Monte Montgomery Bio

Guitar virtuoso Monte Montgomery released Wishing Well in 2001. The album provides many opportunities for listeners to enjoy his great guitar playing, with strong vocals and solid songs.

Montgomery's bluesy-pop Mirror, his second release, includes Austin guests Abra Moore, Lloyd Maines and Steven Bruton. The CD includes a movie of part of his live performance on Austin City Limits and spotlights one of his amazing guitar solos.

Monte appeared on Austin City Limits in April and May of 1999, a career boost that may make him as well known nationally as he is in Austin. He won best acoustic guitarist at the 1998 and 1999 Austin Music Awards. San Antonio Magazine inducted him into the Musicians Hall of Fame in 1998.

The review of his act by Austin City Limits said, "Monte Montgomery blows people away. There is no other way to describe it... Like Michael Jordan defying the impossible with an air-filled leather ball on the hardwood, Montgomery makes his strings produce sounds that obliterate notions of what one human is capable of pulling-off on this simple instrument. Glance around the room wherever he plays and witness wall-to-wall looks of sheer slack-jawed astonishment."

1st and Repair, Montgomery's first album demonstrated his chops on blues, reggae, pop and soul-influenced numbers. His original songs, strong vocals and standout acoustic guitar work attracted attention from fans early on.

He began playing with his musician mother, Maggie Montgomery. She moved to Luckenbach when Monte was a teen, and he said, "That's where my musical training started. Just hanging out in Luckenbach with my mom and jammin' under the trees with different musicians she knew." From that beginning, he worked his way up through "opening act" exposure with Bob Dylan, Buddy Guy, Robert Earl Keen, Delbert McClinton, Kenny Loggins and Willie Nelson.

Although he's touring all around the country, he comes back to Austin regularly and can be caught in spots such as the Saxon Pub and Dessau Hall.

Monte's website is full of more detail about him and an appearance schedule. Look for his music on Amazon, and on CDBaby.

Monte Montgomery Album Review:
Worst Album Work Yet at 2004-03-22
Ive been going to Monte shows and buying his gear and albums for over 15 years...all I can say about this album is DISAPPOINTED!!!!This album is TOTALLY un-Monte...I dont know what the other two reviewers are smoking, but this album blows!I wish I could find something good to say about this effort, but I just cant hear anything inspiring here. Do yourself a favor and buy ANYTHING else he has to offer...youll be glad you did. This effort is just not anything to brag about...he probably had to put out an album to fulfill some contract agreement.Pick yourself back up again Monte and go back to kicking ass...more of this crap, and people will start saying Monte who?

Monte does it again at 2004-09-12
Monte Montgomery comes through again with his 5th studio album. Each new release offers something a little different, but retains enough of his unique musical stylings to create a respectable catalog. On The Story of Love, Monte refrains from most of the guitar pyrotechnics and offers up somewhat of a concept album. The concept being the ups downs and sideways of personal relationships. The vocals come through with passion and conviction, and the guitar playing is as mature as the singing. The experience shows. I recommend this CD, though no single album of his provides the whole picture. You should (and will) buy the others.
Monte Montgomery Album Review:
Different than past projects, but it grew on me quickly at 2004-04-25
This CD was not what I expected from Monte, but, as the songwriter and producer, I think he did a great job with this concept album. The music is interesting and diverse.

Dont believe the naysayers at 2005-04-01
There comes a time in a musicians career when they can choose to focus on thier technique and prowess at their instrument, or they can choose to use the skill they have gained to contribute to songwriting. Monte is on the latter path. This album is absolutely one of his finest, with each and every song being excellently crafted with thoughtful words and melodies. Monte began his career as a guitar prodigy, and there are many out there that wish he would just stick to noodling on the fretboard, producing as many notes as possible in the shortest period of time. While his technique is jaw-droppingly good, Monte has moved on and is now focused on writing songs. So for those looking for guitar acrobatics, this is not the album for you. But if you are interested in fantastically *written* songs with good melodies and excellent words, then I would highly recommend this album.

Waited a long time for this CD . . . at 2005-01-21
. . . but must sadly say Im slightly disappointed in this offering. I guess Ive been spoilt by the totally awesome Mirror CD, that I have constantly played since its release. The follow up Wishing Well was slightly inferior to Mirror, but very good nonetheless. I feel this latest offering is a retrograde step, it doesnt offer (to me anyway) the innovative excitement of the performance that attracted me to Monte in the first place. For newbies interested in stunning guitar work, you MUST get the Mirror CD!!

Monte Montgomery Album Editorial:
The Story of Love is energetic soulful and beautifully put together with a wonderful mix of great songs awesome guitar work powerful arrangements and stunning vocals. This CD offers Montes fans a new dimension of his triple talent as a Singer Songwriter and Guitarist. Monte breaks new ground as he lays bare innermost songwriting in a varied array of tender songs with soulful and heartfelt presentations. For the first time Monte offers an acoustic solo performance on piano displaying one more facet of his seemingly infinite talent. Not only does this CD showcase Montes abilities as a refined Vocalist Songwriter and Musician it also reflects his skills as an Arranger and Producer. The Story Of Love delivers a full array of Montes gifts to his fans with class and finesse. Monte is the current 6-Time Defending Champion as Best Acoustic Guitarist at the Austin Music Awards. Montes new Signature Guitar Line by Alvarez Guitars will be in music stores nationally in January 2004.
Monte Montgomery Album Review:
Amazing!!! at 2003-12-30
Monte Montgomerys music is incredible and the songs on this album prove he is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. The live performances put all other guitar players to shame. Montes solos, vocals, and melodies are killer. The only song that wasnt on here is When Love Comes Knockn which was featured in the awesome movie Pico de Gallo. Otherwise, this is a top notch album and should be purchased by all Monte fans.

THE Best Monte Album at 2004-05-02
This is a great cd! Monte really knows how to put on a live show and the studio albums just cant capture that energy. Monte, on guitar and vocals, and Phil, on drums, are really ON! Sara Smile, the Hall and Oates cover, is my favorite song on the album, but Lie to Me and Took Too Long arent too far behind. This is one of my 2 favorite cds that I own tied with On and On by Jack Johnson.
Monte Montgomery Album Review:
A great live performance at 2004-01-30
This very well-recorded cd is done in the spirit of the MTV unplugged series-- just Monte plus percussion. He manages to show off the fact that he can make a two-piece sound like a four piece. Very pure recording, the guitar sounds great, one of the best live albums Ive ever heard, up there with the Pretenders Isle of View, Clapton Unplugged.
Monte Montgomery Album Review:
God Given Talent at 2006-03-02
Monte Montgomery is in my mind the most talented singer, songwriter, guitarist that I personaly have ever heard. He is the real deal. He gets tons of attention for his guitar playing, but folks, what U need to grasp is his SONGWRITING. It is amazing. This is a great primer Monte album. It is stripped down, and although it is not representive of his rocking live shows, it does give a needed focus to his vocals and stand alone talent as a guitarist. Of course Phil Bass, long time drummer sets in on this as well, and Monte and Phil are a magical pair.
