Brenda Freed Bio

Brenda Freed started out her career as a music therapist, using songs to help others. She recorded her first album in 1998 and her recording career has blossomed into a major pursuit. Her music is described as folksy, jazzy, and bluesy. She is considered a "generous performer" who tells "stories-with-wit" that are sung with a clear, soulful voice.

Smilin' Inside, released in 2002, earned the following comments from Austin singer Sara Hickman, "Brenda Freed possesses the jazz agility of Diane Schuur married with a hint of pop/folk, ala Kerrville's Folk Festival. An enjoyable listen for a lazy afternoon or romantic evening."

Each of Brenda's earlier CD's, Until Daylight and Sort It Out featured an a cappella song on the last track. "Don't Let the Sun Go Down" from Smilin' Inside was orchestrated with a cappella women's voices, and was the "breakthough" a cappella event that lead to the formation of the completely a cappella group, Hot Flash.

Brenda teamed with Amy Cartee and Karen Peters to form Hot Flash, performing a cappella tunes at live performances. Hot Flash has taken on a life of its own.

Sort it Out, from 1999, paints pictures of the faces of love from every angle.

Until Daylight, from 1998, was the debut album of Brenda Freed's original music featuring strong heartfelt vocals and guitar work tastefully presented in a folk or folk/rock manner.

Brenda Freed Album Review:
Like poise and passion? Musicianship?? Then get this now. at 2001-10-09
This is the kind of authentic music that can so easily be lost amidst the desperate excitement of 30-somethings striving to retain their wishfully misspent youth as they trawl through dump-bins of rereleases. Brenda Freed is above all that. She disdains anything showy, anything dishonest, in favour of the emotion at the heart of her songs which is conveyed with a deeply touching directness: listen to In the Nest of Our Hearts if you want to be convinced. Not that all the songs are that intense; there are also wit and humour here, an occasional whimsy that might remind you of Dan Hicks. There might be many other echoes here, as Freed displays an eclectic array of influences: you can hear jazz, folk, blues, torch song, hints of experimental keyboards; but here, as with the best music, those kinds of definitions are sterile and pedantic. What is really here is an exceptional voice that is lazy yet assured, cool yet sexy - my mind is dirty but my hands are clean as she teasingly sings - playful yet involved. Shes matched with a set of musicians who are so tight yet unobtrusive: there is no self-consciously idle virtuosity here; just a shared love of song, of music. Give yourself a break and have a treat: forget the rereleases, dim the lights, settle down with a glass of good wine, and give a serious listen to a wholly enjoyable and impressive cd.
Brenda Freed Album Review:
Brenda Freed band sorts it out at 2000-03-07
Brendas second CD demonstrates her musical and songwriting range. Brenda and her electric band take the listener through many of loves experiences from the rockin title track, Sort It Out, to the a capella Center of the Road. Brendas voice combined with Vals masterful guitar, Tims bass and Merls tasty percussion deliver an exciting production of these original songs. Their tight, spontaneous style is a pleasure to listen to in any mood.
