Patrice Pike Bio

Patrice Pike started in Austin with a band called Little Sister, later known as Sister 7. Composed of lead vocalist Patrice Pike, with Wayne Sutton on guitar, Darrell Phillips on bass, and Sean Phillips on drums, this quartet saw the hard work as a notable road band come to fruition on their second Arista release Wrestling Over Tiny Matters. The quartet formed in the summer of '91 and at first were almost a self-described funk band, playing good-time music in weekly gigs at bars on Sixth Street.

Sister Seven's soulful and assured 1996 Arista Austin debut This The Trip generated the hit "Know What You Mean." Rolling Stone has said of Patrice, "She's Tina Tuner, Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin and Robert Plant rolled into a tiny but explosive package." Each member of the band is a powerful musician in his own right. The group has used its extensive time on the road to develop and mature as songwriters.

As they moved toward concentrating on songwriting, they tried to keep elements of that funk while evolving their overall sound. From the start their emphasis has been on the music.

The band began with the name Little Sister (Patrice's childhood nickname). By their first album, the self-titled Sister 7, the name had changed. According to their bio on Arista's site, "There were six bands in the United States and one in the UK with the word 'Sister' in the title," Patrice notes. "We were literally Sister Seven. Plus we liked the name because seven is a lucky number."

In 2001, Patrice Pike began singing with a group called Black Box Rebellion and Sister 7 has become a piece of history. Pike also does a considerable amount of solo performing. You can get music from Patrice Pike and Patrice Pike and the Black Box Rebellion at CDBaby.

Amazing album from an amazing talent! at 2004-07-06
I normally dont write reviews, but I wanted to tell anyone who is thinking about buying this album to do so immediately. You will not be disappointed! I have been listening to it for a year since I first saw her live and I havent stopped listening. She is an amazing talent, both as a singer and a songwriter. I keep waiting for her to make it really big so I can say I knew about her when and saw her live at all these small venues. But in the meantime, Ill enjoy this far too well kept of a secret and so will anyone who is smart enough to buy her albums or to see her live.

Youve got to see her live at 2003-10-30
I recently had the pleasure to see Patrice live in San Diego, then Northern California. She is an an amazing talent, plus human being. Fencing Under Fire is an amazing album. Patrice writes all of the songs on this album. The songs are many stories that she has experienced throughout her life journies. Every song on the album is worth listening to over and over. Dominiqe is a great mellow song that was based on a character from a book. Angels, probably the best track on the album.. Patrice stands alone a a unique singer songwriter. I highly reccomend anyone who purchases this album, to check her out live.

Cant stop playin it! at 2003-08-26
This CD hasnt come out of my car CD player since I got it from a friend. There isnt a song I dont like. The lyrics really move me, make me smile, make me think, etc. The guitar playing is smooth and clean and Patrices voice is amazingly versatile. I own over 1,000 different CDs in all genres, and this is at the top of my all time favorite list.

Cookin at 2003-02-27
With the breakup of Sister 7 and being dropped by Arista, Patrice formed Blackbox Rebellion and started her own record company. (Interesting fact: Patrice was a classmate of Erykah Badu.) The CD cooks on most tracks. Jackknife Girl is a sassy track with great punch. Ms. Ramona sounds like a renegade Patti Smith track from her heyday with a ripping electric lead guitar, At least Im living with a soul that rips the truth from heavens lining. Sweet November has a softer feel with a pretty melody, Oh wind, you blow me to my knees; Helpless rush of these memories. My favorite track that is riding high in my personal top ten is Me and Smooth. Its bubbly rhythm moves so fluidly that it almost percolates, punctuated by the expansive chorus, I could do everything, but without this love it would not mean a thing; so Im coming home. All My Love has a sassy swagger. The CD concludes with the eerie stateliness of Volcanoes. Although a couple tracks are slower and dont grab me as much, the high points here are ones not to miss. Cookin!

BUY THIS IMMEDIATELY at 2002-07-18
I just saw her live in Austin, and her show is absolutely amazing. I plan on seeing her as many times as possible. It is a great album, I love every song (Which is quite rare for my picky tastes). But it immediately, and if you live in Texas look out for her, she is sooooooo amazing.
