Fastball Bio:

Keep Your Wig OnIt has been a four year wait for Fastball to step up with a new album. Following the incendiary success of their breakthrough album, All the Pain Money Can Buy, a new album has to be a challenge for this rock group. But, by all accounts, Keep Your Wig On (2004) was worth the wait. Band co-leaders Miles Zuniga and Tony Scalzo deliver stunning songwriting, Beatles-esque charms, and buoyant garage rock with Keep Your Wig On.

album coverIn September, 2000, Fastball's album Harsh Light of Day was released. Weeks before its expected released date of Sept. 19 a media buzz was building as fans eagerly await the album.

Tony Scalzo, Miles Zuniga and Joey Shuffield made their mark on Austin as Magneto. The next thing anybody knew they were Fastball, a hit on MTV and going platinum. "The Way," a song written by Scalzo, was Fastball's entry into the fast paced world of stardom. The album was All the Pain Money Can Buy.

Fastball album coverThe last Austin act to go platinum (a million sold) with a new release was the Fabulous Thunderbirds in 1988, and before that Christopher Cross in 1981.

Followers of the Austin music scene know that Zuniga, Scalzo, and Shuffield each have more than 15 years invested in rock & roll. As Magneto and later Magneto USA, the trio played local live music venues like Flamingo Cantina, Electric Lounge, and the Hole in the Wall before signing with Hollywood Records

Early in 1998, after hearing Fastball at SXSW, a Newstimes.com reviewer said, "Here's my contribution to the Next Big Band sweepstakes: Fastball is going to be huge. 'The Way' has already conquered modern-rock radio with its irresistible pop hooks, and during an acoustic in-store at Waterloo the band proved it has many more and different-sounding hit singles where that came from."

Their 1996 debut album, Make Your Mama Proud. won best pop band category at the 1995/6 Austin Music Awards.

"Melody is important to me, and it's what I look for in most styles of music," says Scalzo, who's been playing music since he took up classical piano as a kid. "I look for it first -- even in jazz or crazy stuff like Sun Ra or Sonic Youth. In the midst of all this cacophony, there's this melody that just jumps out and grabs you."

Impressionmag reviewed them by saying, "Fastball is a unique band in that Scalzo sings catchy power-pop, radio-friendly songs that sound better on CD, but Zuniga is better live." The trio are all comfortable in the role of sideman or lead, sharing the songwriting chores and staying on the same musical wavelength.

Keep Your Wig On

Fastball Album Review:
Love it! at 2005-07-30
I have been a Fastball fan from the beginning and I was anxiously awaiting more from them. When I first listened I was a bit disappointed - there were none of the harder rock tracks like Sooner or Later, This is Not My Life, She Comes Round, and Time which are my favorites from Fastball. Keep Your Wig On definately has more of a pop style with songs more similar to their previous radio hits. But after listening one or two times I found myself unable to get the songs out of my head (no pun intended)! The best tracks are Drifting Away, Airstream, I get High, Til I get it Right, Falling Upstairs, and Our Misunderstanding. If you are a Fastball fan you will love Keep Your Wig On - but give it a chance - you may need to listen to it a few times before you love it!

Fastball Album Review:
Surprisingly Good at 2005-06-17
Ive known Fastball since 98. Like most people The Way was my introduction to the band. Unlike many other one or two hit wonders, Fastball stuck in my head in the following years. I didnt buy any of their CDs until a couple years ago when I had to learn Out of My Head for a show. ATPMCB was an awesome album and hooked me into the Fastball bandwagon. For this CD, which Im surprised they came back together to make, I have to say I didnt really like it at first. Like someone else said, it doesnt have any obvious singles. But, after living with it for awhile, it really grew on me. Its very easy to listen to and the songs are easy to remember. The best song by far is I Get High. Despite its obvious unoriginality in format, its simply a great tune and possibly my favorite Fastball song. So, all in all, dont expect to hear any tracks from this on the radio... but its a cool CD and confirms that Fastball still kicks.

