A new blues scene grew in its place around Antone's House of Blues and Antone's Records. Angela created an Austin legacy, even as she continued growing and expanding, as her 1998 Deja Blue demonstrates.

In an Austin Chronicle interview, W.C. Clark told it this way: "I thought the blues scene in Austin was dying out, but it was slowly coming back then," says Clark. "Jimmie, Bill Campbell, Angela Strehli, Denny Freeman, Paul Ray. The Eastside was dying out. This was a time when all of a sudden the blacks started moving up, getting better jobs, better homes, two cars in the driveway. ... When I first met Angela, she was singing with James Polk & the Brothers. She was the only white singer. John Reed was playing guitar. I had never seen a band like that - a mixed band. I wanted to be involved with that, so I worked with James Polk for a while, then we decided to form our own group - me and Angela, Denny Freeman, and Derek O'Brien. That's when we formed Southern Feeling." Texas Monthly called Angela Strehli "the most important female vocalist to come out of Texas since Janis Joplin." It was the formation of the Angela Strehli Band in 1982 which allowed Strehli's emergance as a top performer. Staffed by two of the city's musical icons, guitarist Denny Freeman and drummer George Rains, the Strehli ensemble captured numerous honors in the annual Austin Music Awards. Strehli earned the award for the Best Female Vocalist seven times. She went on to share a stage at Carnegie Hall in 1985 with Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughan and Dr. John. Also in 1986 she, along with Clifford Antone, founded the Antone's Record Label. Antone's released her debut, Soul Shake, in 1987. Strehli helped forge the sound and style of Antone's Records. In 1990, she helped produce Dreams Come True, a collaboration between herself, Lou Ann Barton, and Marcia Ball, and winner of the NAIRD award for Best Blues Album. Rolling Stone said of Dreams Come True, it "took five years to make. As testimony to its spontaneous vitality, the album sounds as if it had been cut in a day. These three women - the first ladies of the Austin, Texas, rhythm blues scene- are not coy or cool. They attack this collection of venerable R&B tunes and originals full bore, throats wide open and wailing." The spotlight has shifted back to the Eastside somewhat with the reopening of the Victory Grill and the Austin Blues Family Tree Project by Diverse Arts, but Angela Strehli has a firm hold on her status as a legendary figure in Austin music. |

Angela Strehli Album Review:
This chick understands the Blues! at 2001-04-14 Angela Strehli has style and conviction--she reminds me of a Blues version of Anita ODay. I bought this CD based on hearing Two Bit Texas Town (Angelas homage to first hearing the blues on late night radio when she was a teenager), and I soon discovered that the ENTIRE CD is INSPIRED and DELIVERS. Its not derivative; its her own interpretation--and shes an original. Ive never seen Angela Strehli live, but if I do, I hope she ends the set with GOTTA FIND ME A LOVER. This is a tune calculated to bring down the house. The bass and drums are some kind of driving force! In a nutshell, check out this CD. You will discover a real hidden talent in Angela Strehli. Angela Strehli Album Review: Best of Strehli at 2004-03-26 This is the cream of the crop of Angela Strehlis albums. Every songs a winner. If you like her, youll love this album. Angela Strehli Album Review: Angela never lets me down! at 2003-05-15 I have had the pleasure of seeing Angela perform many times in the Austin venue-her constant presence here has been missed since she relocated-but still, she visits and we have her cds...Any Angela Strehli cd that ever comes along will wind up in my collection. Her soulful and sultry voice has a way of wrapping a blues tune around your soul and, somehow, she buries the essence of blues into your being. If this cd isnt in your collection, then your blues collection is incomplete. And when you realize how wonderful she is to listen to, then remember this-the power and magnificence of her voice cannot be transcribed onto a disc-find where she is performing and go there. Then, you will know the magic of Angela Strehli. Angela Strehli Album Editorial: Angela Strehli is one of those most responsible for making Austin a roots music mecca in the 70s and 80s (she was a force behind both Antones the club and the label). Though shes been a San Francisco Bay Area resident for the last few years iBlonde Blue finds her back in Austin working with a faithful cast of Lone Star regulars. Actually remakes of soul staples Never Like This Before and Um Um Um Um Um Um were cut with different lineups; the latter which features soul singer Don Covey and guitarist Steve Cropper is a highlight. Not too surprisingly Strehli proves again that shes a surefooted and sympathetic interpreter of classic blues and soul plus she tosses in four originals. Stellar. Steve Stolder |
