A Tribe Called Quest's Bio:

Tribe"s last album--they announced their breakup just prior to its release--has all of the problems of <i>Midnight Marauders</i> and <i>Beats+ Rhymes+ and Life</i>: they"re just not <i>People"s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm</i> or <i>The Low End Theory</i>+ Tribe"s first two releases. That said+ so what? Late-era Tribe is still a force to be reckoned with+ even if it"s not as much fun or doesn"t have all the possibilities of Phife Dog+ Q-Tip+ and Ali Shaheed Muhammad"s early work. <i>The Love Movement</i>"s backing tracks recall previous releases but tend to be subtler--and therefore less than memorable--and a few of the tracks here are almost indistinguishable from one another. Q-Tip and Phife Dog bust out with few catch phrases (the exception is "Give Me+" on which they rhyme "Boyz II Men+ ABC+ BBD--naw+ we ain"t none of them"); overall+ they sound more mature than ever before. Are they really? At times+ yes+ and it seems that maturity is one of hip-hop"s few unforgivable sins. <i>--Randy Silver</i>

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
Comprehensive Anthology of the Group that Gave the World Q-tip Ali Shaheed Mohammed and Phife. Includes a Bonus CD of Remixes.

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
In their decade of existence A Tribe Called Quest werent raps biggest hit makers but their signature numbers indeed fill this CD with style eclecticism and laid-back but deliberate flow; indeed the groups stature seems to have grown since its 1998 breakup. The continued importance of their music and ideals for many hip-hop fans will only be enhanced by IAnthologys 18 tracks (Q-Tips recent hit Vivrant Thing from the iViolator album is a bonus track). Those unfamiliar with Tribes achievement should have their heads and booties set into motion by the fellas many moods from the playful Check the Rhime and I Left My Wallet in El Segundo to trenchant commentaries such as Description of a Fool and Sucka Nigga. And with its inclusion here the somewhat rare and all-the-way Iout If the Papes Come will doubtless reestablish itself as an underground favorite. Rickey Wright
The Love Movement

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
Collection of Remixes of Popular Tracks Not Available in the USA.

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
Its only because A Tribe Called Quests first two albums--iPeoples Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm and iThe Low End Theory/are so filled with great singles that the remixes on iRevised Quest for the Seasoned Traveller are essential listening. The songs are freed from the constraints of having to fit into the style of the rest of the album and Tribe open up the treasure chest: The Luck of Lucien gets a Deee-Lite-style disco beat; Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim) recasts I Left My Wallet in El Segundo with a tropical flavor; Public Enemy gets the dance-floor treatment; and Can I Kick It? is paid tribute with some funky new asides. Only the classic posse cut Scenario--which feels overcrowded by its newly dense soundscape--fails to improve with the added attention. Randy Silver

Beats&#43; Rhymes and Life

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
Tribes fourth album iBeats Rhymes and Life should be the awkward one the album on which the group growing up falters a little as it figures out what its going to do next. It isnt. Marked by a number of changes both internally (this is the album on which the Ummah production crew takes over and it also marks Q-Tips new religious faith) and externally (by 1996 Quests jazzy approach to hip-hop had fallen out of popular favor) iBeats finds Tribe taking it as it comes and handling all of the challenges with flair. Its a slower steadier album than either iPeoples Instinctive Travels or iThe Low End Theory but thats a description not a complaint; rather it gives you plenty of time to enjoy jams like 1nce Again. It doesnt hurt that Q-Tip and Phife Dog are feeling the flow here; an inspired pairing with distinctive voices and different strengths they trade verses with fluid grace. Randy Silver
Oh My God
Electric Relaxation
Midnight Marauders

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
This might have been the album Tribe Called Quest wanted to make from the very beginning. Its their most even consistent album of the original trilogy that also includes IPeoples Instinctive Travels... and IThe Low End Theory. But in spite of this or maybe because of it its also their most uninteresting. With so many competent tracks theres no chance for something to stand out above the pack like Scenario did on ILow End Theory or Can I Kick It did on IPeoples Instinctive Travels. The celebration is there (Stir It Up) the jazz drums kick (Oh My God) and the stand-up bass dribbles keeping perfect pace with Q-Tips unmistakable mic-touch (Electric Relaxation). Theres even a Native Tongues armistice/reunion with De La Soul (Awards Tour). Although it comes together like a seamless tutorial in jazz hip-hop style it comes together so damn well that its hard for any one track to excel cursing the album with consistent quality. Hot Sex
The Low End Theory

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
De La Soul are remembered as the premier Native Tongues posse those rappers who got low-key self-consciously thoughtful and jazzy in the face of gangstas hardcore threats. But A Tribe Called Quest may have been even stronger especially on their excellent second album the bass-thumping heavily jazz-sampled IThe Low End Theory. According to the opening Excursions rapper Q-Tips old man says the discs jazz-rap reminded him of bebop and Q calls himself prominent like Shakespeare. But if Charlie Parker had ever written poetic couplets and backed them with funky-drummer and Ron Carter-on-bass grooves this irresistible he might have been as big as the Bard and Brother James combined. David Cantwell
People&quot;s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm

A Tribe Called Quest Album Editorial:
iPeoples Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is quite simply one of the finest albums in hip-hop. Its easy to argue that A Tribe Called Quest reached their zenith on this their debut album: though they went on to produce another world-class disc (iThe Low End Theory) and broadened their palates and their consciousness never again were they quite this naturally free and easy. Q-Tip and Phifes delivery is deceptively simple flowing like wine and tasting like candy and Jairobi adds some contrast. The music so self-assured that it never raises its voice to make a spectacle follows suit. Four albums later on their last tour songs from iPaths of Rhythm still were at the top of the set list.
