Karen Tyler Bio

Alone and Blue is a showcase for former Austinite Karen Tyler's songwriting talent. This is acoustic blues, as the album cover proudly proclaims, "Recorded live in the studio. No overdubs. Vocals, guitars and six string banjo." The album inspired Steve Harvell to write in the magazine Big Daddy BluzHarp, "Karen Tyler is, in my opinion, the best female vocalist that I have ever heard in my 46 years of living."

Austin Blues Monthly said, "This lady has a voice...a great voice...sultry and smoky...one of my favorite blues vocalists." Texas Beat Magazine said, "A brilliant blend of gospel and blues, with great writing, great vocals."

Karen Tyler wins praise like that for her sassy blues, her songwriting skills, and a voice that delivers. The Delta Snake Blues News awards in '98 had Karen Tyler in the top five for Best Female Acoustic Artist, Best Acoustic Guitar Player, and Best Acoustic Blues CD.

Karen's album, Lovin' the Blues Too Long, is distributed by Indie Austin Distribution, a subdivision of Local Flavor. Her CDs are sold from Local Flavor, Waterloo, Borders Books and Records and the Texas Music Roundup run by Dave Sanger of Lazy SOB records. You can also find a link to online album sales at Karen Tyler's website.

Her voice is rich and supple enough to bend, wail and caress a song. Her rhythmic acoustic guitar work builds the foundation for ballads, country blues and swinging rock.

Karen moved to California recently, where she is recruiting Austin singers to join her for a California tour. She writes articles for a Swedish magazine and frequently reviews and features Austin artists in its pages. The move to California has agreed with her, because she's landing big concerts and festivals all over the US, getting airplay internationally and has been invited to tour Europe.

Karen Tyler Album Review:
Review of Alone and Blue at 2000-03-07
Karen Tylers latest CD, Alone and Blue, is striking in several ways. Although it is live and acoustic with just vocals and guitar, I never missed the rest of the band! The performances are memorable and the material is very strong. This is acoustic blues! Karens touch on the guitar is a treat for the ear and her sultry vocals bring a wistful smile to my face! The CD is a pleasure to listen to. Its very relaxing music. Listening to Alone and Blue is the next best thing to catching Karens live act.