Fastball Album Review:
Great band at 2006-02-26
The songs Louie-Louie , Get High, and Airstream went straight to my new iPod. This is almost as good as Harsh Light Of Day. They have a mainstream sound. My brother made me a classic-rock gooru, but my buds in school have gotten me into this band. Hope to see them some time. Not as good as Badfinger or the Raspberries, but one of the best around today.

Great Cd From A Great Group at 2006-01-29
My brother introduced me to these guys and i havent stopped listening to them since.I thought they had split up after their best of collection. Then to my delight i saw they had released a new one in 2004.Where have i been huh? This a very solid disc indeed and a very plesant listen.Highlights include Drifting Away,Got High,Perfect World, and Red Light. The only song i found less than desirable was Falling Upstairs.

Fastball is back. at 2005-08-20
This really is a superb quality album. Before this one, I had All the Pain Money Can Buy and The Harsh Light of Day. My best friends dad is the manager of Fastball, so I was introduced when I was younger to this band.Keep Your Wig On only gets better than Fastballs previous albums. Not one song on the album is bad by any means and they really have honed their skill of writing wonderful pop rock ballads, accompanied by Miles and Tonys silky smooth voices.Every song is well written and the lyrics are great. Do yourself a favor and buy this album!

Fastball Album Editorial:
Platinum recording artists Fastball return with their Rykodisc debut Keep Your Wig On their loosest and strongest collection yet. Recorded at Viewpoint Studios in Austin the bulk of the album was produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon) with production contributions from Sheryl Crow songwriter Jeff Trott (Our Misunderstanding) and Fountains of Waynes Adam Schlesinger (Someday Red Light). The album was mixed by the legendary Bob Clearmountain.

Fastball Album Review:
This is justwhat you want: pure classics at 2003-01-05
It seems that fastball has had quite a career. They have had three albums, all with remembering tunes. There song have been featured on soundtracks, The NOW cds and they even had the biggest hit of the 1999 summer The Way But not many people want all the songs. They want songs that they remember, people wonder what fastball was like at there best. This album sums it up. It truly shows fastball at there best. It has all the hits that were on the radio... If you want to hear songs by fastball but dont want some of their other non hit songs flooding your album, this would be the album for you. Plus it has an enhanced CD for more fun. Buy it!

Fastball Album Review:
Good pop songs are underrated at 2005-05-09
I seldom write music reviews for Amazon but this album has had me humming all day. I cant say enough about how the well-crafted pop songs are catchy and intelligent. This album ranks up there with Squeezes Singles - 45s and Under and Gin Blossoms New Miserable Experience in terms of almost every song being solid. Will definitely get played over and over in my house.

Fastball Album Review:
four stars because of confusion at 2004-06-22
Why does Fastball have a compelation CD? They had only had three previous albums before this, and in my opinion that is too soon for a compelation album. Fastball is still a young band with, hopefully, more albums to come. They are a great band and I love their music. I would give this CD five stars for the material, but I take away a star simply because they havent had enough albums for a compelation.

Fastball Album Review:
Couldnt have been better... at 2004-06-21
When I first found out that this compilation existed, it caught me off guard. Fastball had only released 3 studio albums prior to this collection and in my mind it was too soon for this album to exist (note that the record company and Fastball had already parted ways when this record was released so its safe to say that this was released for economic issues only). When I read the tracklisting the obvious song titles were present, with one unreleased song (Black Rain) and one B-side (Emotional) added to the mix. Owning all of this material on the original studio albums, I passed on this collection but I can still vouche for this release since Im familiar with all of the songs and its worth any price you pay for it. Fastball is truly an underrated band that if you care to listen to this disc you too will appreciate this Austin, TX group just like all of the fans theyve picked up over the years. Highlights are (all of the songs are highlights, I mean this a Best Of package!) Are You Ready For The Fallout?, Slow Drag, Sooner Or Later, The Way, Out Of My Head and Fire Escape. PLEASE BUY THIS RECORD!
