. But no biggie, if they make a sequel (and theres no reason they shouldnt) perhaps that scene will make it in. Overall, Id say that this is a soundtrack that no fan of the Hitchhikers franchise should be without. So buy it now, before the earth is demolished to make a hyperspace bypass!

ah-HA ... Quite a pleasure, really. at 2006-03-04
.If you enjoyed the movie [and we will assume that you did since youre here] you will love this soundtrack! Its got Everything! Much of the work is orchestral. Some of it is techno. There are a couple of pop tune, and Perry Como [it works, trust me]. The Opening Theme So Long and Thanks for All the Fish is a gloriously funny show tune. It was funny on screen, but here you can pick out the lyrics. Its even more fun when you can sing along. Its got the theme from the original radio play Journey of the Sorcerer, banjo and all. [so did the movie]. Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is mellow enough to blow your mind.Humas Hymn about the Coming of the Great White Handkerchief is nothing more then Holy. The Planet Factory Floor is ...Well, its just plain Huge! And Stephen Fry rapping. Stephen Fry, Man!! Reginald Jeeves of Jeeves and Wooster fame! If you are familiar with Stephen Fry, then the absurdity of him rapping makes this even more fun to listen to. He does the last track called Reasons to Be Miserable (His Name is Marvin), and he pulls it off so well! Its enough to make you want this album!

A Pleasant Surprise at 2005-11-12
The Hitchhikers Guide movie, for all its stupendous obserdity, had a surprisingly good score that one doesnt usually find in a comedy. The silly tracks are in there too, and theyre just as entertaining as the more traditional stuff. I love the music that is emitted from the Guide; its digital tones sound like a cell phone (except way less annoying and way cooler). Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is really awesome; its like chilled Guide techno. The slower tracks are equally nice. Tea in Space, Love, The Whale, and Space are all so simple and very pretty. Then there are a few scores that are really big and just plain awesome. So Long and Thanks for All the Fish (and the intro about dophins) is so hysterical...I love how its all put together. The Journey of the Sorcerer is fantastic. The only thing thats different about this version from the film is the addition of drums, but its not a bad change at all. Planet Factory Floor is filled with such wonder and hugeness thats perfect for Magrathea. Its followed by the equally awesome Earth Mark II.The only thing I didnt like about this CD was the addition of Reasons to Be Miserable (His Name is Marvin). It was just....annoying and incredibly bad. But its at the end of the CD, so I just dont listen to it. Not a big problem. If youve seen the movie and enjoyed the music, this CD is definitely worth it. Who knew a comedy could have such epic music in it?

Thats It --- Im Voting for Beeblebrox! at 2005-11-03
By now, youve probably seen the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy movie in a theater, or at least on DVD (if not both.) Now check out the movies amazing soundtrack. The two major standouts of this album in my opinion are Journey of the Sorcerer and Vote Beeblebrox. Anyone whos more than a casual fan of Hitchhikers will immediately recognize Journey of the Sorcerer as the classic Hitchhikers theme by the Eagles played on both the radio and television versions and now the movie as well. This version is enhanced and sounds great. It was a treat hearing it at the theater and its awesome on this CD as well. Vote Beeblebrox --- I about died laughing when I heard this one. This is a sort of campaign song for Zaphod Beeblebrox that unfortunately never made it into the movie. Dont believe the rumors / dont believe the vicious lies it says, talking about how Zaphod isnt stupid. It continues in this vain with a hilarious spoken part from Zaphod saying that he yknow, just wants to say all the things that presidents say, yknow. Has to be heard to be believed.Following close behind these are definitely both versions of the wondrous So Long and Thanks for All the Fish. Personally, I prefer the second version, a sort of upbeat lounge number, but both are great. So long and thanks for all the fish / So sad that it should come to this / We tried to warn you all, but oh dear. This album also includes a couple of what I guess could called Golden Oldies --- Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah! and Here I Am (Come and Take Me). Of these two, I thought Shoo-Rah! Shoo-Rah! was definitely better and more fun.The bulk of the CD is the instrumental tracks from the film. Composed by Joby Talbot, these tend to suit the scenes they come from well. Enjoy some memories from the movie, or just enjoy listening to the music. Finally, one last thing to mention --- Reasons to be Miserable (His Name is Marvin). Performed by Stephen Fry, this is a redo of a song by Marvin himself. Wanna know what its like to be Marvin? In everything he has to do, he finds the world condemning / If he had his time again, hed rather be a lemming. Yep, that Marvins sure depressed (and depressing), but the song is fairly fun to listen to.

