Austin Symphonic Band's Bio:

Austin Symphonic Band doesn't generally perform serious classical music. It plays music written for concert bands such as suites from musicals or films, marches, and favorites such as Leonard Bernstein.

The band is a true democratic, grassroots group of nonprofessional musicians who play for the love of it. There are:

No auditions No permanent seat assignments or "principal" musicians No professional musicians The members are listed the Austin Symphonic Band website with their "real" occupations. It's a fascinating collection of people, including physicians, visionaries and auto technicians.

Richard Floyd has been Musical Director and Conductor since 1985. In his "real" job, he is State Director of Music Activities for the University Interscholastic League at the University of Texas at Austin.

The Band's busy schedule includes a Parks Concert Series of various free music events in Zilker Park. Other events are held in Bates Recital Hall, Reagan High School Performing Arts Center, and other locations. They have a policy of open rehearsals. Rehearsals are generally held from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Connally High School's Band Hall each Tuesday night.
