Toni Price Bio

Toni Price's 2003 release of Born to be Blue is in keeping with the trend in her recent music that defies categorization. In fact, one could argue that there should be a new genre of music called "Toni Price." She explores a range of blues, R&B, rock, country, folk and sultry and swinging jazz.

Produced with Derek O?Brien, Born To Be Blue features guitarist James Burton and songs by Dr. John (a previously unrecorded number), Walter Hyatt, Oscar nominee Gwil Owen and even Mel Torme. Antone's Records bills it as a warm and intimate collection. Why, just looking at the cover gives me a warm and intimate feeling! Long-time fans will notice the missing sound of Champ Hood in Toni's band, but her current line-up is absolutely flawless.

Midnight Pumpkin, released in 2001, captures the magic of her live Tuesday night groove at the Continental Club to perfection. The songs span the decades and the music genres and features two songs by Austin singer/songwriter Shelley King and new numbers by Price's steadfast songwriting cohort, Gwil Owen. Playing and singing on Midnight Pumpkin are Roscoe Beck, James Burton, Jon Dee Graham, Dave Grisson, Ian McLagen, Malford Milligan, Derek O'Brien and Casper Rawls. There are swing tunes guaranteed to make you dance, low down, sad rumbles, soulful shouting and Blaze Foley's "Darlin." This is another genre-busting, eclectic tour-de-force from Toni Price.

Released in 1999, Toni's album Low Down and Up on Antone's records was a hit from day one. A reviewer from the Tennessean called it, "a slow dance romance in a balmy, Hill Country breeze." Low Down and Up lets listeners get a glimpse of a Toni Price not clearly seen before. The majority of the album is filled with the blue/country work associated with her, but she also comes on hot and sultry with a jazzy "Comes Love" and, on "Rusty Old Red River" she seems to have opened a vein and poured out her whole heart.

She recorded Sol Power at club in Texas's remote Alpine. The album is an acoustic live set from the Railroad Blues club - which musicians have long loved for its resonant wood construction - in the tiny town in Texas's picturesque southwestern desert lands. The big skies and wide open spaces inspired the band to, as Toni says, "take it to the limit."

Sol Power features Price and her totally acoustic stage band of three noted Austin players: Champ Hood (veteran of Uncle Walt's Band with the late Walter Hyatt) on acoustic guitar and fiddle, "Scrappy" Jud Newcomb (Loose Diamonds) on acoustic guitar, and Casper Rawls (LeRoi Brothers) on acoustic guitars.

"There we are," Toni says. "We're naked. It's our real thing. It's live. It's true. And it's beautiful."

Toni Price's first album, Swim Away, and her second album, Hey, received praise from both fans and critics. One reviewer commented that she comes on like Patsy Cline on a Harley. She's often compared with Bonnie Raitt, too. She's won numerous awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year (1994, 95, 96 & 97), Album of the Year (Hey) Song of the Year (Tumbleweed) and Blues Artist of the Year.

Gwil Owen, an old friend from Toni's Nashville days, has been a mainstay in her music. Owen has written half of Toni's recorded material. His songs are perfect for her voice and soulful delivery. Or maybe it's that her voice is perfect for his songs.

Toni fills the Continental Club every Tuesday evening with shoulder to shoulder fans, some of whom have seen her perform hundreds of times. Inside the dim regions of the Continental, surrounded by posters of herself and dozens of other blues greats, she takes a chair at center stage and sets off on a two hour excursion through rock, country, blues, mountain music, torch songs, and jazzy scat. Her popularity in Austin is a strong part of the foundation bearing Austin up as the live music capital of the world.

A gig at Antone's Blues Club at SXSW in 1989 brought Toni to Austin for the first time. Austin won her over immediately. "It wasn't until I came to Austin that I realized that I wasn't alone in the universe," she says. "I came to understand that I had compadres here - musicians, and audiences - people who wanted and needed real music. I'd been through all the styles, all the gymnastics, without realizing that I was really supposed to just go out and sing - sing songs that had meaning to me."

Toni Price has always approached her music on her own terms, refusing to go on tour, refusing to give up her cherished Tuesday night gig at the Continental Club, even refusing to stand up while she sings. Her casual and relaxed front porch style of delivery don't take any power from her bluesy vocals. In fact, she claims that sitting down to sing actually enhances her vocals because she can "really crunch."

