SXIP Bio

Sxip is a performance artist, using spoken word and music created from instruments as diverse as industrial flute, paper clips, a board called "Stomp," mutant harmonica, double extended penny whistles and guitar. His pieces are percussive, rhythmic and absolutely unique.

Sxip performed with the PeACh (Performance Art Church) in Austin for an extended period of great creativity and some of his performances pieces were developed from that period. His first album is When Joy Destroys Sorrow. It contains everything from spoken word to wailing Klezmorim pieces.

For several months in about 1996, Sxip was unable to play his guitar or any instrument because of carpal tunnel injuries. He used the time as an opportunity to develop as a storyteller using puppets and to devise alternative ways of creating music and instruments. His "prepared guitar," for example, has paper clips festooned from the strings to create a sound like the chiming of bells. The industrial flute has an amplifier pick-up inside, and instead of blowing across the blow hole, Sxip might sing or scream into it, or slap it to create his audience-grabbing industrial music.

Sxip went on tour in 1999. In a Grayhouse bus. He would hit a new town, make a swift call on the radio and media, drop some CDs at the local music stores, and head back to the bus station in time to catch a ride to the next town, where he would do it all over again. It seems his creativity is powerful enough to overcome whatever obstacles life sends his way and still permit the prolific performance of the unexpected.
