Kim Wilson's Bio:

Even more than his "waist up" appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show+ the "sit down" segment of Elvis"s 1968 comeback special was by far his most powerful appearance on television. Proof that Elvis could still rock+ it was also only his third live performance since 1957. This seminal rock & roll moment+ with Elvis surrounded by Scotty Moore and DJ Fontana+ was actually two separate sessions taped two hours apart. The first session+ along with rehearsals+ appears on Memories: The `68 Comeback Special. However+ it"s always been the second session+ the 8 p.m. show+ unreleased in its entirety until the appearance now of Tiger Man+ that"s lived in popular legend as one of the great undiscovered treasures of his oeuvre. An again confident Elvis really cuts loose here+ launching into scorching versions of early classics. "That"s All Right+" "Heartbreak Hotel" (where he has to stop to catch his breath and remember the lyrics)+ and "Blue Suede Shoes" have all the fire that first made him such an arresting phenomenon. But it"s the title cut+ which was spliced into the TV special"s second showing in August 1969+ that is the showstopper. This disc instantly becomes one of the cornerstones of any Elvis collection. --Robert Baird

Lookin" for Trouble

Kim Wilson Album Editorial:
Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson plays a deeper and darker shade of blues when hes performing under his own name and ILookin for Trouble his first solo studio recording in six years successfully showcases an assortment of traditional styles all invigorated by Wilsons virtuoso harp work. Wilsons continuing evolution as a singer and songwriter (he had a hand in composing nine of the tunes) is impressive but his harmonica heroics such as on the echo-heavy midnight-blues rendition of Jimmy Rogerss Money Marble Chalk remain the primary attraction. With his working band--featuring yet another hot young guitar discovery in Troy Gonyea--behind him Wilson rolls through 14 songs mixing a bit of horn-powered jump blues some Memphis soul and a tasty slice of New Orleans (via Dave Bartholomews Hook Line Sinker) into his classic Chicago sensibilities. The title tune co-written with fiancée Amanda Taylor gets two takes (a straight-ahead shuffle and a harder-edged rock rendition) to bring the total to 15 tracks most of which have different approaches but all of which are unified by Wilsons Herculean harp work and experienced grasp of bedrock blues styles. Smokin" Joint
My Blues

Kim Wilson Album Editorial:
Back in the 1980s Kim Wilson was merely one member of the Fabulous Thunderbirds a quartet that was as much a showcase for its never-waste-a-note guitarist Jimmie Vaughan as it was for its lead singer and harmonica player. But the rest of the T-Birds exited during the early 90s and now the T-Birds are Wilson and anyone he hires for a particular album or tour. Their most recent studio outing with co-producers Steve Jordan and Danny Kortchmar leans toward their own backgrounds more than the scrappier blues of the past.p Happily Kim Wilsons 1997 solo album IMy Blues tilts the blues-rock formula decidedly in the opposite direction. The rhythm on this project--built around acoustic piano acoustic bass and a small drum kit--is light and swinging evoking the jazzy blues of pianists Roy Milton and Roosevelt Sykes more than the blues-rock of the T-Birds. The 15 songs feature two compositions apiece by Milton Sykes Little Walter and Wilson as well as blues standards by Jerry McCain Eddie Boyd and Sonny Boy Williamson. These understated performances revive a bygone era quite enjoyably but they lack the modern ambitions of the best Thunderbirds recordings. Geoffrey Himes