Toni Price Album Review:
Fairweather Love at 2004-01-17
I want to live in a beautiful garden, I want to lie where flowers bloom, I want to sing what the birds are singing, I want to fly just like they do, Toni starts on a folky hippie tune complete with acoustic guitar on a track that is as gorgeous as it is retro. Toni throws Blue into jazz gear on the sweet shuffle Black and Blue Heart, It seems like I just give up, but maybe I aint very smart cause I keep on falling in love and breaking my poor old black and blue heart. You Dont Love Me turns back the clock to the 1940s with its Billie Holiday light jazz feel. The title track written by Mel Torme would be at home with the last call at the Starlight Lounge. Sad as It Seems is a country weeper. Blue River (not by Eric Andersen) is a perky bluegrass hoedown with Casper Rawls doing the back porch vocals. Theres Nothing But Heartache gives Tonis gorgeous voice a chance to float achingly around the melody on a sweet midtempo track, Theres nothing but heartache in loving you. Shelley Kings Tennessee Whiskey sounds like a reincarnation of Bobbie Gentry. Dr. Johns Clouds is given a great soulful reading with James Burtons loping guitar. My favorite track is the bluesy midtempo Rain Down Tears, When youre out there in this world alone, therell come a day when youll miss this happy home, she sings about a fair-weather love. Gwil Owens Not Coming Home has a lovely melody with the soft acoustic guitar backing Tonis aching vocal. Get the Hell Outta Dodge is pure Texas swing. The CD concludes with another slow Gwil Owens tune, One of These Lonely Days with the gorgeous Tosca String Quartet bringing it to climax. Theres no real addictive toe tapper like Thank You for the Love from Midnight Pumpkin on this set. Toni is taking her time. This is a great tear-in-your-beer set by one of our great female vocalists. Enjoy!

another knockout at 2003-10-22
Toni has released another gem, yall.Buy it, you wont be disappointed!I was lucky enough to attend the CD release party at the Continental Club in Austin last night, and the band was HOT...If you are ever in Austin on a Tuesday, dont miss Tonis show!

Toni Price Album Editorial:
Austin scene queen Prices sixth album is another enjoyable exercise in her signature hippie blues stylings a comfortable cross-pollination featuring country RB and a few jazz tinges. Prices imperfect but evocative voice is showcased in front of outstanding instrumental work especially from acoustic guitarists Rich Brotherton and Casper Rawls while legendary guitarist James Burton provides touches on nine of the 13 tracks. Strong songwriting from sources as diverse as Walter Hyatt (Get the Hell Outta Dodge) Dr. John (the previously unrecorded Clouds) Mel Torme (the title track) and longtime Price associate Gwil Owen gives the singer ample opportunity to work her relaxed wonders. The songs are short and to the point and Price and her sympathetic sidemen make each note and every well-turned phrase count. The album dedicated to the late multi-instrumentalist Champ Hood concludes with One of These Lonely Days an atypical but successful foray into an expanded sound featuring the Tosca String Quartet. Shakin the Tree at 2002-06-13
Midnight Pumpkin is one of the best sets youll hear. Toni Prices voice coaxes and teases you into submission. Surrender has never been so sweet. The CD blasts off with the flirtatious Start of Something Good. Larry Fulchers infectious bass line with Tonis alluring siren-like vocal make this classic. As if things couldnt get better, this is followed by my current #1 song, Thank You for the Love. I always hit the repeat button when it comes on. The cowbell percussion and how Tonis voice builds when she sings, It happens all the time are amazing. CLASSIC TRACK! Work On It rocks out. Toni has a more whispered vocal on the slower Something in the Water with a searing electric lead guitar. She goes retro to the 1940s with a soft shoe style on The Right Kind of Man. Call of My Heart is uptempo bluegrass; while Darlin slows the pace with gorgeous traditional bluegrass harmony vocals. The driving beat of Measure for Measure delivers, One foot in front of the other got us here. The soulful Joe Tex workout, I Want to Do Everything for You, has one of the tastiest instrumental breaks youre likely to hear. Fast finger work on guitar highlights the uptempo Who Needs Texas. J.J. Cales bouncy shuffle Like You Used To is contrasted with the rocker Keep This Love Alive with John Mills tasty sax. The CD concludes by turning the clock back again to 1942 with the happy upbeat We Just Couldnt Say Goodbye. Midnight Pumpkin is an exceptional disc because it opens with 2 killer tracks, shows great variety in song styles done equally well, and Toni Prices amazing presence which shines through vocally. She is one of the greats. Dont miss out.

