Jeff Talmadge Bio

Jeff Talmadge's Blissville (2006) was released in Europe before it was released in the U.S. He's recording for a European label now, CoraZong. A few of the songs on the album were released previously by Talmadge, but they were remastered and reworked for Blissville. The album is another success for Talmadge, winning him Americana, roots, and songwriter awards and landing high in the Americana charts. His beautiful guitar work and fine lyrics continue to be his trademark qualities.

Gravity, Grace and the Moon (2003) is Jeff Talmadge at his best. A true poet, the fact that Talmadge expresses that poetry in music simply enhances the fine art of the storyteller that he has mastered. Try these lines from ?All the Things She'll Miss? as proof:

?The light is shining throught her dress like late September And it's a night in early spring And there are some things that are best left unremembered There's a full moon and the strap of a dress off her shoulder A kiss from the tips of her toes A hand in the small of her back where he holds her . . .?

Featured with Talmadge on Gravity, Grace and the Moon are Glenn Fukunaga, Paul Pearcy, Randy McCullough, Bradley Kopp, Karen Mal, Peter Keane, Chip Dolan, Richard Bowden, Mike Hardwick, and Rich Brock.

Todd GeGroff, writing in Victory Music Review, said ?You don't listen to Talmadge's originial songs as much as slip into his world of sweet regrets, wry memories and poetic insights.?

Bad Tattoo, released in 2001, is further testament to the quality of Jeff Talmadge's music. With the likes of Bukka Allen on accordian and Gene Elders on violin in the studio with him recording Bad Tattoo, Talmadge created his third solo album in three years, Jeff Talmadge isn't wasting a minute getting his new career off to a good start. Along with Hank Card of the Austin Lounge Lizards and John Blinn, Talmadge is one of a group of lawyer/musicians who seem to find a home for both music and the law in Austin. He was born in Uvalde, went to college at Duke, and has won prizes for his poetry and writing. He plays Austin spots such as Flipnotics, Saxon Pub and Waterloo Ice House.

The Spinning of the World, released in 2000 is full of his terrific self-penned songs, his gentle harmonies, and his dry wit. Talmadge uses a smooth combination of speaking and singing to deliver his sometimes droll lyrics. Todd De Groff, writing in Victory Music Review, said, "You don't listen to Talmadge's original songs as much as slip into his world of sweet regrets, wry memories and poetic insights."

Gajoob Reviews wrote about his first album, Secret Anniversaries, "I love everything about this album. Talmadge's lyrics are filled with images of real life and sung with a half spoken / half sung voice of experience and long friendship, telling stories of people worn by life's winds. The album title comes from a poem by Longfellow: "The holiest of all holidays are those kept by ourselves in silence and apart; the secret anniversaries of the heart...." The music is filled with plucked acoustic guitars, sweeping cello and lonesome violins and flutes. This is a very special album." There were a lot of radio stations that agreed with Gajoob's assessment: it garnered air time on over 50 stations around the world.

His web site is filled with interesting information and reviews.

Jeff Talmadge Album Editorial:
The new release from Austin singer/songwriter Jeff Talmadge.
Jeff Talmadge Album Review:
Lush, well arranged ,beautifully produced serious music !! at 1999-05-13
All in all Jeffs a serious songwriter with a serious attitude towards album production. Cellos ! Violins ! Flutes ! Upright bass !The musician credits sound almost like an orchestra ensemble. However they seem to blend in well with Jeffs songs,in this self produced collection of mostly slow to mid tempo bitter-sweet ballads. Some beautiful guitar work by Mr.Talmadge and Brian Wood as well as the rest of the guitarists. Damned good stuff!
Jeff Talmadge Album Review:
A stellar addition to the Talmadge line of musicology at 1999-10-22
An earlier album, Hired Hands, showed amazing promise for Jeff Talmadge. He now seems to upgraded the picking and songwriting and this album is a must!
Jeff Talmadge Album Review:
No Hype; Just Bozart at 1999-10-15
Jeff Talmadges latest release on indie Bozart is a crisp autumn walk across the laid-bare soul of a Texas boy whose hard-earned insights into the joys and sorrows of life shared between women and men were earned on the long, hard blacktop of experience. It has the flavor of early Lyle Lovett without the misogynous edge.Talmadges literate lyrics, the hallmark of his songwriting craftsmanship, slip, slide and slither through carefully textured melodies touched by a brilliant cast of Austins most talented musicians: Beth Galiger, Larry Seyer, Brian Wood, Glen Fukanaga, Chris Searles, Freddie Krc, Spencer Starnes and Gene Elders. Elders sizzling violin, Galigers tasty flute and vocals, and the cello mysteries of Peter Kempter and Frank Kammerdiener highlight spare arrangements that compliment Talmadges honest, gritty vocals. The songwriting collaboration between Talmadge and Texas expatriate David Rodriguez, Midnight Flight, comes to life with Larry Seyers clever guitar work.Wink Tylers Austin Recording Studios have given birth to notable gems in the past by such luminaries as Marcia Ball, Huey Lewis, Nancy Griffith, Guy Clark, Asleep at the Wheel, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Willie Nelson. Secret Anniversaries will earn Talmadge a choice position on Winks Wall of Fame.