Great to hear him again at 2005-09-16

Everything really is okay at 2005-07-12
The Reverend Al Green - Everythings OK (Blue Note, 2005)Unlike other people, I enjoyed Rev. Als last comeback album, I Cant Stop, more than this one. The only problem that I had with that album was that a few songs sounded exactly like the title track. On this album, its even worse. A little variety in production would have made this a more enjoyable album. Als voice is still in tip-top shape but he does resort to screaming and wailing a little too much. The only song I really enjoyed was his remake of You Are So Beautiful. Ill probably have to listen to this album again to get a better feel for it but for now, Everythings OK is the most appropriate album title ever. -EJR

Disappointing... at 2005-10-30
I was thrilled with Als first soul album in almost 30 years (I cant stop), and I was happy to know that he and Willie had another new effort. Unfortunately (IMO), this CD is over-produced and way too slick. The songs are uneventful, and nothing really stands out. I havent listened to this CD since the first week I bought it. Sorry, I love Al and I have all of his music, and I hope he keeps recording, but hes capable of SO much better than this.

GREAT SOUL ALBUM at 2005-10-10
Al Green returns with one of the best soul albums I heard in a long time. His voice sounds like it is still the seventies and the music is beautiful. His version of You Are So Beautiful grips to me and Green makes it his own. Magic Road is a great song that has some funk in it. This is a true soul album done by the one and only Reverend Al Green. I cant wait till the next album because Im wanting more. Favorites include Everythings OK, You Are So Beautiful, Build Me Up, Nobody But You, Real Love, I Can Make Music, Be My Baby, Magic Road, I Wanna Hold You, and All The Time. Highly Highly Recommended.

R. Kellys Collaboration Would Help at 2005-10-09
This album is truer to Al Greens form than his last come back album I Cant Stop, but its still just okay. Maybe Al Green should collaborate with R. Kelly on some good music material. Not that Al needs to change his style, but R. Kelly is the master of writing soulful, gospel infused ballads. R. Kelly writes songs that reaches the heart and soul, the kind of songs that Al use to sing in the past. I think R. Kellys touch may be just what Al needs.

Box sets or Al Green collections just dont get any better at 2004-12-09
Al Green really deserved a box set like this for a long time. Hes had an unprecedented amount of hits and quality songs, even before he ventured into his Gammy winning gospel days. I could never find a greatest hits collection that had everything I wanted, so I ended up having to buy several and still fell short. I cannot think of another Box set that Ive seen that is as complete as this one.My only complaint is that they try to fit his songs into Sex, Love, Salvation and Soul. You couldnt really break all of his songs down like this, so they end up making odd pairings like God Is Standing By on the Sex disc. They should have done a better job at matching the themed discs or just not worried about naming them at all. But, the booklet is pretty extensive and the packaging is done really nicely. Even better is the quality of the recordings, which sound better than ever! This alone should be enough for the die-hard fan to get this.Nothing is missing from this collection; the songs are in their complete original form (no short single versions of Lets Stay Together or Beware). The only track I can remotely think of that Id like to be on here is Free At Last and Im sure huge Al Green fans might have one obscure favorite that dont show up here. But, it doesnt get better than this. If you enjoy Al Green and love soul music, making the big step now to get the box set is defiantly worth it. Even with all of his albums and greatest hits that I already have, this is STILL worth owning. For a fan of Al Green, soul music or any music this is an excellent gift.

Worth listening as frequently as your favorite book at 2006-05-11
I cannot well afford to get all of Al Greens Hi albums, however, this compilation helps me to grasp Hi sounds essence Groove and be simple, as well as Als seductive voice. It has a good design like your favorite book which you read so again and again that its jacket has worn out, and you can enjoy it like such. When you buy a new one, you should not misunderstand it as a used one. But one thing I dare to complain about the binding is its rubber holders which keep 4 CDs fastening tightly. For fear I should not break them down, I put CDs on the holders not so deeply.