Buy this immediately! at 2002-05-29
I live in Austin, TX and saw Toni Price perform live at the Continental Club for her weekly Hippy Hour performance yesterday, and, boy, was I blown away. Even though Ive lived in this city for 12 years, Id never seen her live until yesterday. Im kicking myself for all of her shows that Ive missed! Toni seems very down to earth and very sensual in her performances. And, she drank just about as much whisky on stage as I did beer in the audience. She seemed to be having a blast onstage. She has a way of making her fans feel welcome and at ease. And, then theres her voice. She has a beautiful, natural voice. Its hard to describe her music, which seems to me to be a blend of rockabilly and old time country with a heavy dose of the BLUES. Its pure ear candy that keeps you coming back for more. Shes a wonderful example of Austin music. No one should visit Austin without seeing her live. I only have 3 of her CDs (so far): Sol Power, Swim Away, and Midnight Pumpkin. To the Toni Price newbie, I would recommend getting your hands on either Swim Away or Midnight Pumpkin. My introduction to Toni Price was Swim Away because it was on sale at Waterloo Records (a fine establishment). I became addicted to listening to Toni Price after buying Swim Away. Of course, if you purchase her other CD, Sol Power, you will get a somewhat accurate picture of Toni live. In case anyones wondering what my musical tastes are to see if they jive with yours, I listen mostly to the Cowboy Junkies, Cassandra Wilson, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin (another great Austin singer), Tom Waits, Uncle Tupelo, Nick Drake, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Billy Holiday, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Van Morrison, Peter Gabriel, Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Buckley, Bob Schneider, you get the picture. Go out and buy all of her albums!!!!!!

After Toni Price won another batch of Best of Austin awards, I thought, whats the big deal? Id heard her compared to Bonnie Raitt enough that I was never interested in finding out for myself what the fuss was about. My eyes and ears have opened!, this record is a FIND. Buy it. Youll shake your head in wonder each time you play it. Its been in my CD player for a month. Toni is the singer youve been looking for all your life. Im planning a trip to Austin ASAP to catch her Hippie Hour at the Continental. I need to experience her in real life. What a gift she is.

Great voice and style at 2002-04-26
I love this album, its got a great group of songs (I love most of them and like all but one) and I could listen to Tonis voice forever. I dont know what genre of music this belongs in, all I know is this is good stuff. Highly recommended!

Toni Price Album Editorial:
Few singers respect and reward a song as well as Austins eclectic leading lady Toni Price. Her calm confident and inherently sensual voice never overpowers her material but instead seems to seduce the best out of the songs. IMidnight Pumpkin stylistically diverse yet musically unified by Prices personalized approach is her most fully realized recording. Every song is different and every song whether an uptempo tune like the tough-woman anthem Who Needs Tears or the gentle midnight ballad Something in the Water is a success. The songs ranging from a couple of esoteric jazz tunes from the early 1930s to the percussive Latin-flavored Work on It to J.J. Cales Like You Used To benefit greatly from superlative musicianship featuring intricate guitar interplay.p Guitar legend James Burton heard behind everyone from Elvis Presley to Gram Parsons is a very special guest on several songs but with Austin aces like Derek OBrien who coproduced with Price the late Champ Hood and David Grissom involved theres no shortage of guitar expertise and its all put to excellent use. Former Storyville frontman Malford Milligan a perennial poll winner as Austins best male vocalist joins Price for a fine and funky rendition of Joe Texs I Want to Do Everything for You to further diversify the music presented. The sax-powered soul of Keep This Love Alive on which John Mills blows up a storm and the addictive joys of Measure for Measure a radio-friendly gem that slots perfectly between the best efforts of Lucinda Williams and Sheryl Crow are also highlights. Prices Nashville roots show on songs like Call of My Heart which conjures a gospel and bluegrass mood with Burton on dobro Erik Hokkanen on mandolin and backup vocals by the Lustre Family. This concert show-stopper equally effective on disc segues smoothly into Darlin a simple acoustic old-style country tune that brings the Lustre Familys high and lonesome vocal harmony into the spotlight. Heart-felt renditions in a powerful, clear voice at 1998-09-12
Though a recording cannot deliver music as powerfully as live performance, Tonis Swim Away album comes as close as Ive heard. From the raucous Throw Me a Bone and Twelve Bar Blues to the plaintive title track, Toni delivers her heart and soul on a platter for anyone who listens. The words and the way this woman sings them is a rare treat!

Best in Person at 2002-02-25
Toni Price has been playing to packed houses at the Continental Club in Austin,Texas for years. If youve never heard her, you should. It may not match getting to see her in person in a smoke filled bar where the crowd stands to watch her and offers to buy her drinks, but if its the closest you can get to it, its worth it. Buy this album.

