Will Taylor Bio

Will Taylor plays viola, violin, and guitar. He composes, arranges and produces music. He is a unique figure in Austin music, with a style that is generally considered jazz, but includes swing, classical, pop, and just about anything else.

In 2005 Collaborations was released, with the proceeds benefiting CASA of Travis County, an organization that advocates for abused and neglected children. Collaborations features Shawn Colvin, Eliza Gilkyson, Patrice Pike, Ian Moore, Guy Forsyth, Ruthie Foster, Libby Kirkpatrick, Jimmy La Fave, Slaid Cleaves, Sara Hickman and Will Taylor and Strings Attached.

His Strings Attached Collaboration Series began as part of a project funded by the Austin Arts Commission that includes a composition contest for area K - 12 students and ten school performances entitled American Roots. The Will Taylor with Strings Attached album, released in 2001, includes work from that project and features collaborations with Sara Hickman, Barbara K, Ian Moore and Beth Ullman. There are many wonderful sound clips from the With Strings Attached project at stringsattached.org. The clips on MusicAustin feature Barbara K, Ian Moore, Sara Hickman and Beth Ullman.

The Strings Attached concerts have become a huge hit and have continued at St. David's Church for several seasons now with an array of talented guest performers. The concerts are, without a doubt, the best recurring musical event in Austin. The Live Volume One, released in 2004, features collaborations with Strings Attached and Eliza Gilkyson, Kellye Gray, Slaid Cleaves, Patrice Pike, Tucker Livingston, Tish Hinojosa, Jason McKenzie and Abra Moore. Live Volume One benefits CASA of Travis County.

He's played, recorded or produced with Ian Moore, 8 1/2 Souvenirs, Sara Hickman, Toni Price, Betty Elders, Maryann Price, Julie Burrell, Beth Ullman, Mitch Watkins, Rez Abassi, Nora York, Austin Klezmorim, Suzi Stern, James Polk and many others.

He's made solo albums, such as Live from Austin, his 1996 effort with the Jazz Menagerie. In 1999 he released a Christmas album called Peaceful Christmas. The Will Taylor Quartet/Trio has completed eight tours throughout US and Canada to date.

Simple Gifts in 1995 and Reel Life (1993) are two more Will Taylor solo albums. The Denver Post wrote, "Reel Life indicates that Taylor has crafted a quixotic blend of styles, just as Bela Fleck has on the banjo. Taylor takes the Hot Club of France concept into a contemporary sphere while never sacrificing the swing element."

The Austin Chronicle said, "There's no one else doing what he's doing and the chance to hear the rich sounds at the edge of jazz is something you'll wish you could wrap up and take home." Taylor's work earned him Arranger of the Year, Jazz Artist of the Year, Best Viola, Best Acoustic Jazz Group, and Composer of the Year from the Clarksville Jazz Players and Critics Poll.

Will Taylor Album Review:
This cd is violin rockin! at 2005-12-14
These songs are well-tailored interpretations of singer-songwriters original intentions. Will Taylors arrangements are characteristic of his guest artists personal styles. That is what makes the CD so entertaining to listen to, these arrangements are elaborative measures taken to already superb pieces. The result is a cross-genre awakening for anyone who thought they had heard every kind of music.
Will Taylor Album Review:
Kick Tooshie CD of the Year! at 2005-10-20
This CD is the best album that I have heard in a LONG time. Most of the music that is out now is mainstream garbage and this album gives you originality and new sound. Every song is good and you would really regret not buying this album, seriously. This CD is one that you can kick back and relax to, the perfect chill album. Listening to this album makes me feel like Im on vacation. Really, its that good. This is not one of those albums that you buy and only like one song and makes you feel like you wasted money. EVERY song is amazing. The sound quality is superb. This is live? I am blown away.
