Something for the Trail

Gary P. Nunn Album Review:
Good-Time Texas Dance Music at 2004-06-24 Gary P Nunn has always been more dynamic and more of a presence on stage than on record. His live shows are really something to enjoy. But his records, while decent, have never had enough substance and mass appeal in the world of country music to launch his career beyond that of a regional phenomenon. It was 30 years ago, when Jerry Jeff Walker covered Nunns London Homesick Blues, that he first attracted serious attention. Since then, Nunn has been able to capitalize on the name recognition that song gave him and build a career he might not otherwise have. That career has been steady, if unspectacular but Nunn has carved his niche. For the newcomer to Nunns music, it may best be described as good-time Texas dance music.Something For the Trail is yet another one of a string of Nunn recordings that are best enjoyed at an outdoor dance and barbecue. There is plenty of Texas imagery and 14 tunes tailor-made for boot scootin or buckle-rubbin. My favorites here are Perfectly Normal, Waltz With the Devil, Going Nowhere Fast and One Night Stand. Musicians in Nunns band include the famous fiddler Johnny Gimble and Gary Primich, a regionally well-known harmonica player.I named a few songs I like, but there is nothing on Something For the Trail that is unforgettable. I give the CD three stars not because there is anything wrong with the music but because Nunn does not use much of his own material and much of what he does use is formulaic. Despite that, I would recommend it ahead of scores of more popular country music CDs because what Nunn lacks in originality he makes up for in his delivery. If youre a fan of Texas-style western music, check this one out.

Except for one incident I had with security, it was a PERFECT evening!Ive got all his CDs; and this is as good as GUACOMOLE and ROAD TRIP, maybe even better (and the recording quality is A1A!)
