He's the godfather of the West Texas country dance hall, the man who put a guitar in Joe Ely's hand and told him, "If you want women, you're gonna have to learn to play this," the man who founded the Cotton Club in Lubbock in the 40s and is still stealing wives today. This Texas troubadour is a cross between John Wayne and Timothy Leary, a good old country boy who wants everybody to learn how to dance so they can learn how to love.

His albums are a mixture of dance numbers, instrumentals for those inclined to sing along, and superb support from a band of players that include Tomas Ramirez, Ponty Bone, Alvin Crow, Texana Dames, and a dozen or so more great players. You might even find a photo or two of Tommy cutting up with the Texana Dames, since his wife and daughter are two of the three Texana Dames. Zen and the Art of the Texas Two-Step is a book Tommy Hancock wrote which purports to teach people how to dance with strangers in public places, namely honky tonks. There is a video and CD with the book, a triple whammy guaranteed to get even the most awkward up and dancing. The album True Stories and Strange Romances is full of naughty songs with various X ratings. Some songs rate only one X. Some are XXX rated! The tune "Born Again Zenner," a fox-trot, is XXX rated. However "The Outhouse of the the Rising son," a rock and roll number, rates only one X. This album was BAND in Austin because of its X ratings. The Austin Chronicle had an interesting story on the Hancock family. Read it here. |