Al Green Album Review:
WHERE`S FOR THE GOOD TIMES?? at 2006-05-09
The omission of For The Good Times fosters my belief that most people who ultimately decide the song titles on an R and B compilation or major Soul artist box set are unqualified to do so. A weaker cover version of a Rock hit is more important in their eyes which tells me those individuals are Rock music fans as opposed to Soul. How about one of these so-called big white bread companies FOR ONCE hiring the right person to pick which tracks should be on an R and B or major Soul artist compilation. As a LONG TIME veteran of R and B Radio for many years, I know what I`m talking about. For The Good Times was my MOST requested Al Green song in all the years on the air in several R and B radio outlets throughout the Southeast.

Scratched disks at 2006-03-24
I bought and had to return this box twice. In both, all the CDs were scratched. A factory defect? Quality control slippage? Or, as Im beginning to suspect, some genius at the record company had pushed to the extreme the idea of giving the box a feel of something old and well-worn? This is the case of the box package, with its false-old presentation of a shelf-worn book. Ok, why not. But to actually factory-scratch the disks to make them used - thats beyond me!A pity then, seeing that its a great and very comprehensive collection, not that far from a Complete Al Green on Hi.

Al Green Album Review:
An Unfairly Neglected Classic from Greens Greatest Years at 2005-06-28
Here you have the epitome of Memphis soul from its hands-down best singer, taken up a notch or two by Greens restless curiosity and willingness to embrace the less-travelled roads on the musical trail. Not unlike his neighbor Elvis Presley, Green regarded the entire panorama of American music to be his birthright and he claims it yet again on this wonderful album. I can still remember picking up my vinyl copy as a kid at the local Woolworths on Main Street and hearing the joyous opening grooves of Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy), the stunning original version of Take Me to the River, and the touching, curiously unsentimental look backward on School Days. Greens later move to the ministry and subsequent recording of (sadly, often less-than-brilliant) contemporary gospel leads many critics to draw a sharp line between his secular and spiritual periods as a recording artist, but this is a false distinction. True, its unlikely that these days Green will be found singing something like the bawdy, groupie-loving travelogue One Nite Stand found here, but the gorgeous God Blessed Our Love (just two tracks earlier!!) is as sacred a tune as youll find in his catalogue. Green makes it all sound perfectly appropriate sitting together on this recording. Dont deny yourself the chance to have your mind explored - youll be glad you did.

His best LP? at 2004-08-10
Al Greens classic soul now newly remastered (no extra tracks) on his masterpiece Call Me, sometimes known as Come Back Home. His voice is sinuous, like a watersnake, and creeps up and through every obstacle like beautiful roses gilding a trellis. It breaks like the surf and it rolls on like a glacier, it can do anything he wants it to do. And he chalks up this gift to God. Mournful, secular tunes like the heartbreaking Aint It Funny How Time Slips Away meld here with the desperation that finally turns to bliss in Jesus Is Waiting, so the contradictions of the gospel/R and B blend he pioneers all get resolved during the course of one LP. Some of the tracks are slightly extended past their natural stopping point, a 70s device pioneered by Isaac Hayes and others in the Stax/Volt stable, but if you like extended trills and groans and gasps ad infinitum, youll scream when Al Green wants you to because he is the man!

Al Greens best work at 2006-03-05
Al Green was the first great soul singer in the 70s. Plenty of releases until today; yet he failed to release a better album than this, with another one called I am still in love with you. These 2 albums stand apart from all the rest of his work. This album definitely sets the standard of what we call today Smooth Soul. If you are new to Al Greens work, this album next to I am still in love with you, are the ones. You will not regret it.

