Alabama's Bio:

While their success has long been celebrated since their first No. 1 singles in 1980+ Alabama"s influence tends to be ignored. The quartet"s sustained success opened doors for bands from Exile+ Shenandoah+ and Confederate Railroad to Diamond Rio. Commemorating the end of their active touring career was occasion for this+ their 24th album+ which is not a garden-variety "greatest hits" package. This compilation reflects their more romantic side+ beginning with 1981"s "Feels So Right+" their 1983 hit cover of Rita Coolidge"s pop hit "The Closer You Get+" and the Carpenters" "Touch Me When We"re Dancing" (1986). Mixing original material with quality songs from+ among others+ Mike Reid and Ronnie Rogers allowed them to maintain their momentum. Two recent recordings+ "In the Mood" and "The Living Years+" bring the collection full circle. Their ability to sustain this softer side so strongly and consistently+ even as they galvanized fans with catchy+ upbeat singles like "Mountain Music+" reflects a legacy that will resonate for the foreseeable future. --Rich Kienzle

When It All Goes South

Alabama Album Editorial:
Having racked up 42 No. 1 hits and 22 albums from 1980 to 2000 the group Alabama declares its newest goal for 2001: To create a Grammy quality album according to their bio. Well folks IWhen It All Goes South strives mightily to be a contender but its such a lightweight it couldnt crawl into the ring. With the help of seven (!) producers Randy Owen and company do sound rejuvenated borrowing stylistic techniques from modern RB and updating their overall approach for the millennium. But Alabama a bar-band that went farther than it ever should have ran out of creative juice long long ago. And bringing in Jann Arden and Christopher Cross--rather odd-choice guests--doesnt do anything to reverse that. While the group occasionally works a decent rhythm song into the mix their lyrics seldom rise above empty platitudes. Want proof? Heres their new take on Dixie from the title song: Get yourself some rebel pride... One day the Souths gonna rise again. To be sure IWhen It All Goes South is aptly named. It has boys it has. Twentieth Century [ENHANCED CD]

Alabama Album Editorial:
Ironically being displaced from the bestseller lists by Garth and Shania has given these veteran mainstream hit-makers a new creative lease on life. While playing to a smaller postmultiplatinum niche they have made some of the best and most adventurous music of their two-decade career. Mind you theres little that Alabama do that somebody somewhere doesnt do better. This is true of lead singer Randy Owens masterful but often overly sentimental balladeering and of vocalist-guitarist Jeff Cooks frequent forays into RB-leaning beach music represented here by the punchy full-blown Muscle Shoals-style horn arrangement of the original Mist of Desire. That said Alabamas best efforts display an earnestness charm and wry down-home Igravitas and theres quite a bit of their best here. The heartbroken Write It Down in Blue and the hopeful blue-collar testimonial Small Stuff are both first rate. Ditto for the title tune which is the best goodbye to the century heard yet. Bob Allen

For the Record: 41 Number One Hits

Alabama Album Editorial:
Alabama epitomizes the term ipeoples band. Never a critics favorite the quartet from Fort Payne Alabama presents slick sentimental songs that unerringly catch the ear of fans yet mystify those who dont hear the appeal. This two-CD career retrospective which presents all 41 of the groups No. 1 hits underlines just how successful theyve been. The strengths are there: Randy Owens clear deep intimate vocals; the focus on accessible melodies and musical hooks; and the straightforward song sense that plainly celebrates love family and home with all the simplicity of homilies stitched into a framed kitchen doily. Some might argue about Alabamas artistic value but the bands 18-year track record offers a convincing retort. Michael McCall
