Jesse Dayton Album Review:
Insanely Infectious--4 and half stars at 2004-11-08
I heard a Jesse Dayton track on an Americana compilation two years ago. It was pretty good, but didnt prompt me to run out and purchase a CD. My loss. This is how country music is supposed to sound. There are a couple of tracks that explore a Stax/Memphis soul sound, but the heart of this CD is Texas honky tonk, amiable, fresh and effortlessly enjoyable. My only complaint...and its a minor one...this is so polished, Id prefer a few rough edges here and there.

Jesse Dayton Album Editorial:
Hang on! After the title track storms out of the chute like a bucking bronco Jesse Dayton takes listeners on a wild ride across roadhouse country. He swaggers his way through Tall Walkin Texas Trash as if channeling the cocksure spirit of Waylon Jennings (with whom Dayton recorded as a guitarist) and conjures the border cantina atmospherics of Doug Sahm on the accordion-laced All Because of You and Moravia. The album takes a detour with a revival of the Cars Just What I Needed rearranged for fiddle and steel guitar. Best of all is the down-home soul of Aint Grace Amazing. Riley Osbourns keyboards and Carolyn Wonderlands backing vocals add a bluesy strain while the horn charts on It Wont Always Be Like This and Just to Get You Off My Mind sound more Memphis than Nashville. With some down-and-dirty guitar powering Talkin Bobby Dales Hard Luck Blues the album never loses its reckless energy nor compromises its ndependent spirit. Don McLeese

Jesse Dayton Album Review:
Sweetest Voice on the planet at 2001-12-10
If you havent heard Jesse Dayton sing, youre missing out. And if you like to dance in a circle rather than in a straight line, get this cd. While this album was recorded in Nashville, its real Texas country. Jesses been around for a while, but since hes maintained his integrity and written nearly every one of his own songs, he hasnt managed to get his big break. Yet, everyone who has heard him, knows hes better than everybody else out there on mainstream radio. His vocals have quite a big range, as do his influences. He injects a little bit of everything into his writing including blues, zydeco, dixie, tejano, rock, and especially traditional country. Hes neither afraid to have fun or be serious, and youll appreciate his respect for his audience. Do yourself a favor and buy this album, then treat yourself to Raisin Cain (his first) and Tall Texas Tales (the most intelligent of all three). Backed by his regular bandmates Charlie Sanders, Richie Vasquez and Brian Thomas, and featuring legendary artists like Flaco Jimenez and Johnny Gimble this is a cant miss album. My car stereo just wouldnt be the same without it.

Jesse Dayton Album Editorial:
Jesse Dayton was born in Beaumont Texas--George Jones country--cut his musical teeth in Austin moved to Los Angeles to write for film and TV and recorded this album in Nashville. Therefore it makes sense that his brand of traditional country music is as rich and diverse as it is. Dayton mixes in heartland rock Tex-Mex rockabilly swing country-folk and a keen pop sensibility with his Texas-style honky-tonk shuffles and ballads. Guests ranging from singers Mandy Barnett and the Dixie Chicks to stalwart sidemen Johnny Gimble Floyd Domino and Flaco Jiminez add color to the proceedings along the way. Daytons a supple guitarist with strong rockabilly roots and one wishes he gave his guitar work a bit more room to stretch out here but its a minor drawback to an otherwise engaging album. Jesse Dayton Album Review:
True Texas Country at 2001-02-08
These days, it seems a rarity that my favorite Austin-sound artists can maintain their edge. Reckless Kelly has completely changed their style, while the Hollisters have lost their best band members (both have lost my interest). Fortunately, Jesse Dayton seems to improve over time. While Raising Cain had been on my revolving CD playlist for the last four or so years, it has recently been displaced by his newest Tall Texas Tales. Jesses music is aptly described as edgy, progressive country. The songs characters and stories always keep you emotionally involved, and are supported by Jesses soulful voice. Catch Jesse in concert if you can. He puts on a great show!!