Minister of Soul... at 2005-04-20
I grew up on a steady diet of Al Green and I always said when I got my own place, I would never listen to an Al Green song, nor would I eat okra! Well at least, I kept to one of those promises I made myself! I refuse to eat okra but as far as Mr. Green, well hes down in my bone marrow, so I have no choice. Its amazing as much as I cried about Saturday morning house cleaning while listening to Al Green, it turns out that I have become my mother! I do exactly as she did...I wake up on Saturday mornings put on my Al Green and commence to cleaning my house, from top to bottom. The only difference is that its not an 8 track and I dont use Pine Sol or Ajax! Isnt it strange how we come full circle! Anyway..this is a classic collection of great soul music...treat yourself..bring in something new, or visit something tried and true! This CD contains great rare hits like Belle and Full of Fire, most compilations dont usually include those 2 tracks. Im glad they finally did a two disc set of his music...that has all the great radio hits and plenty of rare and off the beaten path tracks too! I love Al Green, and as much as I tried to get away from him, its amazing how I ended up happily with him, just like an old trusty blanket! Oh and this CD also has two of my all time favorite Al Green songs..,Livin For You, and You Ought To Be With Me. They could have added his version of Pretty Woman, but this set doesnt lack because it isnt here, just a personal choice of mine. Other classic rare cuts: Ive Never Found A Girl, and I Cant Get Next To You. Please, please, take my advice: Run...dont walk to purchase these classic gems! You will never regret the decision to add Mr. Soul Man himself in all his splendid glory to your music collection. He personifies Gritty Soul!

Have I been asleep? at 2006-07-24
Just seen him live in Brooklyn NY,which compelled me to go out and buy this timeless Jewel. The show was pretty awesome as well. Ive always heard the usual radio tracks and knew he was probably someone very special, musically, but after seeing him then picking up this double disk, I now realize that of course his voice is like silk but the bands music was just pure Brillance. As I listen to these timless great tracks its easy to get lost in either his voice, the words, the organ, the rhytym guitar, the horns or the Drums. It like their either all working or theirs a standout instrument, the Voice and the words are always their. Like in Im Still in love with you its possible to get lost in any one of these elementsbut what really stands out is the Drums, the way he sets the tempo, changes it then comes back to it,while everyone else comes in and out one at a time is just something to marvel at.an audiophiles dream, theirs just so much to listen to in this one track catching it once in a while on the radio could never do it justice, and Im sure you could say that about anyone of these 34 tracks, they each have something special about them and Al is always just right there, steady and smooth. In concert this past week his vocal was strong and steady and on few occasions while he was singing songs like Lets get Married and Simply Beautiful he looked like he took a short trip to that other place, the place few of us get to,while alive. He was still in total control of the voice, mic and the crowd. Its not just my Farthers music anymore. Im so glad hes still with us.

I almost fainted while reading one of the reviews and the reviewer (thank goodness only one) stated that this album could have used a little R. Kelly. OH H$%^ NO. It was good to hear that Al did not fall into the Ron Isley trap, even though I do enjoy some of his new stuff, and kept to his roots. There are a few songs on this album that are blah but the first 8 tracks are hitting, track 9 is decent, skip the last three songs. I would have rather had him cut some of the filler songs and extended the good stuff, old school style.Rainin In My Heart is a straight up classic in my opinion. And I could see any of the other first 8 tracks being considered classic depending on the tastes of the listener.

Al Green Album Review:
Pretty good, but dont expect the magic of the 70s stuff at 2005-03-15
This is not only a reunion of Green and his arranger--quite a few of the original session players and singers are on hand, too. And lets face it--30 years have had an effect on Al Greens voice. It doesnt have quite the same velvet quality as before, but its astonishing how much range and dexterity Greens voice has retained, particularly in the upper register. Similarly, his background singers sound a little grittier, not as silky smooth as before. Whats a little disappointing to me are the songwriting and arrangements. Gone are the subtlety and gently insinuating quality of hits like Lets Stay Together. The new songs and arrangements have a more aggressive, in-your-face quality, much more in sync with the new milleniums R and B. Sigh. On the other hand, there is more variety to the songs and arrangements than on Al Greens old albums. Actually, maybe it was wise to avoid slavish adherence to the old style. Why mess with perfection? Greens voice, as it stands, is better suited to the new material. Besides, why shouldnt musicians try new things? I guess its too much to expect the pure magic of the synchronicity between Green, the arranger, background singers, material, and session musicians 30 years later. But hey, it beats the hell out of most R and B these days and its pretty decent by any standard. Listen to the samples. If you like what you hear, go ahead and buy. Chances are wont be disappointed. Update 3/24/2005: After listening to I Cant Stop a few times, I feel a bit churlish giving it only three stars. On reflection, Id give it four stars. Really, this cd is better than it has any right to be. Excellent work by all concerned, its a pleasure in every way and only suffers in comparison to Greens immortal 70s work, which isnt a fair comparison at all.

