Bells of Joy Bio

Let's Talk about Jesus, the first album by the Bells of Joy came out in 1951. It sold over a million copies. The Bells of Joy have continued singing through all these years. Some of the original members of the group became preachers. Some went on to other things. In 1999 the group issued a new album, Second Time Around.

The group was all men until 1997, when a woman joined the them. Ester Littlefield, a tenor, became ill and a replacement was needed. It was hard to find a suitable tenor voice, so a woman joined the ranks. She is Lena Thomas, who also plays guitar.

The other members of the Bells of Joy currently singing are J. T. Stewart, Al Brown, Alton Cyphers, Willis Ira Littlefield, along with Lena Thomas, A.C. Littlefield and A. D. Watson.

In the 1960s, a second album, Singing the Gospel, was made on a Nashville label. Dial Tone Records is putting out a new Bells of Joy album in 1999. We hope to have information about it and sound clips for you here on MusicAustin.

Church auditoriums, luncheons, and meetings are the places where the singing of gospel by the Bells of Joy can be heard in Austin.
