Wellspring, 2003, is the highly praised sophomore release from Caroline Herring. She again wows with intelligent and vivid songwriting. The album is a mix of folk and country, even a bit of bluegrass.
Wellspring includes Rich Brotherton on guitar and Kelly Willis doing background vocals.
Herring recently married and moved out of Austin because of her new husband's work location, but her Southern chops are still very evident in Wellspring. After being welcomed and celebrated as an outstanding new voice in the often crowded Austin music scene, Herring has new worlds to conquer, and Wellspring should be just what she needs to do it.
Twilight is the 2001 debut release of folk singer/songwriter Caroline Herring. (Read Randy's review of Twilight.) She took the Austin music scene by storm with the release, winning Best New Artist from the XLENT 2001 AMP Awards and Best New Artist from the Austin Music Awards.
In her biography Don Harvey of Citysearch says, ?American folk music has a beautiful new voice. Caroline Herring's debut CD, Twilight, showcases a remarkable new artist that transcends the boundaries between folk, classic country and bluegrass music. She engages the listener with timeless, spellbinding melodies. Herring weaves tales that evoke Southern themes?tapping the imagery of Faulkner and O'Connor with a gorgeous, soulful voice that is at times reminiscent of early Joan Baez. She possesses the rare ability to tackle oft-times weighty topics with simplicity and grace.?
On Twilight,Herring is backed by many of Austin's finest musicians, including producer/guitarist John Inmon, bluegrass legend Peter Rowan, Lloyd Maines, Paul Glasse, Eamon McLoughlin and Bryn & Billy Bright.
Herring is from Mississippi. She came to Austin to complete a Ph.D. at the University of Texas. She's moved into the Austin music scene with a weekly happy hour at Stubb's BBQ and has performed with Tish Hinojosa and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Her schedule includes festivals and club dates all around the country.