Okay to Listen To at 2005-10-09
I Cant Stop is okay to listen to. I wanted to give five stars just because it is Al Green, but I gave four. My reasons are: Al doesnt sound relaxed and laid back enough, and those background singers sound kind of tacky. Als voice still sounds great, but he sounds like he is just not putting enough of his soul into his singing. Maybe hell sound better if he records another gospel album.

The Rev. Al Green is back!! Whether you liked his tunes in the 70s or heard/saw him when Ally McBeal was on FOX, Al Green is back and doing what he does best. Great R and B...true to its style. Its like a trip to Memphis, without the sweltering heat. This one is classic soul music (some call it booty music), put together by the masters of the trade. Put the kids to bed and put this CD in the player, who knows what will happen?

Get Back (to 1970) at 2005-04-13
Al Greens 2nd album, 1970s Green Is Blues is a nice mix of stylish covers and a couple originals. The Right Stuff label has reissued this Hi release with a 4 bonus tracks, remastering and doing a nice job technically with this release. Talk to Me has Greens swinging soul groove that is sure to set your hips in motion. Greens cover of Smoky Robinsons My Girl is a soft gentle rendition, then the horns come in to punch up the mix. The Letter is a slow smoker as Green milks his romantic longing. Greens funky James Brown-inspired Get Back Baby comes before his pulsing version of the Beatles Get Back. The original release ended with Gershwins Summertime that Green takes into a slow mellow stream as opposed to the popular Billy Stewart version from that same era. Of the bonus tracks, the Beatles I Want to Hold Your Hand becomes a churning soul kitchen of desire and Chuck Berrys Memphis, Tennessee is likewise a tad slower, stirred by some tasty lead guitar. Green Is Blues is a great soul CD that sounds good 35 years after its original release. Enjoy!

Green Day at 2003-06-06
No one can get into a song like Al Green. On Green Is Blues, his interpretations of songs like Get Back, The Letter, My Girl and Summertime strip them to their core and Rev. Green refills them in with his expressive and inventive voice. Other songs like One Woman, What Am I Gonna Do With Myself and Gotta Find A New World also show off his magnificent voice.

A Great Debut at 2004-03-29
Al Green had been on the scene for several years before he signed with Hi Records in 1970 and got to record his debut. Green Is Blues is an impressive set of covers, which also showcase Greens vocals as he varies up his styles far more than usual. The production is up tempo and well crafted, and the overall vibe here is breezy and fun.The lone dud is Get Back Baby, the only original song on the album, and a sequel to his underground hit Back Up Train. This version is less catchy, however the rest of the album is consistently solid and flows smoothly. Overall this is an essential 70s recording and a great glimpse of a different face of Al Green. The man always had a nice style back in the day and this is captured here perfectly. And while I dont appreciate record labels cluttering classic albums with left overs from the cutting room floor, I do appreciate the remastered sound. Check this album out for some of the Revs most awesome vocal performances.

Fans will dig it at 2003-03-09
A grittier side of Al, before the slinky Philly sound jelled. This sounds a bit like Al fronting the Stax house band -- how could that be bad? The covers are so-so, but overall, this is Al with some edge. Great remastered sound, and songs you probably havent heard. For Al Green fans, a refreshing taste of the emerging artist, just before the hit machine kicked in.

Al Green still in love with you at 2004-04-28
Al Green was on top form back in the early 70s, and after the hard edged fonk of Al Green Gets Next To You and the smooth but gritty stylings of Lets Stay Together (Both 1971), Al came back in 72 with this album, Im Still In Love With You.This might well be The Reverend Al at his absolute finest. An awesome collection of songs, with smooth yet gruff soulful stylings from Al and the rhythm and grooves consistently On Point. Al had a real unique sound all to himself and flexes it at will here, with every single song worthy of being a hit single. There are a lot of famous songs here but the real killer for my money has got to be Love and Hapiness. A pretty much perfect album from Al Greens awesome early 70s period.

