Johnny Winter's Bio:

This 16-track anthology spans the first decade of albino Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter"s career+ especially the early (1969-"73) Columbia albums that built his legend. While some purists have groused at his often manic precision+ this collection makes a point of underscoring his impressive range as a musician. The fervent gospel-blues of "I"ll Drown in My Tears" showcases Winter"s vocal stylings (and is one of several tracks featuring brother and frequent sideman Edgar)+ then segues neatly into the spare+ acoustic heat of the dobro-"n"-flute rarity "Come On in My Kitchen." But the emphasis is on Winter"s showy rock star turns and the collaborations with his potent band (and fellow axeman Rick Derringer and his cohorts from the McCoys+ of "Hang on Sloopy" fame) on "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo+" "Still Alive and Well+" and forceful live workouts of "It"s My Own Fault" and "Mean Town Blues." His original+ late-"60s power trio is on display here+ too+ and that small+ formidable outfit can"t help but emphasize the debt that Stevie Ray Vaughan and many of his musical progeny owe Winter. Indeed+ Winters"s bassist in the trio was none other than Tommy Shannon+ who would enjoy another turn in the spotlight a decade later in Vaughan"s Double Trouble. If American electric blues is your gospel+ this collection should be one of its cornerstones of faith. --Jerry McCulley

Johnny Winter Album Editorial:
Texas guitar-slinger Johnny Winter bares some of his deepest roots on his first album of new recordings since 1998. In a rare turn on acoustic slide six-string he performs fellow Lone Star State legend Hop Wilsons That Wouldnt Satisfy with the sweet lovely simplicity of a street corner singer. Then Winter plugs in for Lazy Lesters stomping primal rocker Sugar Coated Love. But after years of health issues Winter whos 60 has lost the roaring vocal authority of his earlier albums and no longer takes dizzying solos at jet speed. Instead he makes all the notes of a tune like Lone Wolf count whether hes crafting a slide melody or literally howling. The Monkey Song a playfully sleazy double-entendre number proves his sense of humor is intact. And harmonica ace James Montgomery who recently joined Winters band provides perfect accompaniment to Winters vocal and guitar lines. Ex-Stevie Ray Vaughan keyboardist Reese Wynans also contributes to this overdue addition to Winters dynamic blues-rock legacy. Ted Drozdowski

Lone Star Shootout

Johnny Winter Album Editorial:
This compilation of live performances from 1960s-70s Texas blues megastar Johnny Winter offers topnotch examples of the bigger-than-life psychedelic blues rock of the period. The collection features 11 tracks many of them standards of the genre: Jumping Jack Flash Big Boss Man Spoonful. Unfortunately while the CD includes a fairly extensive bio of Winter it doesnt include recording dates or locations for these tracks possibly because in most cases theyre unknown. A couple of guest appearances are noted however: thats Jimmy Reed on Big Boss Man and Willie Dixon himself shows up for Spoonful. ILone Star Shootout is all in all a highly enjoyable collection for those who like their Texas blues served straight up with no wimpy lemon slices or dinky little umbrellas. Good stuff. Deluxe Edition

Johnny Winter Album Editorial:
Culled from three 1980s Alligator albums--ISerious Business IGuitar Slinger and IThird Degree/this deluxe edition finds Texas gun-slingin guitar wildman Johnny Winter coming at you hot nasty and gnarly on 14 strong cuts. Starting off with a blistering nod to Elmore James on Mojo Boogie Winter whips a slow shuffle into slide guitar frenzy and the dizzying blizzard of barbed-wire notes and flashy runs is just beginning. On Route 90 Master Mechanic and particularly Good Time Woman Winter mates raucous licks with gruff humorous vocals to sweaty roadhouse effect. On Third Degree and Its My Life Baby the tempos slow down enough for Winter to testify convincingly though the virtuosic guitar solos continue unabated featuring convoluted torrents of notes fired off at a bewildering pace. On Bad Girl Blues Winter displays his command of acoustic country-style slide playing and along with his throaty distinctive voice he proves as compelling as his more electric self. Wally Shoup

Johnny Winter Album Editorial:
1970 album from Columbia by the great blues/rock guitarist Winter with Rick Derringer Randy Hobbs Randy Z. Contains all 11 original tracks including the hit Rock Roll Hoochie Koo the original cover art. For over 30 years Johnny Winter has been a guitar hero without equal. Signing to Columbia records in 1969 Johnny immediately laid out the blueprint for his fresh take on classic blues a prime combination for the legions of fans just discovering the blues via the likes of Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton. Constantly shifting between simple country blues in the vein of Robert Johnson to all-out electric slide guitar blues-rock - Johnny has always been one of the most respected singers and guitar players in rock and the clear link between British blues-rock and American Southern rock (a la the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd.) Throughout the 70s and 80s Johnny was the unofficial torch-bearer for the blues championing and aiding the careers of his idols like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker. Sony.
