Hella Album Reviews
for the geek in all of us
if you were in band, are impressed by polyrhythms, or want to listen to a nice session of music theory, we proudly present Hella. just so you know, hella is hella crazy. Spencer Seim and Zach Hill are either robots or virtuosos or freaks with too much time on their hand. Spencer sounds like 3 guitar players all going at it at once, and Zach, although drumset small, does some nice little percussion diddys. this may or may not be your cup of tea, it does get a wee bit old after a while. amazingly though, this album held my interest from start to finish. there are enough hooks between the masturbation to keep you enthralled. hella worth buying if youre hella into it.
Good album, no doubt.
Super-fast, sped up. Another one on the ever-growing list of amazingly proficient two-piece bands. This guy can definitely drum. This guy can riff with the best of em. I cant argue with talent. The songs are good, too. Each song is unique, and obviously with a great attention to detail. Its a bit on the short side, but Hella get their point across. I hear they put on a great live show, too. What else is there to say? Pick this one up if you like quick decisions with precision-rock.

I think I still have to listen to this album a few more times to put it away for good, but theres one thing, the drummer is not as good as everyone says. He misses the beat a lot of times and besides he keeps trying to show just how good he is and how fast he can do his breaks, sorry!
musical noodeling on 11
Spencer Seim and Zach Hill are on a mission...Make noise with structure is their credo and they actually get away with it. The musicianship on this, their 1st CD, is beyond-beyond the pale of what can be done with an electric guitar and drums...If youre a Hella fan...check out their side projects. Spencer Seims The Advantage is a kick. Spencer has arranged all of your favorite Nentendo 16 bit tunes on an album...Castlevainia being my favorite.Zach Hill can be heard on Team Sleep (Deftones off-shoot) and Crime and Choir Albums.Just-a-note--Before there was Hella there was the band Legs on Earth. They recorded one album Lasers and Saviors (para-sight.com) which Melody Maker called legendary...Rumor has it that it may be available on Amazon soon...I have a copy and it lives up to its reputation.
holy hell.
im not a fan of the name of this band o_0but..heres the thing:intensely technical drumming can be put into an album in bad ways, and in good ways. this is good.drummer zach hill possibly not a human? manages to pull off mind blowing structures in the midst of a chaotic, yet very well put together album. the duo do a hot job of balancing eachother out. it makes me want to run around in circles.very stimulating. something tasty and new with each listen.