I. absolutely. LOVE. this. album! In a word: masterpiece. It plays like a greatest hits collection; every song is awesome. The strings give the tracks lushness. The sound of real instruments, as opposed to drum machines, synthesizers, samples, and whatever other manufactured effects, gives the entire album authenticity. And I cant forget Als most prized instrument--his voice. Theres such sincerity. When he sings, you feel it.Again, every songs a winner, but if I had to choose a favorite it would have to be Simply Beautiful. And it is. If stranded on a deserted island with only one album, Id hope it would be this one.

this is his best at 2006-03-05
Al Green was the first great soul singer in the 70s. Plenty of releases until today; yet he failed to release a better album than this, with another one called call me. These 2 albums stand apart from all the rest of his work. This album definitely sets the standard of what we call today Smooth Soul. If you are new to Al Greens work, this album next to call me, are the ones. You will not regret it.

Al Green Album Review:
Soul has never been better! at 2006-06-08
I agree, why arent there more reviews of this album?Al Green is quite possibly the most underrated artist ever, soul music or otherwise. Though some might disagree, most of this is due to the fact that the 70s was extremely competitve music-wise. Whlie The Reverend is remembered, he is not remembered as fondly as Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass and Barry White. And that beloved is a shame.Still in Love with You is a complete album. The type of album that you can play straight through, in order, time after time. Each songs flows into the next creating the sense of a man giving a melodic testimony concerning his innermost feelings about love, life, longing, pain, sadness melancholy and redemption. Not a wasted note, sound or breath is to be found on the entire album.Of all of the instruments used in the making of this album, Als voice is the greatest of them. It can be heard best on Simply Beautiful. It is simple, controlled and seductive. He purposely teases with a falsetto thats as light as a feather yet as powerful as a tiger. All within his control at the same time. He sings as if hes whispering in his ladys ear - the moans at the end are potent enough to produce babies themselves. You cannot be a music fan or collector of any kind without owning this album. Masterpiece is an understatement..this is what the soul afterlife must be like.

Al Greens second album at 2004-03-29
Al Green always had his own nice and distinctive style back in the day. For his second album, 1970s Al Green Gets Next To You, he brings a flavour that might surprise a lot of people.Yes this album contains his awesome classic Tired Of Being Alone, but the other nine cuts here are of a hard edged fonk nature, with gritty vocals and dusty bass lines and riffs. the album kicks off with the heavy hitting Temptations cover I Cant Get Next To You, and also has a refreshing and quirky interpretation of Light My fire. My personal cut has to be the demented Taurus dedication Im A Ram which rides the craziest bass line. Overall the whole vibe of the album is some ole fashioned Rhythm and Blues with no small sprinkling of funk.Overall this is some essential 70s soul, and whilst I dont appreciate record labels cluttering albums with left overs (Takes away some of the albums punch), I do appreciate the remastering. A classic album.

I dont leave home without it .... ! at 2004-01-08
Do you like Al Green? Any other artists on Hi Records from that golden era of Willie Mitchell-produced music? Do you like the sounds of Stax Records? Like southern Soul or Funk or R and B?This is the album to get if:a) you wish Al Green didnt get into the mushy love songsb) you like the mushy stuff but want to hear the Reverend a bit more down-homeSomething that stands out to me on my all-time favourite Al Green album is the re-invention of songs: I Cant Get Next You is pretty far removed from the Temptations original , Driving Wheel isnt a Blues shuffle anymore, and did Jim Morrison have any idea of what could be done with Light My Fire?Regardless of whether each song is a cover, or one that Green wrote or co-wrote, each song is clearly his! Al Green plays around with the sounds of words and phrases, howls, whispers, preaches (and I still get chills when I hear that falsetto howl at the fade-out of I Cant Get Next to You!!).The Hi Records houseband are one of my all-time favourites, and they know just what to do here: simmer, sweat, have fun, provide that extra punch, or hold right back when needed.Buy the 2003 release from The Right Stuff/Capitol: its 24-bit digitally remastered (if that means anything to you), you get the original album plus 3 bonus tracks. Even if you own Listen to the Rarities, youre still one song short, as True Love has not been released on CD before.

