The group was all men until 1997, when a woman joined the them. Ester Littlefield, a tenor, became ill and a replacement was needed. It was hard to find a suitable tenor voice, so a woman joined the ranks. She is Lena Thomas, who also plays guitar. The other members of the Bells of Joy currently singing are J. T. Stewart, Al Brown, Alton Cyphers, Willis Ira Littlefield, along with Lena Thomas, A.C. Littlefield and A. D. Watson. In the 1960s, a second album, Singing the Gospel, was made on a Nashville label. Dial Tone Records is putting out a new Bells of Joy album in 1999. We hope to have information about it and sound clips for you here on MusicAustin.
