Whole New You, released in March 2001, features some laid back acoustic numbers. It reveals a Joni Mitchell-esque side of Shawn Colvin that is wonderful and charming. Her website has music clips and interesting goodies about the new album and Shawn. Photographer Rob McGee took this image of Shawn at Austin's A2K Millennium bash. Shawn was sick that night and proved herself to be a real trooper when she kept coming back to perform in spite of her illness. Fellow Austinite Kelly Willis was also on hand for the A2K party, and McGee got a good photo of her, too. Columbia Recording artist Shawn Colvin followed up her Grammy-winning platinum-certified A Few Small Repairs album with Holiday Songs & Lullabies, a collection of all-new recordings of seasonal holiday classics and traditional children's lullabies. It was released in October 1998 and was inspired by the birth of Shawn's daughter Caledonia Jean-Marie, born in July 1998. She recorded the album while she was eight and a half months pregnant. Guess she figured she'd be too busy for a while if she waited any longer! Cover Girl was Shawn's 1994 release and her tribute to the great artists whose songs she had enjoyed singing over the years. But she also writes songs and her albums of original work have been well received. She said, "As I've written more songs, I've found it's okay to just make a statement-just say it, get it out-that's probably most indicative of my growth," she explains. "I feel more trust in my feelings, less inclined to prove I know the craft, or to be clever, which is what you do when you first start out. Your job as a songwriter is to get next to the emotion with no pretension-and I think it's paying off for me now." She's grown tremendously since her first release in 1989 with Steady On. Fat City, a 1993 release, received two Grammy nominations. Shawn was born in Vermillion, South Dakota, but Austin is proud to claim her. Her father was a staunch folkie who passed his love for the Kingston Trio, Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte, Josh White and other musical icons on to his family. Shawn picked up her brother's Harmony 4-string tenor guitar at 10 years old and became a musician. Her journey has included country western, swing, and now pop, where she's had her greatest sucesses.