Al Green Album Review:
Southern funk side of Green and the band at 2003-10-13
Al Green is one of the premier southern R and B singers and youve probably heard some of his stuff if youre reading this review. This album is strong because it shows off the blues/funk side of Al Green. Of course, Cant Get Next To You and Tired of Being Alone are strong, as they are also on the Greatest Hits CD. The playing of the band on some of the other album tracks makes this one worth picking up. Im a Ram is southern funk with the organ and the drums offering some breakbeat worthy stuff. Other tunes show off the fat pocket that gave Al Green the perfect context for his amazing talent. Light My Fire is a surprising choice to me, but it works real well, pretty much neglecting the verse so that Al can preach on the bridge. All these tunes are worth it, though. If you have a serious interest in R and B, you cant go wrong with this one after the albums Lets Stay Together and Still in Love with You.--SD

Al Green Album Review:
Being Green at 2003-06-06
Al Green Gets Next To You is another showcase for the amazing vocal talents of the Rev. Al Green. The album was his first commercial hit spurred on by the southern-fired r and b song Tired Of Being Alone. He slows down the Temptations I Cant Get Next To You into a bump and grind and he turns Light My Fire into a plea for spiritual fulfillment. He dips into a blues vein on Im A Ram and sermonizes on God Is Standing By. Are You Lonely For Me Baby is the standout track on the album as he tackles the Chuck Jackson song with a religious fervor.

Worth every bit of the hype/ Al Green is the King of 70s soul at 2006-06-11
Yep, thats right, I said it and he is! The first of Al Greens three masterpieces, Lets Stay Together finally captures Al Green at the peak of his raw yet so seductive extrodinarily elastic whisper of vocal power. His voice really stretches out on tracks like What Is This Feeling?(The La-La-La cadence at the break in the center will give you chills) Judy and of course the earthshattering How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. A song he took and completely erased the origins of.(He even brags about doing this in the liner notes, but hey like he says It aint bragging if you did it)The title track is not just a soul classic it is one of the essential landmarks in music history. A song so universal and meaningful, yet wonderfully simple it could be quoted as scripture.(it is in a way actually)The remastering is good but I cant compare it to anything because I dont have a previous edition or a turntable. This has been released in 180-gram audiophile vinyl so if you do have a turntable you probably wont even want to listen to the cd anymore. Lets Stay Together is an all time classic and is every bit as essential as any landmark recording made during the 70s and beyond. P.S. Im not crazy about the bonus tracks:o)

Al Green still The Don, album #3 at 2004-04-28
1971s Let Stay Together was Al Greens 3rd album on Hi Records (After two big hits Green Is Blues and Al Green Gets Next To You). Once again we find Green in smooth but still rugged mode, the title track has got to be one of the all time soul jams, but the rest of the album is just as smooth and well produced. The songs are carefully crafted throughout and the other highlight has to be the Bee Gees interpretation How Can You Mend A Broken Heart. Al Green was on top form back in the early 70s and this album is another fine example of his talents and cool, individual style.

Denmon Records from 1986 is the equal, at least, of this sorry edition. Why buy a remaster if you cant tell even a slight increase in quality compared to a version that was released 19 years ago. Even the liner notes are better in the older version.

Superb gospel music from Al Green at 2005-03-10
R and B legend Al Green also recorded some classic gospel music. This CD contains two of his best gospel albums. The first album on this CD, called Precious Lord, is one of my all-time favorite albums, for its spectacular joy, and truly uplifting music. Al Green is in a fantastic mood throughout the Precious Lord album, and the music is melodic and expertly performed. Ill Rise Again, the second album on this CD, also features some great music, especially: the cathartic and beautiful song Ocean Blue, the heartfelt Jesus is Coming (Back Again), and the genuinely moving I Close My Eyes and Smile. Al Green honors the Messiah Jesus with his sincere performances on both these albums.

Its a good thing Al Green came out commericial first because I never would have gotten this tape without thinking it was going to be as soulful as his in his world days. Als commercial arranger declined following him into the gospel world, citing no experience. So, Al uses the commercial arrangements for the old gospel favorites and it sounds insipid.

Not an average compilation or re-release at 2000-12-22
This replaces an lp called Love Ritual: Rare and Unreleased. The lp and cd both go back to the master tapes and bring back tracks that either failed to make it to albums or were changed drastically by Willie Mitchells production aesthetic. Love Ritual and Beware, for example, both made it to lp; however, Al Greens orgasmic chanting was silenced in Love Ritual (along with the addition of strings), and Beware was edited down from 15 minutes to 8. The result is astounding. Because of the stripped down nature of the 18 selections, you get to hear the band and you get t
