The Grazmatics's Bio:
The band has many musical influences from Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers to Cajun to Benny Goodman and Django Rheinhart, delivering pleasant and exciting surprises in their supercharged shows that feature the instrumental work, close harmony singing and fresh original material to round off a total Bluegrass experience. It is easy to catch this group at Artz' Rib House.
The Grazmatics formed in 1984 when they won First Place in the Kerrville Bluegrass Festival Band Contest. They appeared at that festival for its final five years and have gone on to appear at many other festivals, events and clubs, including The Old Settlers' Festival, Round Rock, The Kerrville Folk Festival, Kerrville, and more bluegrass and acoustic festivals throughout Texas. They have also made frequent live appearances on Austin radio and television stations.
The Grazmatics feature Michael Landshoot on guitar and lead vocals. Mike has played lead guitar for folks like Lyle Lovett, Hal Ketchum, and Robert Earl Keen Jr. He is a two-time prize winner in the Nacogdoches Flat Picking Contest and regularly makes the list of Top Ten Acoustic Guitarists in the Austin Chronicle Music Poll. He has written a number of songs in the Grazmatics repertoire and has recently had several of his songs recorded by Special Consensus.
Paul "Tex" Sweeney plays mandolin and is the driving rhythmic force behind the Grazmatics. He can be heard on recordings by Robert Earl Keen, Jr., Jimmy LaFave, Bad Livers, Butch Hancock, Sarah Elizabeth Campbell and the Austin Lounge Lizards. Paul is a two-time prize winner at the Kerrville Mandolin Competition, and has performed on Austin City Limits with both Robert Earl Keen, Jr. and Jimmy LaFave. Paul also performs regularly with Sarah Elizabeth Campbell.
Tom Ellis provides tenor vocals and plays bass. Tom is much in demand as a bass player, having performed with many top bluegrass acts including Peter Rowan, Laurie Lewis and Buddy Spicher. He is also one of the country's leading mandolin and banjo makers, having built custom instruments for Ricky Skaggs and Buck White. His recording credits include Nanci Griffith's There's a Light Beyond Those Woods.
Wayne Ross plays the hardest driving banjo around and has been performing in bluegrass bands in and around Austin for over a decade. He appears on several albums with the Leon Valley Bluegrass Band.