Sol POWER says it all. at 1998-07-21
The prior reviewer states the case precisely. If this is what is her typical performance, perhaps I should relocate to Austin. To support such wonderful singers as Toni, Sue Foley, LuAnn Barton, and Angela Strehli, there must be something special in the Austin water.

I Love This Album! at 1999-05-15
The first I ever heard of Toni Price was track 4, Like the Sun on a local radio station. That one cut made me want to buy the cd. On my first listen I was just luke warm with the exception of track 5, Freeway, which really got my attention. But after I gave it another listen, the spell was cast! This is such a great album. There are one or two that I like less than the others but its still worth five stars. I liked the album more each time I played it for the first 10 or 15 times, and now it is like an old friend. Please come to Omaha, Toni!

Music to live to at 1999-07-06
This is a tremendous live album (and, if you write to Toni, you can order the 4 song video shot at the club where the album was recorded). Not only is Toni in fine voice, but her awesome band of Champ, Scrappy Judd, and Casper fit every song perfectly. There are songs that will make you laugh and dance and make love and there are songs that will bend your heart back into place. One song, Whats It Take? is so soulful and candid that you know Buddy Holly wishes hed done it. Get this cd and tell AUSTIN CITY LIMITS to get Toni and her band a full hour.

Addiction is fun! at 2002-06-05
I first became aware of Toni Price through a piece I heard on NPR on my way to work (side note: Thank God for NPR! Death to Clear Channel!). I was immediately attracted to her lean, soulful voice. It has that sophisticated West Texas thing going, where a voice can express space and freedom without descending into a twang. Later, I checked the sound bites from this page, and hesitated before buying the album. Im very glad I went forward with the purchase. You need to relax and listen through the whole thing to really get it. The best thing I can say about this album is that it has resided almost full time in the CD player of my car since I got it. The second best is that not only do *I* love it, but so do my three kids (they are preteens, and NOT always receptive to anything as subtle as this music!). Try it. Youll like it.

SSSSH...........SHES A WELL KEPT SECRET at 2001-11-13
It never ceases to amaze me how much great talent there is in Austin that continues to fly under the radar screen. In this case its a girl named Toni who can belt it out with the best of em. This is Toni Prices second album, after her equally good debut Swim Away. If youre expecting this to be a country/folk album, well....your half right. The other half is well done Texas blues mixed with a little rock and roll. She is equally adept at both styles, which makes her a notch above most other women vocalists. And in the same league as somebody like Bonnie Raitt. Shes that good, and shes got a band of some of Austins finest musicians to back her up. The guitars of longtime Austin veterans Derek OBrien and David Grissom from Joe Elys band really give this cd a lot of bite. Price admits shes not a songwriter, but fortunatly she has an excellent songwriter, Gwil Owen, to handle those duties. When shes not cuttin her teeth on Owens material, shes doing some well chosen covers of songs like Bob Dylans Obviously 5 Believers (a great rocked up version). An excellent blues song with Harry Carters I Dont Want You. And her voice is just tailor made for Butch Hancocks country jewel Bluebird. The catchiest song on here is the folk/country diddy Something. This one I guarantee will have you hittin the repeat button. The album closes with Too Much Coffee. An ultra fast country rocker that sounds like its being played by a band that has just a little bit too much caffeine in the bloodstream. Price has trafficked in many styles of music here. And for me it all works well. You might call this Texas roots music. I just call it.... grrrreat!

Sure at 2002-06-28
Despite the cover that looks like an advertisement for a deodorant, this is a very good CD. There are not the blockbuster tracks like on Midnight Pumpkin, but this is a very good set. Dean and Brandy is driving outlaw rock, Two young kids gotta pay for what they did. Acoustic guitars blend beautifully on Something, I got a heart, but it just aint pumping; I gotta fill it up with something good. The title track is full of twangy guitars, I may be guilty of trying too hard; I didnt know it wasnt right. Edge of the Night is my favorite track on the CD, a rocker. Misty Moonlight is heart-of-Dixie country with fiddles and guitar pickin. Too Close to You is a great rocker with a searing electric lead guitar. Toni sounds like shes doing a cover of Elvis Heartbreak Hotel on I Dont Want You. Its 2 a.m. and this bar is closed; How did I get here? Heaven only knows, Toni sings on Boozy Blues. Fiddles give a bluegrass feel on the pensive folk tune Tumbleweed. Ms. Price does a pretty rendition of Butch Hancocks Bluebird. Toni goes through the subterranean paces on Dylans Obviously 5 Believers, a song not often covered. The CD concludes with a hoedown thatll put a smile on your face, Too Much Coffee. Tonis work here is sure and certain. Her band is top notch. Enjoy!
