Elias Haslanger Bio

Jazz saxman Elias Haslanger creates some of the most memorable jazz Austin has witnessed. His 2006 release is Dream Story. Dream Story is all original?a result of 8 years of writing and reflects Haslanger's time in NYC and in Austin. The CD features JJ Johnson, Pete Rodriguiz, Andy Langham, Hamilton Price, and Randy Zimmerman

As part of the Lucky Strikes, in bands jamming at the Elephant Room at a Women in Jazz Concert, or at a jazz festival, Elias Haslanger's impeccible sax work is always outstanding. Kicks are for Kids is his 1998 album. It inspires comments such as this one from Michael Point of Drumbeat Magazine, "Haslanger is now a full grown talent, both as a composer and instrumentalist whose future has almost unlimited potential and should be regarded in national terms."

Kicks are for Kids features Ellis Marsalis on piano, Fred Sanders on piano, JJ Johnson on drums, and Edwin Livingston on bass.

Reviewers of his albums frequently bring up the name of John Coltrane and the bop tradition when describing Haslanger's tenor saxaphone talents.

His second album, For the Moment, is fresh and rich and shows off his improvisational skills. Fred Sanders, JJ Johnson, and Edwin Livingston completed the band on this album. This album came out in 1995 and took Haslanger onto the national charts.

Standards was Elias Haslanger's 1994 debut as a soloist. This great album was recorded in five hours, with only one take per song. The CD features James Polk, Jeff Haley, and Steve Schwelling.

Elias Haslanger Album Review:
Haslanger is reaching for his own sound... at 1999-02-03
The leaders tenor moves through many different emotions, reminding me a bit of John Coltrane...Haslangers compositions have strong frameworks - even a blowing track like Two Tone has a good chordal sense, giving the soloists a smart springboard for theis excursions. Ellis Marsalis takes the chair on Eugene and Marie. His relaxed playing on the track brings out the Paul Desmond in Haslanger, with melody lines that curl around the loping bass lines and swishing cymbals. Papa Marsalis is a two-fisted pianist, building his solo around a cluster of bluesy chords. His appearance on Duke Ellingtons Just Squeeze Me is marked by more easy piano - nothing is rushed, his chordal work is intelligent and his solo is a classy blend of dancing single-note runs and ringing chords. Here, Haslanger comes on like Ben Webster, with breathy tones. There is plenty to like on Kicks are for Kids: the interplay, the stong solos, the melodies, and more. Elias Haslanger is reaching for his own sound, building upon classic Jazz players, but not abandoning the blues sensibility. As his composing skills continue to mature, I know that well be hearing great music from this young Texan. In the meantime, I recommend this disc. - Richard B. Kamins, Cadence Magazine

Coltrane-tinged harmonics surge and soar at 2002-10-07
Tenor saxophonist Elias Haslanger is the real deal, a no-nonsense modernist whose Rollins-esque rhythmatics and Coltrane-tinged harmonics surge and soar. The young titan flies with a spiky quartet whose savvy hipness recalls the best groups of Davis, Blakey and Silver...a highly appealing date with plenty of bloodand thunder and seriously swinging fun --Chuck Berg, JazzTimes Magazine

Texas Tenor Anew at 2000-04-21
I admit to a slight bias. Ive known Elias Haslanger since he was in his teens, and Ive played music with him on many occasions. Nonetheless I can assure anyone reading this that Elias is an amazing musician with a distinctive voice, and Kicks Are For Kids is his best album to date. If you like jazz that is rooted in the past but is undeniably contemporary and fresh, youll like what Eli has to say.

One of the best Tenor Players out there. at 1999-07-08
Elias does it again with his new CD. Having Lived in the Austin Area for a few months I heard this band many times live and every time was better than the last. Elias is well-schooled in the history of Jazz and the Saxophone which puts him years ahead of a lot of other young artists out there. I suggest that you listen to this album. You will enjoy it from beginning to end. Steve Guerra
Elias Haslanger Album Review:
Outstanding!! burting with energy! at 2002-10-30
Outstanding!! He can purr and he can growl...bursting with energy...pretty broad player. Haslanger is clearly in the forefront of the young new, fresh players. He has respect for tradition as well as being himself. He is a merger of the past and the future. --Herb Wong, JazzTimes writer
Elias Haslanger Album Review:
Impressive and deft at 2003-10-02
So many musicians do not seem to love music. Listening to this album, it is clear that Elias loves music, and this transforms his work.

Remember when you thought you were really cool cause you listened to Brubeck and thought Timeout explained hip. Then, I dont know, kids, bills, Heavy Metal. Well, hipster, welcome back. Man, this album is a smoky, dim, club at 2:30 a.m. and last call. Haslangers four player combo (sax, piano, bass, drums) lays down eleven tracks of timeless cool. The album notes explain that it was cut in the studio in 5 hours, featuring numbers written by jazz greats like Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. Bam, nailed on tape and recorded. Road rage? Slip this into your car player and go with the flow.
