Suzi Stern Bio:

Vocalist Suzi Stern performs at jazz festivals and clubs around the world. She appears in Austin frequently at the Elephant Room. Doug Ramsey of Texas Monthly called her "the most polished scat singer in Texas." Her quintet was named among the best jazz bands in the 2001-2002 Austin Music Awards.

Stern has released three albums of her own. The latest is Lament. Her other releases are Seven Stars and Inside Stories.

A respected jazz educator, Suzi also makes time to present her innovative vocal workshops for both large and small groups. Inside Stories has received acclaim from such eminent composers and performers as Joe Henderson, Sheila Jordan, David Friesen, Red Mitchell, Jerry Hahn, David Shire, and Bobby McFerrin. She is a part of the Austin Jazz Workshop and appears on their 2000 album Take to the Sky.

Born in New York to professional musicians (her father was a violinist and her mother, a singer), Suzi studied dance at the American Ballet Theater and Joffrey for 15 years before turning to music full time in the late 1970's. Suzi studied classical voice for 10 years, but she was most influenced by her studies with jazz vocal wizard Bobby McFerrin. She also learned jazz theory and phrasing from her studies with jazz saxophonists Rob Lockart, Paul Ostermayer, and John Mills.

In 1997, Suzi was one of the winners of JAZZIZ Magazine's "Vocals on Fire" competition for Best New Vocalist.
